The short answer

Savannah is a romantic, walkable Southern city for couples who love history, food and slow strolls under live oaks. Stay in a historic inn near the squares, eat well and add a beach day on Tybee Island. Visit in spring or fall to avoid summer heat and the peak hurricane months. Expect roughly $250 to $450 a night for good inns.

Best for
  • History and architecture lovers
  • Couples on a moderate budget
  • A road trip with Charleston
Maybe skip it if
  • You want a full beach resort stay
  • You can only travel in high summer heat

Savannah is the Southern city for couples who want romance at a walking pace. Its Historic District was laid out in 1733 around a grid of public squares. Twenty-two of them survive today. Each is a small green room shaded by live oaks draped in Spanish moss, framed by antebellum houses and church spires. You can spend whole afternoons wandering from square to square with no plan at all.

The city also has a playful streak. Savannah allows open containers in much of the Historic District, so a cocktail in a plastic cup is part of the evening stroll. Its art college, SCAD, keeps the galleries and cafes young and creative. Tybee Island, a laid-back beach town, sits about 30 minutes away for a day of sand and seafood.

Savannah is smaller and a little less polished than Charleston, about two hours up the coast. Many couples love it for that. Spring and fall are the best seasons. Summer is hot and heavy with humidity, while hurricane season runs into the fall.

Why Honeymoon in Savannah

The city's layout does the work for you. Because the Historic District is a compact grid of squares, every walk feels like a series of small discoveries: a fountain, a carriage house, a bench under the oaks. It is one of the best-preserved urban plans in the country.

Savannah blends history with a lighthearted mood. You can tour elegant house museums, learn about the city's role in slavery and the Civil War and then end the night at a rooftop bar or a jazz club.

It suits couples with different interests. One of you might browse antique shops and galleries while the other kayaks the marshes or bikes to Forsyth Park. Food is a shared highlight, with Southern classics alongside creative modern kitchens. Prices are generally lower than in Charleston, which stretches a honeymoon budget further.

When to Go

March through May is the classic season. Azaleas bloom, temperatures are warm without being oppressive and outdoor dining is at its best. The St. Patrick's Day celebration in March is one of the biggest in the country, so book early or avoid those dates if you want calm.

October and November are equally good, with lower humidity and pleasant evenings.

June through September is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms. Hurricane season runs from June through November, with the highest risk from August to October. Consider trip insurance if you book during those months.

Winter is mild and quiet, with cool days that are fine for walking. December brings holiday decorations to the squares and lower hotel rates, though beach days on Tybee are out.

Where to Stay

Stay in or near the Historic District so you can walk everywhere. Historic inns in restored townhouses are the classic choice. The Gastonian, a pair of 1868 mansions joined together, is a longtime favorite with fireplaces in many rooms.

The Mansion on Forsyth Park blends Victorian architecture with a modern art collection right beside the park. Perry Lane Hotel is a stylish boutique hotel with a rooftop bar near the shopping streets. The Bellwether House is an intimate, elegant inn in a restored home.

River Street hotels give you water views but can be noisy at night. Expect roughly $250 to $450 a night for good inns and boutique hotels, rising on spring weekends and during St. Patrick's Day. A night or two on Tybee Island adds a beach to the trip.

Romantic Things to Do

Start in Forsyth Park, the city's largest green space, where the white fountain makes a natural meeting point. Then wander north through the squares, stopping at Chippewa, Madison and Lafayette squares for some of the finest architecture.

Bonaventure Cemetery, on a bluff above the Wilmington River, is hauntingly beautiful, with oak-lined paths and Victorian statuary. Go in the morning light.

Wormsloe State Historic Site has a long avenue of live oaks that is one of the most photographed spots in Georgia. Arrive early to beat the crowds.

In the evening, take a guided walking tour or a carriage ride through the squares. Spend a day on Tybee Island for the beach, the lighthouse and fresh shrimp. A sunset boat cruise or kayak trip through the salt marshes shows another side of the Lowcountry.

Getting There and Around

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) is about 20 minutes from downtown, with nonstop flights from many major cities including New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Washington, DC. Jacksonville (JAX) is about two hours south and sometimes cheaper.

Amtrak serves Savannah on its East Coast routes. The city is an easy drive from Charleston or Atlanta.

You won't need a car in the Historic District. Walking is the best way to get around. A free shuttle loops through downtown. Rideshares and pedicabs cover short trips. Rent a car for a day if you plan to visit Tybee Island, Wormsloe or Bonaventure Cemetery, or book a tour that includes transportation.

Food and Drink

Savannah cooks a mix of Southern comfort and Lowcountry seafood. Fried chicken, shrimp and grits, collard greens and peach cobbler are staples. Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room serves a famous family-style lunch at shared tables, with a line that forms well before opening.

The Grey, set in a restored 1938 Greyhound bus terminal, is the city's best-known modern restaurant, with chef Mashama Bailey's take on Southern cooking. Book well ahead.

For sweets, Leopold's Ice Cream has been scooping since 1919. On Tybee Island, look for fresh local shrimp and oysters in season.

The open-container rules let you carry a drink in a plastic cup between bars in much of the Historic District. Keep it to one cup per person and no glass.

Honeymoon Tips

Walk in the morning and evening during warm months. Midday heat can be draining, so plan a pool break or a nap.

Bring insect repellent. Gnats and mosquitoes can be intense, especially near marshes at dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before you go.

At Tybee Island, swim near lifeguard stands and watch for rip currents, which are common along the beach.

Dress is casual for most restaurants, though smart casual fits the nicer dining rooms. Comfortable shoes are essential, since sidewalks can be uneven with tree roots and old brick.

The Historic District is busy and generally safe at night, but stay alert on quieter blocks and use rideshares late. Avoid leaving valuables in parked cars.

FAQ

Savannah honeymoon FAQ

Is Savannah a good honeymoon destination?

Yes, especially for couples who enjoy history, food and walking. The leafy squares, historic inns and relaxed nightlife make it romantic without being stuffy. It works well for three to five nights and pairs easily with Charleston or Tybee Island. It is less ideal for couples who want a beach resort, though Tybee is close by.

Savannah or Charleston for a honeymoon?

Both are lovely. Charleston has more polished dining and nearby beaches with resort options. Savannah is smaller, a bit quirkier and often cheaper, with its famous squares and open-container rules. Many couples combine them, since they are about two hours apart. Choose Savannah if you like a looser mood and slower pace.

When is the best time to visit Savannah?

March through May and October through November offer the best weather, with warm days and pleasant evenings. Summer is hot, humid and stormy. Hurricane season runs from June through November. Avoid St. Patrick's Day weekend unless you want huge crowds, since it is one of the biggest celebrations in the country.

Do we need a car in Savannah?

Not in the Historic District, which is very walkable, with a free downtown shuttle and plenty of rideshares. A car helps for day trips to Tybee Island, Wormsloe and Bonaventure Cemetery, but tours and rideshares can cover those too. Parking downtown can be limited, so ask your hotel about options.

How much does a Savannah honeymoon cost?

Savannah is more affordable than many Southern cities. Good inns and boutique hotels often cost roughly $250 to $450 a night, with higher rates on spring weekends and holidays. Dinner for two at a top restaurant may run $150 to $250. Casual meals and walking tours keep the rest of the budget manageable.
