The short answer

Southern Utah is a red-rock honeymoon for adventurous couples who want slot canyons, dark skies and a pampered base instead of a beach. Spring (March to May) and fall (September to early November) bring warm days and cool nights; summer tops 100 degrees with flash-flood risk. Amangiri is the big splurge, often well above $3,000 a night (approximate), while glamping camps and lodges near Zion widen the options. Rent a car and expect long drives. Don't miss the light beams of Antelope Canyon on a guided tour.

Best for
  • Hikers and photographers who love outdoors
  • A dramatic honeymoon close to home
  • Couples pairing adventure with luxury
Maybe skip it if
  • You want beaches and turquoise water
  • Long drives between sights tire you

Southern Utah does not look like anywhere else on earth. Sandstone has been carved into slot canyons, arches, hoodoos and towering mesas. A turquoise lake snakes through red desert where a river once ran free. It is one of the most otherworldly landscapes in North America. For adventurous couples it makes a remarkable honeymoon.

This is a region best experienced slowly, ideally from a plush base and with a few road trips in between. Around Lake Powell and the Utah–Arizona border, you can walk through the glowing light beams of Antelope Canyon, stand on the rim at Horseshoe Bend and boat into hidden side canyons. A few hours' drive away lie Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks, with their own dramatic scenery. And at night, the skies are among the darkest in the country, with the Milky Way arching overhead. Pair all this with a hotel such as Amangiri and you have a honeymoon that feels both wild and thoroughly pampered.

Why Honeymoon in Southern Utah

The appeal is the sheer scale and drama of the scenery. Few places let you feel so small together, or so far from everyday life. Days can be as active or as restful as you like, from canyoneering and via ferrata climbs to scenic drives and long afternoons by the pool.

It also suits couples who want something different from the classic beach honeymoon. Instead of turquoise lagoons, you get red rock and endless sky; instead of a busy resort strip, you get silence. And because it is in the United States, there is no passport to worry about. Many couples can fly in and be in the desert the same day.

When to Go

Spring (March to May) and fall (September to early November) are the best seasons, with warm days, cool nights and comfortable hiking conditions. They are also the most popular, so book accommodations and tours well ahead.

Summer is very hot in the lower desert, with afternoon temperatures that can top 100 degrees. July to September brings monsoon storms that can cause flash floods in slot canyons. Tours will cancel if conditions are unsafe, so build flexibility into your plans. Winter is cold and quiet, with crisp, clear days, fewer crowds and occasional snow on the mesas and at higher elevations such as Bryce Canyon, which can be a gift for photographers.

Where to Stay

Our featured stay is Amangiri, one of the most celebrated hotels in America. Set near Canyon Point, close to Lake Powell and the Arizona border, it has just 34 minimalist suites plus the ten tented pavilions of Camp Sarika, each with a plunge pool. The architecture blends into the desert, the main pool wraps around a sandstone escarpment and rates typically include meals and guided hikes. It is a splurge in every sense, with rates often well above $3,000 a night (approximate). For many couples, it's a trip they'll only take once.

Beyond Amangiri, the region offers a wide range of options, from luxury glamping camps and boutique lodges near Zion to lakeside hotels in Page and houseboats on Lake Powell. Many couples combine a few nights at a luxury base with a road trip through the national parks, staying in towns such as Springdale, Kanab or near Bryce Canyon.

Romantic Things to Do

Antelope Canyon, near Page, Arizona, is the region's most famous slot canyon, with curving walls and shafts of light that look almost unreal. It lies on Navajo land and can only be visited with a guided tour, so book in advance. Nearby, Horseshoe Bend offers a dizzying view of the Colorado River looping around a sandstone cliff.

On Lake Powell, rent a boat or join a cruise to explore quiet coves and canyons, or kayak to a secluded beach. Adventurous couples can tackle a via ferrata climb, go canyoneering or take a scenic flight over the canyons. At night, find a dark spot away from lights and lie back under the stars. And if you have time, a road trip through Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks adds towering cliffs and fairy-tale hoodoos to the itinerary.

Getting There & Around

Page Municipal Airport (PGA), in Arizona, is the closest airport to Amangiri and Lake Powell, about 20 to 25 minutes from the resort, but has limited commercial service. Many travelers fly into Las Vegas (LAS, about four and a half hours by car) or Phoenix (roughly similar) and turn the drive into part of the adventure. St. George (SGU) is a convenient option for Zion. Private charters can fly directly to Page.

A rental car is essential for exploring. Distances are long, services can be sparse and cell coverage is patchy, so fill up with gas, carry water and download offline maps. Note that the area straddles the Utah–Arizona state line and time zones can differ, especially on Navajo land, so double-check tour times.

Food & Drink

Southern Utah is not a fine-dining destination in the way Napa is, which is one reason a full-board resort like Amangiri appeals to honeymooners. Its kitchens draw on American Southwest flavors and regional ingredients. Private dinners under the stars are a highlight.

On the road, expect hearty diners, barbecue joints, cafés and a growing number of creative restaurants in towns such as Springdale, Kanab and Page. Look for Navajo tacos made with fry bread, local beef and Southwestern spices. Utah has distinctive liquor laws, so check beer and wine availability ahead of time. Consider packing a bottle of something special for a sunset toast on the trail.

Honeymoon Tips

  • Book Antelope Canyon tours and popular dining times well ahead.
  • Start hikes early to avoid midday heat and always carry more water than you think you need.
  • Never enter slot canyons when storms are forecast; flash floods are a real danger.
  • Plan for long drives between parks and leave buffer time in your schedule.
  • Pack layers, as desert temperatures swing dramatically from day to night.
  • Check whether national parks require timed entry or permits for popular hikes before you go.

FAQ

Southern Utah honeymoon FAQ

Is Southern Utah a good honeymoon destination?

Yes, especially for couples who love the outdoors, photography and dramatic scenery. It offers slot canyons, national parks, lakes and some of the darkest night skies in the country, plus top-flight places to stay such as Amangiri. It suits couples who want adventure by day and a quiet, comfortable base by night rather than a beach resort.

How do we visit Antelope Canyon?

Antelope Canyon is on Navajo Nation land near Page, Arizona. It can only be visited on a guided tour with an authorized operator. Tours are popular and often sell out, so book early, especially for midday slots when light beams are most likely in summer. Tours may be canceled when flash floods are possible, so keep your schedule flexible.

When is the best time for a Southern Utah honeymoon?

Spring and fall offer the best combination of mild temperatures and comfortable hiking, though they are the busiest seasons. Summer is very hot and brings monsoon storms from roughly July to September. Winter is cold but quiet and clear. It can be beautiful for photography, with occasional snow on red rock.

How far is Amangiri from Zion and Bryce Canyon?

Zion and Bryce Canyon are both reachable as long day trips from Amangiri, but each involves several hours of driving round trip. Many couples prefer to spend a night or two near the parks, in towns such as Springdale or near Bryce, before or after their stay. The Grand Canyon and Grand Staircase-Escalante are also within driving range.

Do we need a car in Southern Utah?

Yes. Distances are long, public transportation is limited and many of the best sights are far apart. A rental car gives you flexibility to explore national parks, viewpoints and towns at your own pace. Amangiri provides transfers from Page airport, but even guests there often rent a car to explore the wider region.
