The short answer

Koh Phi Phi delivers Thailand's most famous island scenery and easy snorkeling, but it only works as a honeymoon if you stay away from the party village of Tonsai. Book a resort on a northern beach such as Laem Tong, visit Maya Bay early and keep it to two to four nights between November and April. Resort prices on the quiet beaches run from moderate to high.

Best for
  • Snorkeling and island hopping by boat
  • A short, scenic stop on an Andaman trip
  • Couples who like a lively village nearby
Maybe skip it if
  • You want a quiet island with no party scene at all
  • You dislike crowds at famous viewpoints

Koh Phi Phi is two islands with very different personalities. Phi Phi Don, the larger one, is where everyone stays. Its main village of Tonsai sits on a narrow sandy strip between two bays, packed with dive shops, bars and guesthouses. Phi Phi Leh, next door, is uninhabited and protected as part of a national park. It holds Maya Bay, the cove made famous by the film The Beach. It also holds Pileh Lagoon, a cliff-walled pool of green water.

Phi Phi works for a honeymoon on one condition: do not stay in Tonsai. The village is lively and loud late into the night. It also fills with day trippers by mid-morning. The answer is to book a resort on one of the beaches farther north or east, such as Laem Tong or Loh Bagao, which are reached by boat and feel like a different island. You then dip into the famous sights early or late, when the tour boats have gone. Then spend the rest of the day in a hammock with the cliffs to yourselves.

Why Honeymoon on Koh Phi Phi

The landscape is outrageous. Sheer limestone walls drop into water that shifts from turquoise to deep blue. The snorkeling around the islands is some of the most accessible in Thailand. There are no cars on Phi Phi Don, so getting around means walking paths and longtail boats.

Phi Phi also has history worth knowing. The 2004 tsunami destroyed most of the buildings in Tonsai. The island was rebuilt with help from volunteers from around the world. Visitors today walk through a village that came back from almost nothing.

For couples, Phi Phi is best as a two to four night stop within a longer Andaman trip, combined with quieter places such as Koh Lanta, Railay or Koh Yao Noi.

When to Go

The best months are November through April, when the northeast monsoon brings dry weather and calm seas on the Andaman side. December to March is the sweet spot for clear water and smooth boat rides. It is also when prices peak, especially over the holidays and Chinese New Year.

From May to October the southwest monsoon arrives. Rain usually comes in heavy bursts, but seas can be rough enough to cancel boat tours and make the ferry crossing uncomfortable. Rates drop and the island is quieter.

Maya Bay has been closed for periods in recent years to let the reef recover, including a long closure that ended in 2022. Park authorities can still close it during the low season, so check before you plan around it.

Where to Stay

Location decides your honeymoon here. Tonsai and the adjoining Loh Dalum Bay are convenient and full of restaurants, but they are also the center of the party scene, with music late into the night.

Long Beach, a short boat ride or walk south of Tonsai, is a calmer middle ground with views toward Phi Phi Leh.

The north of Phi Phi Don is where the honeymoon resorts are. Zeavola, at Laem Tong, is a long-established favorite with teak suites set back from a soft sand beach. Loh Bagao on the east coast has larger resort complexes with villas and pools. These beaches are mostly reached by your resort's boat, which keeps them quiet in the evening. Expect higher rates than in the village. Ask how transfers work before you book.

Romantic Things to Do

Charter a private longtail for the morning and head to Phi Phi Leh first. Maya Bay now has rules to protect it: boats drop visitors at the back of the island, time on the beach is limited and swimming in the bay is not allowed. Go early and it is still a memorable sight.

From there, swim in Pileh Lagoon, drift past Viking Cave and stop at Bamboo Island for white sand and snorkeling.

Back on Phi Phi Don, climb the steps to the viewpoints above Tonsai for the classic picture of the two curved bays. It takes about 30 minutes and is best near sunset. On another day, try a dive or a snorkel trip to Shark Point, where blacktip reef sharks are often seen.

Getting There and Around

There is no airport on Phi Phi. Most couples fly into Krabi Airport (KBV) or Phuket International Airport (HKT), usually connecting through an Asian or Middle Eastern hub since there are no nonstop flights from the US. Ferries from Krabi take roughly 1.5 to 2 hours and ferries from Phuket around 2 hours, with faster speedboats on both routes. In high season, boats also link Phi Phi with Koh Lanta and Railay.

All public boats land at the pier in Tonsai Bay. If you are staying at a resort in the north, arrange their boat pickup in advance.

There are no cars on the island. Paths connect Tonsai with Long Beach and some other bays, but most travel is by longtail. Agree on the price before you board.

Food and Drink

Tonsai has a dense mix of Thai restaurants, bakeries, seafood grills and international places. Quality varies, so look for spots that are busy with people eating rather than people drinking. Pad thai and green curry are easy, but try a southern Thai sour curry or a whole grilled fish with lime and chili.

Prices are higher than on the mainland because almost everything comes in by boat. Water and beer cost more too.

For something quieter, book dinner at your resort or at one of the beach restaurants on Long Beach, where tables sit on the sand facing Phi Phi Leh. Many northern resorts also set up private beach dinners. Bring cash for the village, since smaller places may not take cards.

Honeymoon Tips

Pick your beach before you pick your resort. A room with a great price in Tonsai can mean bass music until the early hours.

Do the famous sights early. Day trip boats from Phuket and Krabi arrive in waves from mid-morning, so being on the water by 7 or 8 makes a huge difference.

Expect a small local fee at the Tonsai pier and national park fees for Phi Phi Leh. Fees change, so keep some cash handy.

Pack reef-safe sunscreen and wear a rash guard for long snorkeling sessions. Drink plenty of water on the viewpoint climb. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Thailand, since mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue occur here.

FAQ

Koh Phi Phi honeymoon FAQ

Is Koh Phi Phi too much of a party island for a honeymoon?

It can be if you stay in Tonsai village, where bars run late and the streets are crowded. Choose a resort on Laem Tong or Loh Bagao in the north or on Long Beach instead. Those beaches are quiet in the evening and you can still visit the famous sights by boat.

Can we swim at Maya Bay?

Swimming in Maya Bay has been banned since it reopened to protect the recovering reef. Visitors land at the back of the island, walk to the beach and have a limited time there. The bay can also close during the low season. Check current park rules before you go.

How do we get to Koh Phi Phi from the US?

Fly to Krabi (KBV) or Phuket (HKT), usually with one connection in Asia or the Middle East. From either airport, transfer to the pier and take a ferry of about 1.5 to 2 hours. Speedboats are faster. Resorts on the quieter beaches can arrange private transfers.

How many nights should we spend on Phi Phi?

Two to four nights is plenty for most couples. That covers a private boat day, the viewpoint hike, a snorkel trip and some beach time. Phi Phi works well as part of an Andaman loop with Koh Lanta, Railay or Koh Yao Noi, which give you a slower pace.

Is Phi Phi or Railay better for a honeymoon?

Railay is calmer, has easier access from Krabi and offers climbing and cave beaches, while Phi Phi has better snorkeling and the famous Maya Bay. Many couples do both, since ferries link them in high season. If you can only choose one and want quiet, Railay is the safer pick.
