The short answer

Takayama is a great honeymoon stop for couples who want a traditional town plus mountain scenery and hot springs. Plan two or three nights, ideally adding Okuhida or Shirakawa-go. Visit in April to May or October to November, or in winter for snow. Mid-range ryokan with two meals cost roughly $150 to $250 a night for two, approximately, with top inns far more.

Best for
  • Couples who love food and sake
  • Travelers linking Tokyo, Kanazawa and Kyoto
  • Hot spring fans who want mountain views
Maybe skip it if
  • You want beaches or a warm climate
  • You prefer big-city nightlife over quiet evenings

Takayama is a mountain town of dark timber merchant houses, small sake breweries and river bridges in Gifu prefecture, high in the Hida region. For centuries its carpenters were famous enough to be sent to build palaces in Kyoto. The old quarter, called Sanmachi, survives as three parallel lanes of latticed shopfronts, many still selling sake, miso and lacquerware.

It is the best base in Japan for couples who want a traditional town and real mountain scenery in one stop. An hour east, the Okuhida hot spring villages sit beneath the 3,000-meter peaks of the Northern Alps. Kamikochi, a high valley of clear rivers and larch forest, is a classic summer and autumn hike. The thatched farmhouses of Shirakawa-go are under an hour away by bus.

Plan two or three nights. Spend one in a Takayama ryokan near the old town and one in Okuhida with an outdoor bath. The JR Hida limited express from Nagoya follows a river gorge for most of the ride, which makes the journey part of the trip.

Why Honeymoon in Takayama

Takayama keeps a working-town feel that tourist-heavy places can lose. Farmers still set up stalls along the Miyagawa river each morning. The breweries still hang balls of cedar leaves over their doors when a new batch of sake is ready.

It also gives you range. In one trip you can taste local sake in Sanmachi, eat Hida beef three ways, soak in a riverside bath under snow peaks and walk among the gassho farmhouses of Shirakawa-go. That variety makes it easy for two people with different tastes to stay happy.

The pace is relaxed. Most of the old town is a 10-minute walk from the station. Evenings are quiet once day visitors leave. For couples coming from Tokyo or Kyoto, Takayama works as a reset between bigger cities, especially if you continue to Kanazawa on the far side of the mountains.

When to Go

April to May and October to November are the top choices. The Takayama Spring Festival on April 14 and 15 and the Autumn Festival on October 9 and 10 bring out towering, ornately carved floats, some with mechanical puppets. They are among the most celebrated festivals in Japan. Book rooms far ahead for those dates.

Mid-October to early November brings fall color to the old town and earlier color up in Okuhida and Kamikochi.

Summer is warm in town and cool in the Alps. It is the season for Kamikochi hikes, which is only open from mid-April to mid-November. June is the wettest month.

Winter is cold, with regular snow and temperatures that can drop well below freezing. It is also wonderfully atmospheric: snow on the dark rooftops, outdoor baths steaming in Okuhida and the gassho houses of Shirakawa-go lit up on select evenings. Pack proper boots.

Where to Stay

In Takayama itself, stay within walking distance of Sanmachi so you can wander the lanes early and late. Ryokan here range from family-run inns with wooden corridors to polished properties with in-room baths. Honjin Hiranoya, close to the old town, is a long-established ryokan with both larger and more intimate wings. Several modern hotels near the station suit couples who prefer beds to futons.

For a hot spring night, head to Okuhida Onsengo, a cluster of five villages including Hirayu and Shin-Hotaka. Inns here often have outdoor baths facing the river and mountains. Many also offer private baths you can reserve for the two of you.

Prices vary widely. Expect roughly $150 to $250 a night for two at a mid-range ryokan with dinner and breakfast. Top inns with in-room open-air baths start from about $400. Treat these as approximate.

Romantic Things to Do

Start early at the Miyagawa morning market for pickles, fresh fruit and grilled rice dumplings. Then walk the Sanmachi lanes before the tour groups arrive, stopping at the breweries for small tasting cups.

Visit Takayama Jinya, the old government office of the shogunate, with its tatami halls and rice storehouses. The Festival Floats Exhibition Hall displays several of the real floats year round.

In the hills, the Hida Folk Village gathers farmhouses relocated from around the region, including thatched gassho houses beside a pond.

Take a day in Okuhida. The Shinhotaka Ropeway climbs above 2,000 meters to a viewing deck facing the Northern Alps. In summer or autumn, hike Kamikochi's flat valley trails between Taisho Pond and Kappa Bridge.

For Shirakawa-go, go in the late afternoon or stay overnight in a farmhouse inn. The village is much quieter once day buses leave.

Getting There and Around

Most US couples arrive in Tokyo or Osaka and connect by Shinkansen to Nagoya. The JR Hida limited express runs from Nagoya to Takayama in about two and a half hours along the Hida River gorge. Chubu Centrair (NGO) is the closest major airport.

Nohi Bus highway coaches connect Takayama with Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa, Matsumoto and Tokyo's Shinjuku station. Many couples arrive from Tokyo and leave toward Kanazawa via Shirakawa-go, sending luggage ahead to save effort.

Takayama's old town is walkable. Rental bikes are easy to find. Buses run from the station area to Okuhida in about an hour to an hour and a half. Some continue to the Shinhotaka Ropeway.

Kamikochi is closed to private cars. Take a bus from Hirayu or Takayama. Bus schedules in the mountains change by season, so check times before you set out.

Food and Drink

Hida beef is the reason many couples come back. It is rich and well marbled, served as sukiyaki, grilled steak or as nigiri sushi lightly seared and placed on a rice cracker, a popular Sanmachi street snack. Hoba miso, beef and miso grilled on a large magnolia leaf over a small burner, is the classic local dish at ryokan and restaurants.

Takayama ramen has thin curly noodles in a light soy broth. Mitarashi dango, grilled rice dumplings brushed with soy instead of the usual sweet glaze, are sold from stands around town.

The region's cold winters and clean water support several old breweries in Sanmachi. Many offer tasting sets for a few hundred yen. Look for unfiltered or seasonal releases in winter.

In Okuhida, ryokan dinners often include river fish, mountain vegetables and Hida beef cooked at the table.

Honeymoon Tips

Book festival dates and autumn weekends early. Rooms near Sanmachi fill up first.

If you want to bathe together, reserve a room with a private outdoor bath or ask for a kashikiri family bath. Public baths are separate by gender. Some baths restrict tattoos, so private options save worry.

In winter, pack warm, waterproof footwear. Sidewalks freeze and snow can be deep in Okuhida and Shirakawa-go. Mountain buses may also run on reduced schedules.

The old town gets crowded between about 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Plan sake tastings early or late in the day. Many shops close by 5 p.m. and some restaurants by 8 p.m., so plan dinner or eat at your ryokan.

Takayama is very safe. Cash still helps for market stalls and small breweries, though cards work in most hotels and many shops.

FAQ

Takayama honeymoon FAQ

How many nights should we spend in Takayama?

Two nights in Takayama covers the old town, morning markets, Takayama Jinya and Hida Folk Village. Add a night in Okuhida for hot springs and the Shinhotaka Ropeway or Kamikochi. If you plan to visit Shirakawa-go, a fourth night in a farmhouse inn there is a lovely way to finish.

When are the Takayama festivals?

The Spring Festival is held on April 14 and 15 and the Autumn Festival on October 9 and 10. Both feature elaborately decorated floats, mechanical puppet shows and evening processions with lanterns. Rooms book out months ahead, so reserve early or stay in nearby Okuhida and come in by bus.

Is Takayama good in winter?

Yes, for couples who like snow. The old town looks wonderful under snow, outdoor baths in Okuhida are at their best and Shirakawa-go becomes a classic winter scene. It gets very cold, so pack warm layers and boots. Kamikochi is closed. Some mountain buses reduce their service.

Can we combine Takayama with Kanazawa?

Yes. It is one of the best routes in central Japan. Highway buses run from Takayama to Kanazawa, with stops at Shirakawa-go along the way. You can arrive from Nagoya or Tokyo, stay in Takayama, stop in Shirakawa-go and continue to Kanazawa, then take the Shinkansen back to Tokyo or on to Kyoto.

Is Hida beef as good as Kobe beef?

Many people think so. Hida beef comes from cattle raised in Gifu prefecture and is graded on similar strict standards for marbling and quality. It tends to be more affordable in Takayama than Kobe beef in Kobe. Try it as sushi at a street stand, as hoba miso and as a sukiyaki dinner.
