Rest Versus Discovery
In the Maldives, the resort is the whole trip. Days drift between your deck, the reef and the dinner table. Excursions are short boat rides to a sandbank or a snorkel site. It is ideal for couples who are exhausted after the wedding.
Sri Lanka is a journey. The Cultural Triangle in the dry north-central plains holds three UNESCO sites within a couple of hours of each other: Sigiriya, the Dambulla cave temples and Polonnaruwa. A few hours south, the hill country rises to tea estates where nights are cool enough for a fireplace. Then come the coasts, with Galle's walled fort town, whale watching off Mirissa and the quieter east around Trincomalee.
The trade-off is time on the road. Inland driving often averages 20 to 25 mph, so you will spend several hours a day in the car on travel days. Couples who see that as part of the adventure love Sri Lanka.
Seasons and Coasts
Both are warm year round. Both also follow two monsoons, which helps when planning a combined trip.
The Maldives is most reliable from January to April, with calm seas and peak prices. June to September is wetter and windier but cheaper. It also brings manta season in Baa Atoll.
Sri Lanka's monsoons hit opposite coasts at different times. The south and west, including Galle, Mirissa and the hill country, are best from December to April. The east coast around Trincomalee is best from May to September, when the Cultural Triangle is also dry and the elephant gathering at Minneriya usually peaks in August and September. October and November can be unsettled almost everywhere.
January to April is the classic window for a combined trip: southern Sri Lanka followed by the Maldives in its sunniest months. A summer trip works too if you swap the south coast for Trincomalee and accept a wetter Maldives.
Where You Will Stay
The Maldives offers a long roster of private-island resorts, many with overwater villas and butlers. Soneva Fushi, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru and Anantara Kihavah lead in Baa Atoll. Gili Lankanfushi and COMO Cocoa Island are close to the airport. JOALI in Raa Atoll and Six Senses Laamu sit at the top end.
Sri Lanka mixes boutique hotels, plantation bungalows and a few standout luxury stays. Amangalla occupies a historic building inside Galle Fort. Cape Weligama sits on a clifftop above the south coast. 98 Acres Resort & Spa in Ella looks over tea estates. Water Garden Sigiriya puts villas within sight of the rock. Tea country around Nuwara Eliya and Hatton has planters' bungalows for a cozy night or two.
You will move hotels every two or three nights in Sri Lanka. In the Maldives, one or two resorts cover the whole stay.
Budget and Value
Sri Lanka is far cheaper. All figures are approximate and swing with season and exchange rates.
In Sri Lanka, midrange boutique hotels run very roughly $80 to $200 a night for two with breakfast. Luxury properties such as plantation bungalows and design hotels on the coast are often $350 to $900 or more, frequently with meals included. A car and driver commonly costs $60 to $100 a day including fuel. A rice and curry lunch costs a few dollars, while dinner for two in Galle Fort can run $40 to $80. Budget around $30 to $50 per person for big sites and national parks.
In the Maldives, the luxury resorts we cover often start above $1,500 a night in high season. Taxes and a daily green tax can add a quarter or more. Seaplane transfers are priced per person.
That gap is why the combination works. Ten days in Sri Lanka can cost less than four nights in a Maldives overwater villa.
Getting There and Around
Neither has nonstop flights from the US. The routings overlap.
Sri Lanka's main airport is Bandaranaike International (CMB), about 22 miles north of Colombo. Couples usually fly Qatar Airways through Doha, Emirates through Dubai, Etihad through Abu Dhabi, Turkish Airlines through Istanbul or Singapore Airlines through Singapore. Total travel time is often 20 to 26 hours from the East Coast. Many flights arrive in the small hours, so book a first night near the airport or in Negombo.
The Maldives is reached through the same Gulf hubs to Velana International Airport (MLE), again with 20 or more hours of travel. Resorts are a speedboat or daylight seaplane ride away.
On the ground, Sri Lanka works best with a car and driver. The Kandy to Ella train is the scenic exception, about seven hours past tea estates and waterfalls. Reserved seats sell out early.
Comfort and Safety
The Maldives is about as low-stress as travel gets. Resort islands are relaxed and international. On local islands, both of you should cover shoulders and knees. Alcohol is only served at resorts.
Sri Lanka asks more awareness. The biggest everyday risk is road traffic, with buses overtaking on blind bends, which is a strong argument for a professional driver. Ocean currents are strong on many southern and western beaches, especially in the monsoon months, so swim where locals do and respect red flags. Dengue is present year round, so use repellent at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices. Stay clear of any demonstrations, mainly in Colombo.
At temples, remove shoes and hats, cover shoulders and knees and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue. Cover any Buddha tattoos. On poya days, the monthly full moon holidays, alcohol sales are banned, so plan celebration dinners around them.
How to Put Them Together
If you have twelve to fifteen nights, combining them is the best answer to this question. Colombo to Malé is a flight of roughly 90 minutes, with several departures a day on SriLankan Airlines and other carriers.
A classic plan looks like this. Land in Colombo and rest near the airport. Drive to Sigiriya for the rock and Dambulla, then to Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth. Take the train into the hills for a tea estate night or Ella. Descend to the south coast for a safari in Udawalawe or Yala, a few beach days near Mirissa and a last afternoon in Galle Fort. Then fly to Malé for four or five nights at a resort.
Put the Maldives last. After ten days of temples, trains and safaris, you will be ready to stop packing and float.
