The short answer

Tainan is the best food city on a Taiwan honeymoon and a lovely place to wander for two or three nights. Come between October and April, about 1 hour 45 minutes from Taipei by High Speed Rail. Stay in the old center, eat at family stalls and explore temples. Expect roughly $70 to $200 a night for good hotels.

Best for
  • Food lovers who like to explore
  • History and temple wandering
  • A slower stop between Taipei and the south
Maybe skip it if
  • You want a beach or resort stay
  • You can only go in typhoon season

Tainan is Taiwan's oldest city and its unofficial food capital. It was the island's capital for more than two centuries. The old center is still threaded with temples, crumbling merchant houses and narrow lanes where families have sold the same dish for generations. For couples who love wandering and eating, it may end up being the highlight of a Taiwan honeymoon.

The city is about an hour and 45 minutes from Taipei by High Speed Rail, so it works as a two or three night stop between Taipei and the south. The pace is slower than the capital. Mornings start with beef soup, afternoons are for temple-hopping and coffee in restored old houses and evenings bring night markets and lantern-lit streets.

Come between October and April, when the weather is warm and mostly dry. Summer is hot, humid and stormy. Tainan is not a resort destination. It is a city to explore on foot, scooter or bike, one snack at a time.

Why Honeymoon in Tainan

Tainan rewards curiosity. The city's history runs from a 17th-century Dutch fort to Qing dynasty temples and Japanese-era buildings, all within a short walk of each other. Many of the old houses have been turned into cafés, guesthouses and bars, so the heritage feels lived in rather than preserved behind glass.

The food is the other big reason. Tainan is known across Taiwan for its snacks. Locals argue happily about which stall does the best noodles or fish soup. You can eat your way across the city for days without repeating a dish.

It is also affordable and easygoing. There are few big-ticket sights. A good day is simply walking, eating, ducking into temples and sitting in a café, which is exactly the rhythm many couples want after a busy Taipei stay.

When to Go

October through April is the best time. Days are warm, often in the 70s Fahrenheit, rain is light and walking around the city is comfortable. December through February is the coolest stretch but still mild.

May brings rising heat and the start of the plum rains. From June through September, Tainan is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms and the risk of typhoons, which can disrupt travel for a day or two.

Lunar New Year, usually in late January or February, is a lively time, but many family-run food stalls close for several days. If eating is your main goal, avoid the holiday week or check which favorites will be open.

Weekends bring domestic tourists to Anping and the old streets. Visit the busiest sights on weekdays if you can.

Where to Stay

Base yourselves in the old Central West District, where most temples, food stalls and old streets are within walking distance.

For a polished hotel, Silks Place Tainan is a stylish option near the old center, with a rooftop pool and good restaurants. Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, near the train station, offers big rooms with city views and easy transport links.

For something more personal, look at boutique guesthouses in restored old houses. Tainan has many, often with just a few rooms, wooden floors, courtyard gardens and thoughtful design. They suit couples who want character more than amenities.

Anping, on the coast to the west, is quieter in the evening and close to the fort and tree house. It is a good choice for a night or two, but most couples prefer the central district for food.

Romantic Things to Do

Walk Shennong Street in the evening, when red lanterns light the old shophouses and small bars open their doors. Then wander the lanes around Chihkan Tower, which is especially lovely at night.

In Anping, explore the remains of Fort Zeelandia, now Anping Fort. Stay for sunset over the sea. Next door, the Anping Tree House is an old warehouse where banyan roots have grown through the walls and roof.

Take a small boat through the Sicao Green Tunnel, a channel through mangroves where branches close overhead.

Visit the Confucius Temple, one of the oldest in Taiwan, for a quiet walk under old trees. Step inside the restored Hayashi Department Store, a 1930s building with a rooftop shrine. Share shaved ice afterward.

Getting There and Around

Fly into Taipei Taoyuan (TPE), which has nonstop flights from several US cities. From the airport, take the airport metro to Taoyuan HSR station, then the High Speed Rail south to Tainan. The train ride takes about an hour and a half. From Taipei Main Station, allow about an hour and 45 minutes.

Tainan's HSR station is outside the city. Take a short local train to Tainan Station, a shuttle bus or a taxi into the center.

In the city, scooters are how locals get around, but renting one requires the right license and confidence in traffic. Bikes, taxis and walking work well. Buses exist but are less convenient. Ride-hailing apps and taxis are affordable for longer hops to Anping or the green tunnel.

Food and Drink

Tainan's food is a big part of the trip. Start the day with beef soup, thin slices of raw beef cooked in hot broth at the table, often eaten at dawn. Milkfish soup and congee are other local breakfasts.

Danzai noodles, a small bowl of noodles with minced pork and a shrimp, is the city's signature snack. Coffin bread, a thick slice of fried toast filled with creamy stew, is a fun novelty.

Try shrimp rolls, oyster omelets and rice cakes topped with savory sauce. Almond tofu and shaved ice make good desserts.

Garden Night Market, open on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, is the city's biggest. For drinks, the small bars on Shennong Street and in restored houses make a relaxed end to the night.

Honeymoon Tips

The US State Department rates Taiwan Level 1, exercise normal precautions. Tainan is very safe, including late at night.

Many food stalls close once they sell out. Some open only in the morning. Start early and ask your hotel which favorites are open on which days.

Carry cash. Smaller stalls and markets often do not take cards, though convenience stores, hotels and larger restaurants do. An EasyCard for transit also works at many shops.

Temples are open to visitors. Dress respectfully, keep your voice down and avoid stepping on the raised threshold at the entrance.

In summer, plan sightseeing for the morning and evening. Keep afternoons for cafés, museums and air-conditioned rest.
