Koh Phangan

The jungle-covered island next to Samui, far calmer than its party reputation

The short answer

Koh Phangan is a good honeymoon island once you look past Haad Rin. The northeast bays and west coast offer jungle-backed beaches, pool villas and sunset views, a short boat ride from Koh Samui's airport. It follows the Gulf weather, so February to August is usually best and summer works well. Plan four nights or so, ideally paired with Samui. Costs run from budget bungalows to luxury resorts.

Best for
  • A summer honeymoon in Thailand
  • Secluded bays reached by boat
  • Couples who enjoy yoga and wellness
Maybe skip it if
  • You want polished luxury everywhere you go
  • You plan to travel from October to December

Koh Phangan is famous for one beach and one night a month. The Full Moon Party at Haad Rin, on the island's southeastern tip, draws thousands of people to dance on the sand. Everything else about Phangan is quieter than that reputation suggests. The island covers about 125 square kilometers, most of it hilly jungle. Its coast is broken into dozens of bays. Many of them can only be reached by a steep road or by boat.

For a honeymoon, that geography is a gift. Couples stay on the northeastern bays of Thong Nai Pan, on remote Bottle Beach or along the west coast, where the sun sets over the Gulf of Thailand. The vibe ranges from barefoot bungalow to polished pool villa, with a strong wellness scene of yoga, healthy cafes and massage. Koh Samui, with its airport and bigger resorts, is a short boat ride away, so Phangan works well as a second, slower stop on a Gulf honeymoon.

Why Honeymoon on Koh Phangan

Phangan offers the scenery of a much more remote island without the long journey. You fly into Samui, cross on a boat and within an hour or two can be in a cove ringed by jungle with only a handful of other guests.

The island has history beyond the parties too. King Chulalongkorn, Rama V, visited the island many times in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Royal inscriptions remain carved on rocks at Than Sadet waterfall.

It also follows the Gulf weather pattern, which is drier than the Andaman coast through the summer months. That makes it a smart choice for couples who can only travel in June, July or August, when Phuket and Krabi are in their rainy season.

When to Go

The Gulf side of Thailand has its own seasons. The driest, sunniest stretch usually runs from about February to April. The months from May to September are often good, with showers but plenty of sun. This is the main advantage over the Andaman islands.

The heaviest rain tends to fall from about October to December, when storms can churn the sea and occasionally disrupt ferries. January is a transition month that can be windy.

Check the lunar calendar before you lock in dates. Around each full moon, boats and rooms fill up and Haad Rin gets very busy. If you stay elsewhere on the island it hardly matters, but ferries from Samui can be crowded on party nights. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Thailand.

Where to Stay

Thong Nai Pan, on the northeast coast, is the island's best honeymoon area. Two neighboring bays, Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai, have soft sand and calm water in the dry months. Anantara Rasananda sits on Thong Nai Pan Noi with pool villas, while Santhiya Koh Phangan Resort and Spa climbs the hillside between the two bays with teak buildings and sea views.

Bottle Beach, or Haad Khuad, on the north coast is reached mostly by longtail and has simple bungalows. Come for the isolation rather than the luxury.

The west coast, around Haad Yao, Haad Salad and Srithanu, has sunset views, boutique resorts and a laid-back wellness crowd. Avoid Haad Rin unless you want the party.

Romantic Things to Do

Book a full-day boat trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park, a scattering of more than 40 limestone islands west of Samui. Most tours include kayaking, snorkeling and a climb to a viewpoint over the green Emerald Lake on Koh Mae Ko. Choose a smaller boat for a calmer day.

On Phangan itself, hire a longtail to Bottle Beach for lunch and a swim, then continue along the coast to tiny coves. At Mae Haad, a sandbar links the main island with Koh Ma at low tide and the snorkeling off it is good when the water is clear.

Take a walk to Than Sadet waterfall and look for the royal inscriptions. Finish with a sunset drink on the west coast and a long Thai massage.

Getting There and Around

There are no nonstop flights from the US to Thailand, so most couples connect in Asia or the Middle East to Bangkok, then fly on to Koh Samui Airport (USM). From Samui, speedboats and ferries run to Phangan from several piers in roughly 20 to 60 minutes, landing mainly at Thong Sala. A boat also runs directly from Samui's north coast to Haad Rin. From the mainland, boats leave from near Surat Thani.

Phangan has had plans for its own airport for years, but do not count on it.

The island's roads are steep, with sharp bends and loose gravel in places. Scooter accidents are common, so only rent one if you are both confident riders. Taxis in the form of pickup trucks are easy to find. Resorts also arrange transfers.

Food and Drink

Thong Sala, the main town, has the island's best everyday eating. Its night market is full of grilled seafood, noodle stalls, mango sticky rice and roti. It makes a fun casual date.

The west coast around Srithanu is known for health food, with smoothie bowls, plant-based menus and good coffee. Resorts on Thong Nai Pan offer the most polished dining, from beachfront Thai restaurants to private dinners on the sand.

Southern Thai cooking here leans spicy and sour. Try a fiery gaeng som fish curry, a southern style yellow curry or grilled squid with chili and lime sauce. Fruit is excellent, especially pineapple, mangosteen and rambutan in season. Drink bottled or filtered water.

Honeymoon Tips

Check the full moon dates and decide in advance if you want to see the party. If you do, go for a few hours and stay elsewhere. Watch your drinks and stick together.

Do not let your first scooter ride be on Phangan's hills. Use taxis or resort transfers instead, especially on the roads to Thong Nai Pan and Bottle Beach.

Bring cash for longtails and small restaurants. ATMs are easiest to find in Thong Sala.

At temples and in villages, both partners should cover shoulders and knees. Thailand bans vaping and the law is enforced, so leave vapes at home. Drug laws are strict and penalties are severe, no matter what you hear at a beach party.

FAQ

Koh Phangan honeymoon FAQ

Is Koh Phangan good for a honeymoon?

Yes, if you stay in the right place. The northeast bays of Thong Nai Pan and the west coast are calm and romantic, with good resorts and beaches. Haad Rin, home of the Full Moon Party, is not a honeymoon base. Phangan pairs nicely with a few nights on Koh Samui for more polished luxury.

When is the best time to visit Koh Phangan?

The driest months are usually February to April. The summer months from May to September are often good too. The heaviest rain tends to fall from October to December. That pattern makes Phangan a strong summer honeymoon choice when the Andaman coast is in its rainy season.

How do we get from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan?

Ferries and speedboats run several times a day from piers on Samui's north and west coasts, taking roughly 20 to 60 minutes. Most land at Thong Sala, with one route going straight to Haad Rin. Resorts on Phangan can arrange transfers from the pier. Allow extra time around full moon nights.

Should we avoid the Full Moon Party dates?

You do not need to avoid them, but plan around them. Rooms near Haad Rin and boats from Samui fill up. Prices can rise. If you stay on Thong Nai Pan or the west coast, the party has little effect on your trip. If you want to see it, go for a few hours and leave early.

Koh Phangan or Koh Samui for a honeymoon?

Samui has the airport, more luxury resorts and a wider choice of restaurants. Phangan is wilder and quieter, with more secluded bays and a slower pace. Many couples combine them, spending three or four nights on each. If you want ease and five-star service, Samui. If you want seclusion, Phangan.
