Why Honeymoon on Lombok
Space is the main reason. On the south coast you can drive ten minutes from Kuta and have a bay like Mawun or Semeti almost to yourselves on a weekday morning. That kind of quiet is hard to find on Bali's busier beaches.
The variety helps too. One of you might want surf lessons and sunset beers. The other might prefer a waterfall hike or a long massage at a villa resort. Lombok covers both within a short drive.
There is also a growing comfort layer. The Mandalika resort area east of Kuta has brought international hotels and a MotoGP circuit, while smaller boutique stays still dot the hills above the bays. You can choose polished or simple without leaving the island.
When to Go
The dry season runs roughly May to September, with the south coast the driest part of the island. Expect clear days, cool nights in the hills and consistent surf from the southeast trade winds. Surf season broadly runs from late March through September.
October and April are good shoulder months, with greener hills and fewer visitors.
The wet season, about November to March, brings heavy afternoon storms and muddy back roads. January and February are the wettest. The Rinjani trekking routes typically close for part of the wet season, so check with the national park before planning a summit.
Check the race calendar if you plan to stay near Mandalika. Event weekends at the circuit fill hotels and raise prices fast.
Where to Stay
Choose a base by what you want from your days.
- Kuta Lombok is the hub of the south, with cafes, surf schools and small hotels within reach of Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak and Mawun.
- The Mandalika area just east has the big international resorts, such as the Pullman Lombok Merujani Mandalika, on a long beach near the circuit.
- Selong Belanak, west of Kuta, suits couples who want a gentle bay for beginner surfing and a few stylish boutique villas.
- The northwest coast near Medana Bay is home to The Oberoi Beach Resort Lombok, a quiet luxury option close to the Gili boat harbors.
- Senggigi on the west coast has older resorts and sunset views toward Bali.
Good boutique villas run very roughly $100–300 a night. Top resorts cost more (approximate).
Romantic Things to Do
Take a surf lesson together at Selong Belanak, where the sandy bottom and gentle waves make falling off painless. Even if neither of you stands up, it is a good morning.
Climb Bukit Merese, the grassy hill above Tanjung Aan, about an hour before sunset. The view takes in several bays at once. The walk up is short.
Drive north to Senaru for the waterfalls. Sendang Gile is a short walk from the road. Tiu Kelep takes longer, with a wade through a river, but rewards you with a cool curtain of water.
In the southwest, hire a boat around the small islands off Sekotong for snorkeling and empty sandbars. The area is also known for varied dive sites.
Getting There and Around
There are no nonstop flights from the US to Indonesia. Most couples fly into Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) via a Pacific or Gulf hub, then take a short domestic flight to Lombok International Airport (LOP). Some international connections also land at LOP directly, usually via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.
LOP sits in the south-central part of the island near Praya. Kuta Lombok is about 30 minutes away. Senggigi takes about 1.5 hours.
Fast boats also link Bali with Lombok and the Gilis, but seas can be rough, especially in the windy months. Choose an established operator.
On the island, hire a car with a driver for day trips. Roads between the southern bays are steep in places. Scooter riders should be genuinely confident.
Food and Drink
Lombok's food is spicier than Bali's. Ayam taliwang is the island's signature: chicken grilled with chili and shrimp paste until charred. It usually comes with plecing kangkung, water spinach under a sharp tomato and chili sambal. Ask for less heat if you need it.
Kuta Lombok has a lively cafe scene with good coffee, poke bowls and wood-fired pizza aimed at surfers. Beachfront warungs at Selong Belanak and Tanjung Aan sell grilled fish and fresh coconuts.
Alcohol is widely available in tourist areas and resorts. It is less common in local villages, reflecting the island's Muslim majority. During Ramadan, eat discreetly in public away from tourist zones. Drink bottled or filtered water.
Honeymoon Tips
Dress modestly in villages and markets. Both partners should cover shoulders and knees. Swimwear belongs on the beach.
At some bays, children and vendors sell bracelets and sarongs persistently. A smile and a firm no thanks works. Buy something small if you want, but you are not obliged.
Surf beaches can have strong rip currents. Swim in sheltered bays like Selong Belanak and ask locally about conditions.
Use repellent at dawn and dusk, since dengue is present. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
Lombok was hit by strong earthquakes in 2018. Rebuilding has long since progressed, but it is sensible to know your hotel's evacuation route, as anywhere in Indonesia.
