Why Honeymoon on Nusa Lembongan
Lembongan gives you the island feeling many couples picture before they land in Bali and meet the traffic on the Bypass road. Distances are tiny. Jungut Batu to Mushroom Bay is about a 35 minute walk, so a day can be a swim, a nap and a sunset without a single transfer.
It also works for couples with different energy levels. One of you can learn to dive or chase surf breaks on the outer reef while the other reads by a villa pool. Then you meet for grilled fish. The island is small enough that splitting up for a morning is easy.
The third reason is access. Because Sanur is so close, you can pair Lembongan with Ubud or Uluwatu on the same trip without losing a full day to travel.
When to Go
The dry season, roughly April through September, brings the calmest seas, the clearest water and the most reliable sunsets. Lembongan is noticeably drier than mainland Bali even in the shoulder months, which makes October and November reasonable bets if you want lower prices.
July and August are the busiest weeks, with Australian and European school holidays filling the better villas. Book those dates well ahead.
January and February are the wettest months. Rain usually comes in heavy bursts rather than all-day gray, but the crossing from Sanur can be choppy and visibility for snorkeling drops.
For marine life, mantas are a year-round sighting off Nusa Penida. Mola mola season runs roughly July to October, when the water around the islands turns colder and divers travel specifically for it.
Where to Stay
Each beach has its own character, so choose by mood.
- Jungut Batu, on the northwest coast, has the most choice and the best sunset views across to Bali. It is the busiest strip, with dive shops and casual cafes.
- Mushroom Bay is a sheltered white-sand cove with calm swimming. It gets crowded with day-trippers around midday and goes quiet after about 3 pm.
- Sunset Beach (Sandy Bay) and Dream Beach in the south feel more remote, with low limestone cliffs and villa resorts above the surf.
- Nusa Ceningan, across the bridge, suits couples who want cliff views and fewer people.
Batu Karang Lembongan Resort is a long-running upscale option above Jungut Batu. Expect private-pool villas to run very roughly $150–400 a night, with simpler bungalows well below that (approximate).
Romantic Things to Do
Book a snorkel or dive trip to the manta sites off Nusa Penida early in your stay so you have a spare morning if seas cancel it. Swimming beside rays with wingspans wider than you are tall is the moment most couples remember.
Walk out to Devil's Tear late in the afternoon, when waves explode through the rock and throw rainbows in the spray. Stay behind the barriers. People have been swept off these ledges.
Rent bicycles and cross the Yellow Bridge to Nusa Ceningan. The bridge is narrow and rattles, which is half the fun. On the far side, the Blue Lagoon is a cliff-ringed inlet of very blue water.
Hire a boatman to pole you through the mangroves on the north coast in a jukung, a traditional outrigger. Morning light is softest and the water is still.
Getting There and Around
Fly into Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). Indonesia has no nonstop flights from the US, so most couples connect through Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong or Doha. From the airport, Sanur is about 30 minutes by car outside rush hour.
Fast boats from Sanur mostly land at Jungut Batu and take about 35 to 45 minutes. Expect a wet landing: boats nose onto the beach and you step into knee-deep water, so pack light and wear sandals. Operator standards vary. Choose a well-reviewed company with life jackets on board.
On the island, walking and cycling cover most needs. Scooters are available, but roads are steep and rough in places. Hotels use small pickup trucks for luggage transfers. Short boat taxis run between Jungut Batu and Mushroom Bay.
Food and Drink
Eating on Lembongan is casual and fish-forward. Small warungs along Jungut Batu cook nasi campur, grilled mahi-mahi and sambal matah, the raw shallot and lemongrass relish that wakes up anything it touches. Prices at family-run places stay low by resort standards.
For a dressier night, the beach club at Sandy Bay is the island's polished option, with barbecued seafood, steaks and tables facing the sunset. Many villa resorts also set up private dinners on the sand if you ask in advance.
Try fresh coconut straight from the husk after a hot walk. Look for seaweed snacks made from the crop you see drying on tarps by the road. Drink bottled or filtered water. Most hotels provide refills.
Honeymoon Tips
Mention your honeymoon when booking. Smaller resorts often add flowers, a cake or an upgrade when they can.
Respect the currents. Dream Beach and Sunset Beach have strong rip currents and are best left to strong swimmers. Mushroom Bay and the mangrove side are the calm spots.
Carry some cash. ATMs exist in Jungut Batu but can run dry. Small warungs rarely take cards.
Dengue occurs across Indonesia, so use repellent at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before you go.
The island clinic handles minor problems only. Serious cases go back to Bali, so buy travel insurance with medical evacuation.
