The short answer

Con Dao is Vietnam's quietest beach honeymoon, a protected archipelago with empty coves, healthy reefs and nesting green turtles. Go March to June for calm seas and beach time, or June to September to see turtles nest and hatch. It suits couples who prize privacy and nature over nightlife. Six Senses Con Dao is the top-end splurge, while guesthouses in Con Son town are simple and cheap. The island's prison history is sobering and worth seeing. Don't miss an overnight turtle watch on Bay Canh.

Best for
  • Couples who want empty beaches
  • Snorkelers, divers and turtle lovers
  • Pairs ending a Vietnam trip quietly
Maybe skip it if
  • You want bars and lots of restaurants
  • You can only travel November to February

Con Dao is what Phu Quoc was before the resort boom. It may stay that way, since much of the archipelago is a protected national park. More than a dozen islands and islets sit roughly 110 miles off Vietnam's southern coast. Con Son, the main island, has one small town, a quiet coastal road and beaches that are often empty in the morning. Forest runs down to the water. Green sea turtles haul themselves onto the outer islands to nest.

The romance here is low-key: a scooter ride along the coast, snorkeling off a deserted cove, seafood in town under the almond trees. It comes with weight, too. For more than a century the island held one of the harshest prison systems in Asia, first under the French and later under the South Vietnamese government. The preserved camps are a moving part of any visit. Couples who want privacy and a slower pace than the rest of Vietnam tend to fall hard for it.

Why Honeymoon in Con Dao

Few beach destinations in Southeast Asia still feel this uncrowded. There are no high-rise strips, no jet-ski rentals lining the sand and only a handful of upscale hotels. On many mornings you will share a beach with a fisherman or nobody at all.

The setting suits couples who like nature. Reefs fringe much of the coast. In the calm season the water can be the clearest in Vietnam, which makes for good diving and snorkeling. The national park protects forest trails, mangroves and nesting green turtles. Six Senses Con Dao, one of the best-known honeymoon resorts in the country, gives the island a top-end option without spoiling the mood. If you have already done the classic Vietnam route or simply want to end somewhere quiet, Con Dao is worth the extra flight.

When to Go

March to May is the calm season, with flat seas, clear skies and the best conditions for boat trips. Underwater visibility is usually best between February and July. June to September brings the southwest monsoon, with afternoon showers and some rougher days, but it is also turtle season. Green turtles nest from roughly March to October, with hatchlings emerging from May into December.

From November to February, strong northeast winds churn the sea. Flights can be delayed, boat trips are often cancelled and swimming is limited on exposed beaches. It stays warm year-round, but if beach time is the priority, aim for March through June. For turtles, the overlap from about June to September gives the best odds of seeing nesting and hatching on the same trip.

Where to Stay

Six Senses Con Dao sits on Dat Doc beach, a long curve of sand on the east side of Con Son, with wooden villas, private pools and the brand's familiar focus on sustainability. It is the island's honeymoon address and works with the national park on turtle conservation.

In Con Son town, small hotels and guesthouses line the waterfront promenade. They are simple but put you near restaurants, the market and the historic sites, at prices that leave room for a dive trip. A few mid-range resorts near town add pools and sea views. Because rooms are limited, book early for March to May and for Vietnamese holiday periods, when domestic visitors arrive on pilgrimage to the island's memorial sites.

Romantic Things to Do

The highlight in season is an overnight turtle watch on Bay Canh island, arranged through the national park. Rangers guide small groups to see mothers nesting on the beach and hatchlings released toward the sea. Book well ahead and expect very basic accommodation.

On easier days, rent a scooter and ride the coastal road, stopping at Dam Trau beach near the airport, where planes come in low over the sand. Snorkel off Ong Dung beach at the edge of the forest, or book a boat trip to the outer islands with a dive center. Hike park trails to quiet coves. In the evening, walk the waterfront promenade in Con Son town while the fishing boats come home.

The Island's History

Con Dao's prisons are not an optional footnote. From the 1860s until 1975, the French and then the South Vietnamese government held political prisoners here. Tens of thousands died. You can visit Phu Hai prison and the notorious tiger cages, open-roofed pits where guards watched prisoners from walkways above. The Con Dao Museum provides context.

At Hang Duong Cemetery, the grave of Vo Thi Sau, a young resistance fighter executed on the island, draws Vietnamese visitors who come to pray late at night. Americans are welcome and rarely meet any hostility, though a respectful, quiet manner matters. Many couples find the visit sobering in a way that deepens the trip. It also helps explain why the island has stayed so lightly developed.

Getting There and Around

Con Dao Airport (VCS) has daily flights from Ho Chi Minh City, about an hour on smaller aircraft, plus some services from other cities. Baggage limits on the smaller planes can be strict, so check before packing. High-speed ferries also run from the mainland, but the crossing can be long and rough.

The airport is about 20 minutes by car from Con Son town. Six Senses and most hotels arrange transfers. On the island, scooters are the usual way to explore the coastal road, which carries little traffic. Hotels can also arrange cars with drivers. Boat trips to the outer islands leave from Ben Dam port in the south, booked through tour operators and dive centers in town.

Food and Drink

Seafood dominates. In Con Son town, the night market and small restaurants grill fish, squid, lobster and sea snails, often bought fresh that morning and cooked to order. Bang nuts, from the tropical almond trees that shade the streets, are a local snack sold roasted or as candy.

Dining is simple and cheap outside the resorts. Many places close early, so plan to eat by 8 or 9 p.m. Six Senses has the island's most polished restaurants and will set up dinner on the beach on request. Try com tam, broken rice with grilled pork, at a breakfast stand. Drink plenty of fresh coconuts. Alcohol is easy to find but bar life is minimal, which suits most couples who choose this island.

Honeymoon Tips

Plan at least three nights. Flights are limited and the pace is slow by design. Fly in early in the day so a delay does not eat into your first night. Keep a buffer day before international flights home, especially from November to February when wind disrupts schedules.

Bring cash, since ATMs are few and many small places do not take cards. Pack reef-safe sunscreen and your own snorkel mask if you have one. Respect turtle rules, which mean no flash photography and no touching. Follow the rangers' instructions at all times. Dress modestly at the cemetery and prison sites. Book Six Senses or a dive trip early in peak months, because supply on the island is small.

FAQ

Con Dao honeymoon FAQ

How do we get to Con Dao from the US?

Fly to Ho Chi Minh City, either nonstop from San Francisco or with one connection in Asia, then take a domestic flight of about an hour to Con Dao Airport. Domestic seats are limited, so book early and allow a buffer. Most couples spend a night in Ho Chi Minh City first to recover from the long haul and avoid a missed connection.

Is Con Dao better than Phu Quoc for a honeymoon?

It depends on what you want. Con Dao is quieter and wilder, with turtles, reefs and forest trails, but it has few restaurants and only a handful of upscale hotels, with Six Senses the standout. Phu Quoc has more hotels, sunset bars and activities, plus easier flights. Couples who prize solitude choose Con Dao. Those who want variety usually pick Phu Quoc.

When is turtle season in Con Dao?

Green sea turtles nest on Con Dao's outer islands from roughly March to October, with hatchlings emerging from about May into December. Overnight watching trips to Bay Canh island run through the national park and need advance booking. Sightings are never guaranteed, but mid-season visits give the best odds of seeing both nesting and hatching.

Is Con Dao good for diving and snorkeling?

Yes. Con Dao has some of the healthiest reefs in Vietnam within its protected marine park. Visibility is often best between February and July. Dive centers in Con Son town run trips to the outer islands, while snorkelers can reach coral straight from shore at beaches like Ong Dung. From November to February, wind often cancels boat trips.

Is it appropriate to visit the prisons on a honeymoon?

Yes. Many couples find it one of the most meaningful parts of their stay. The sites are well preserved and explained through museum displays and guides. They are emotionally heavy, so plan a relaxed afternoon afterward. Dress modestly and keep voices low, especially at Hang Duong Cemetery, which remains a place of active worship.
