The short answer

Yes, for couples who want China's most romantic countryside at a slow pace. Limestone peaks rise from rice paddies along the Li and Yulong rivers, with bamboo rafts, bike rides and terraces at dusk. September to November is best; October is the favorite, though Golden Week is very busy. Stays run from family-run farmhouse lodges to the Alila splurge in an old sugar mill, generally well below Bali or Thailand prices for similar scenery. Give it three nights or more. Don't miss a bamboo raft on the Yulong River.

Best for
  • Couples resting midway through China
  • Cyclists and beginner rock climbers
  • Couples who prefer landscapes to beaches
Maybe skip it if
  • You want beaches and ocean swimming
  • You can only spare a day trip

If you have seen a classical Chinese landscape painting, you already know Yangshuo. Thousands of limestone towers rise straight out of rice paddies here, with the Li and Yulong rivers winding between them and water buffalo standing in the shallows. Morning mist hangs between the peaks most of the year. It is the most romantic countryside in China and the easiest to enjoy at a slow pace.

The town itself is lively and touristy, built around the neon of West Street. The magic is a few miles out. Couples stay in converted farmhouses and riverside lodges, spend the mornings on bicycles or bamboo rafts and the evenings on terraces watching the light fade off the karst.

Most visitors arrive through Guilin, about an hour and a half away. Many ride the Li River cruise between the two. Three nights is the minimum to feel the rhythm. Four or five gives you time to hike, climb or do nothing at all, which here may be the best plan of the lot.

Why Honeymoon in Yangshuo

Yangshuo is the place to exhale after the big cities. The scenery does the work: karst peaks in every direction, clear rivers and small villages where the loudest sound is a rooster. It feels a world away from Beijing or Shanghai, though it is a short flight from either.

For couples, the appeal is how active and lazy days blend together. You can bike to Dragon Bridge in the morning, float back on a bamboo raft, nap through the afternoon heat and eat beer fish on a riverside terrace at night. The landscape is also one of the best rock-climbing areas in Asia, with guided routes for beginners.

The hotel scene has grown up in recent years. Boutique lodges with infinity pools and peak views now sit along the Yulong River. A converted 1960s sugar mill houses one of the most stylish hotels in rural China. Prices stay well below what similar scenery would command in Bali or Thailand.

When to Go

September through November is the sweet spot. Rains taper off, skies clear, temperatures settle into the 70s Fahrenheit and the rice harvest turns the valleys gold in autumn. October is the favorite month, though Golden Week in the first days of the month is very busy.

Spring, from March to May, brings green paddies and blooming canola but also frequent showers. Mist is common, which can be moody and beautiful or simply gray. June is usually the wettest month. Heavy rains can raise the rivers enough to suspend rafting for a few days.

July and August are hot and humid with afternoon storms, yet the scenery is at its greenest and the rivers run full. Winter, December to February, is cool and quiet. Low water in the dry months can shorten Li River cruise routes. Wear layers, since lodges are not always well heated.

Where to Stay

Skip West Street unless you want nightlife. The best stays are in the countryside around the Yulong River and along the Li River just outside town.

Alila Yangshuo occupies a restored sugar mill on the Li River, with sleek concrete rooms, a pool framed by karst peaks and the old factory trusses kept as design features. It is the splurge choice and a favorite with honeymooners.

Yangshuo Mountain Retreat sits right on the Yulong River and has long been a reliable pick for couples who want river views, simple rooms and bikes at the door. Many smaller boutique lodges in the villages near Jiuxian and Yulong are run by local families in restored farmhouses, often with rooftop terraces facing the peaks.

For a night with the Li River outside your window, look at the village of Xingping, upstream from Yangshuo, where several small inns overlook the bend shown on the 20 yuan note.

Romantic Things to Do

Take a bamboo raft down the Yulong River. A boatman poles you over small weirs while the peaks drift past. The stretch near Dragon Bridge is the prettiest. Go early in the day to beat the line of rafts.

Rent bicycles or e-bikes and follow the farm roads between villages. Moon Hill, with its natural arch, is a short climb of several hundred steps with a view across the valley that rewards a sunset visit.

Cruise the Li River from Guilin, a trip of around four hours past some of the most famous scenery in China. Alternatively, ride a small raft on the quieter section between Yangdi and Xingping. At Xingping, hike up Laozhai Hill for sunrise.

After dark, watch Impression Sanjie Liu, a large outdoor light show staged on the Li River with the karst peaks lit as a backdrop. Book a cooking class to learn beer fish before you leave.

Getting There and Around

Fly into Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL), which has connections from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other major cities. A private car to Yangshuo takes roughly 75 to 90 minutes. Many hotels arrange pickups.

High-speed trains also stop at Yangshuo Station, about 40 minutes by car from town, on the line between Guilin and Guangzhou. From Guangzhou or Shenzhen the train is often the easiest option, around two and a half to three hours.

The Li River cruise from Guilin is another way in. It drops you in Yangshuo town with your luggage sent ahead by many tour operators. Once there, bikes, e-bikes and hired drivers cover everything. DiDi works in town, though rural pickups are limited, so ask your lodge to book cars for day trips like the Longji rice terraces, about three hours away.

Food and Drink

Beer fish is the signature dish: a whole river fish, often carp, fried and then braised in local beer with tomatoes, peppers and ginger. Every riverside restaurant claims its version is the best. Order it once in town and once in a village to compare.

Guilin rice noodles are the local breakfast, served in a bowl with crispy pork, peanuts and pickled beans. Look for stuffed dishes known as niang, where snails, tofu or vegetables are filled with seasoned pork. Tea grows in the hills and osmanthus flowers flavor cakes and wine.

For dinner with a view, the boutique lodges along the Yulong serve good Chinese and Western menus on terraces facing the peaks. West Street has plenty of bars if you want a livelier night. Sweet osmanthus wine makes an easy toast at the end of the day.

Honeymoon Tips

Build in at least three nights. The landscape looks best at dawn and dusk. Day-trippers from Guilin miss both.

Book the Li River cruise through your hotel or a reputable agency. Boats vary widely in quality. The four-star vessels with better food and deck space are worth the small premium.

Carry cash for bamboo raft tips, village snacks and parking fees, since rural vendors do not always handle foreign-linked payment apps smoothly.

Bring sunscreen, insect repellent and shoes that can get wet. Rafts take on a little water. Rural lanes are muddy after rain.

If you want to climb, book a guide with a reputable Yangshuo climbing school. Beginners can try top-rope routes on limestone walls just outside town. A morning on the rock makes a memorable story.

FAQ

Yangshuo honeymoon FAQ

Should we stay in Guilin or Yangshuo?

Stay in Yangshuo. Guilin is a pleasant city and the airport hub, but the scenery that people picture is around Yangshuo and the Yulong River. Most couples land in Guilin, take the Li River cruise or a car straight to Yangshuo and spend all their nights in the countryside lodges there.

Is the Li River cruise worth it?

Yes, for most first-time visitors. The cruise covers roughly four hours of famous scenery between Guilin and Yangshuo. Boats can feel crowded, so choose a higher-grade vessel and stand on deck. If you dislike big tours, the bamboo raft section between Yangdi and Xingping covers the most photogenic stretch with fewer people.

How many days do we need in Yangshuo?

Three nights is the minimum to raft, bike and cruise without rushing. Four or five nights lets you add a climbing morning, a cooking class or a day trip to the Longji rice terraces. Yangshuo is also a good place to rest in the middle of a longer China trip before heading to Shanghai or Hong Kong.

Is Yangshuo good in the rain?

Light rain and mist can make the karst look even more like a painting. Heavy downpours, most common in late spring and early summer, can close rafting and turn bike lanes muddy. Leave a flexible day in your plan and choose a hotel with a good terrace or spa for wet afternoons.

Can we combine Yangshuo with Hong Kong?

Easily. High-speed trains link the Yangshuo area with Guangzhou and Shenzhen in a few hours. Hong Kong is a short hop beyond. Hong Kong has nonstop flights to several US cities, which makes it an easy place to end the trip with a night or two of harbor views.
