Asia Honeymoons
Ryokan baths, pool villas and Himalayan valleys, sorted by the kind of trip you two want
Asia is less one destination than four. East Asia means Japan, South Korea and Taiwan: spotless trains, hot springs and some of the best food anywhere, a single nonstop flight from many US cities. Southeast Asia means islands and pool villas in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, with temples and street food between beach days. South Asia brings the palaces and tigers of India, the tea hills of Sri Lanka and the Himalayan calm of Nepal and Bhutan. Central Asia, led by Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, is the Silk Road and mountain lakes few honeymooners have reached yet.
The good news is that most of this is easy for Americans. Twelve countries here sit at the State Department's lowest level. A few others are under Do Not Travel advisories and are not covered on our site. Prices outside the luxury resorts are often a fraction of what you pay at home.
The harder part is weather. Monsoons hit different coasts in different months, so the right island in January can be the wrong one in July. Start with your travel month, then pick the country.
Asia covers 27 countries and territories on Honeymoon Huts, with 156 destination guides and 73 hand-picked stays. The months when the most places here hit their best weather are April, March and February.

Sorting Asia by Trip Style
- Culture and comfort: Japan is the polished pick, with Kyoto, Tokyo and an onsen night in Hakone. South Korea pairs Seoul with Jeju Island. Taiwan pairs Taipei with Sun Moon Lake.
- Beach and villa: Thailand and Bali in Indonesia have the deepest bench of honeymoon resorts. The Philippines wins for limestone lagoons and island hopping.
- Culture plus beach on a budget: Vietnam, Cambodia and Sri Lanka let you mix old towns, temples and coast for far less than the big resort islands.
- Spirit and mountains: Bhutan and Nepal, for fortress monasteries, prayer flags and Himalayan dawns.
- Palaces and tigers: India, from the lake palaces of Udaipur to tiger drives in Ranthambore and a houseboat on the Kerala Backwaters.
- Road less traveled: Uzbekistan's Silk Road cities, the lakes of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan or a ger camp in Mongolia's Gobi Desert.
Monsoons, Blossoms and the Right Month
In Thailand, the Andaman coast around Phuket and Krabi & Railay is best from November to April. Koh Samui on the Gulf side is driest from January to April and often pleasant in June, July and August, when the Andaman side is wet. Sri Lanka works the same way: Galle and Mirissa shine from December to April, while Trincomalee on the east coast is best from about May to September. Malaysia splits too, with Langkawi best in winter and the Perhentian Islands in summer.
Bali's dry season runs roughly April to October, with May, June and September the sweet spot. The Philippines is driest from about January to May.
Japan has two famous peaks: cherry blossoms in late March and early April and maples from mid-November into December. Winter is quiet and clear. India's Rajasthan and Kerala are best from about October to March, as are Nepal and Bhutan in spring and fall. Central Asia is a spring, summer or early fall trip.
Islands, Reefs and Pool Villas
Thailand offers the widest choice. Phuket is the easy, varied base. Krabi & Railay has limestone cliffs and boat-only beaches, Koh Samui does polished villas and Koh Lanta and Khao Sok National Park add quiet and jungle.
In Indonesia, Uluwatu sits on Bali's cliffs, Seminyak is for beach clubs and sunsets and Sumba is wild and remote. The Gili Islands are car-free, while Raja Ampat and Komodo & Labuan Bajo are for divers and boat trips.
The Philippines leads for scenery from the water. El Nido and Coron have lagoons framed by karst, Boracay has the famous white beach, Siargao has surf and Bohol and Siquijor are slower.
Elsewhere, Phu Quoc and Con Dao in Vietnam, Langkawi in Malaysia, the Andaman Islands in India, Mirissa in Sri Lanka and Koh Rong in Cambodia are worth a look. Okinawa gives Japan trips a subtropical finish.
Temples, Ryokan and Old Towns
Kyoto is the most romantic city in the region for many couples: dawn temple walks, a tea ceremony and a kaiseki dinner in a riverside ryokan. Pair it with Tokyo, Kanazawa or the shrine island of Miyajima. Seoul and Gyeongju offer palaces and hanok guesthouses. Taipei has night markets with misty tea mountains close by at Alishan.
Southeast Asia's old towns move slower. Hoi An glows with lanterns, Luang Prabang starts each day with saffron-robed monks and Siem Reap puts the towers of Angkor outside your door at sunrise. Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai & the Golden Triangle bring temples and cooler hills. Ubud keeps Bali's rice terraces and spa culture in one place.
In India, Udaipur, Jaipur and Agra form the classic palace circuit. On the Silk Road, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva in Uzbekistan offer turquoise domes, desert fortresses and good-value guesthouses in historic buildings.
Mountains, Jungle and Wildlife
For couples who want to hike, Paro and Punakha in Bhutan combine valley walks with cliffside monasteries. Pokhara and the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal give you pink Himalayan dawns. Chitwan adds rhino tracks from the jeep. In Sri Lanka, Ella and Sigiriya pair tea hills with an ancient rock city, while Munnar does the same for India.
Northern Vietnam has three dramatic landscapes in a week: Ha Long Bay by overnight cruise, the river valleys of Ninh Binh and the terraced hills of Sapa. China's karst scenery around Yangshuo and the stone pillars of Zhangjiajie are just as striking.
Wildlife lovers can track tigers at Ranthambore or orangutans in Sabah. Japan's Niseko has powder snow in winter. In Central Asia, Issyk-Kul, Kolsai Lakes and Lake Kaindy and the Fann Mountains reward couples with a taste for remote roads.
Nonstops and Connections
East Asia is the easy reach. Nonstops link Tokyo and Osaka with many US hubs in roughly 11 to 14 hours. Seoul has nonstops from about a dozen US cities and Taipei from several. Singapore Airlines flies nonstop from Newark, New York JFK, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle in 16 to 19 hours. Philippine Airlines serves Manila from five US cities, with Chicago added from November 9, 2026. Vietnam Airlines flies San Francisco to Ho Chi Minh City in about 16 hours.
Thailand and Bali have no nonstops, so expect 20 hours or more via an Asian or Gulf hub. Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Cambodia also need a connection.
Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book. In Bhutan, a licensed tour operator arranges your guide, driver and seats on the limited flights into Paro, so book early.
Stretching the Budget, Choosing the Splurge
Asia is where a honeymoon budget goes furthest. All figures are approximate.
- Vietnam: a comfortable trip with boutique hotels and a mid-level Ha Long Bay cruise runs roughly $200 to $350 a day per couple.
- Cambodia, Laos and Uzbekistan: good boutique hotels often cost $50 to $180 a night.
- Sri Lanka: midrange boutique hotels run about $80 to $200 a night. A car and driver is commonly $60 to $100 a day.
- Thailand: upscale pool-villa resorts run about $300 to $700 a night. Green season rates can fall by a third or more.
The splurges are just as clear. Luxury ryokan in Kyoto and Hakone often start well into four figures a night. Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee alone is $100 per adult per night at the current reduced rate, before guides and lodges. Private-island resorts in Palawan and remote Sumba sit above $1,000 a night. Many couples split the difference with a few cheap, rich travel days followed by a splurge finish.
Safety and Travel Advisories
Most of Asia is low risk for American couples. Here is how the State Department rated the countries we cover in October 2026.
- A few countries in the region are under Do Not Travel advisories and are not covered on our site.
- Level 1, normal precautions: Bhutan, Brunei, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
- Level 2 with zones to avoid: India is Level 4 for Jammu and Kashmir outside eastern Ladakh and Leh, for Manipur and for its western border areas. The Philippines is Level 4 for the Sulu Archipelago and Marawi and Level 3 for most of Mindanao outside Siargao. Cambodia is Level 4 within 50 kilometers of the Thailand border, so fly between the two countries. China's advisory cites arbitrary enforcement of laws, including exit bans.
For Japan, Thailand and Indonesia, check travel.state.gov before booking.
Temples and mosques across the region expect both of you to cover shoulders and knees, so pack a light scarf and long trousers or a skirt. Public kissing draws stares almost everywhere outside the big cities. Taiwan and Thailand, both with marriage equality, are among the most relaxed places in Asia. Brunei is dry, so plan on alcohol-free nights there. Dengue is common in Southeast and South Asia, so if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for your destination.
Two-Country Routes That Work
Short regional flights make Asia ideal for pairing countries. These combinations flow well in 12 to 16 days.
- Thailand and Cambodia: Bangkok and Siem Reap for temples, then a pool villa in Phuket or Koh Samui. Fly between them rather than crossing by land.
- Japan and South Korea: Kyoto and Tokyo, then a short flight to Seoul and Jeju Island.
- Vietnam and Laos: Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, then Luang Prabang, ending on Phu Quoc or in Hoi An.
- Singapore and Bali: a city stopover with Sentosa, then Ubud and Uluwatu.
- Nepal and Bhutan: the Kathmandu Valley, then a flight to Paro and Punakha.
- Hong Kong and Macau: Lantau Island and the harbor, then an hour across the water to Cotai.
- Sri Lanka alone covers both: Sigiriya and Ella inland, then Galle or Trincomalee, depending on the month.
Asia Honeymoon FAQ
What is the best country in Asia for a honeymoon?
It depends on the trip. Japan is best for culture, food and ryokan, with easy nonstops. Thailand and Bali have the most honeymoon resorts and pool villas. The Philippines has the most dramatic islands. Sri Lanka and Vietnam give the most variety for the money. Bhutan suits couples seeking quiet and mountains.
When is the best time for an Asia honeymoon?
November to April works for most beach destinations, including Phuket, Krabi & Railay, the Philippines and southern Sri Lanka. From June to August, choose Koh Samui, Bali or Trincomalee instead. Japan is at its best in spring and late fall. Nepal, Bhutan and Rajasthan peak in spring and fall.
Which Asian destinations have nonstop flights from the US?
Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines all have nonstops from several US cities. Vietnam has a nonstop from San Francisco, India from the New York area and China from a handful of gateways. Thailand, Bali, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Cambodia need at least one connection.
Is Asia a good budget honeymoon option?
Yes. Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan offer charming boutique hotels for roughly $50 to $200 a night and meals for a few dollars. Thailand's green season cuts resort rates by a third or more. Flights are the biggest cost, so save by choosing one country and staying longer.
How long should an Asia honeymoon be?
Plan at least 10 nights, since the long flights and time change eat into shorter trips. Twelve to sixteen nights lets you combine two countries, such as Japan and South Korea or Thailand and Cambodia, without rushing. For a single country with a city, a cultural stop and a beach, 10 to 12 nights is enough.
Is Bhutan worth the extra cost?
For couples who want quiet, mountains and a culture unlike anywhere else, many think so. Bhutan charges a Sustainable Development Fee of $100 per adult per night at the reduced rate scheduled to run until August 2027, plus a licensed guide and driver, which come bundled in your tour package. A week in Paro and Punakha pairs well with Nepal.
