Why Honeymoon in Raa Atoll
The appeal of Raa is choice without crowds. Over the past decade, the atoll has gone from a handful of resorts to one of the busiest building zones in the country. For honeymooners, that means modern villas with private pools, new spas and restaurants plus competitive opening rates.
It also means variety. JOALI Maldives is art-filled and polished. Its sister JOALI Being is a dedicated wellbeing island. Alila Kothaifaru and Cora Cora have contemporary pool villas with long sunset views. You & Me Maldives is a kid-free resort designed for couples, with an underwater restaurant.
Despite the growth, Raa still feels spacious. Resorts sit far apart, lagoons are wide and many villas face open water. The flight is short enough that you can reach your island on the day you land in Malé if your international flight arrives in daylight.
When to Go
Raa follows the central Maldives pattern. December to April is the dry northeast monsoon season, with the most sunshine, calm seas and good visibility. It is also peak season, with the highest rates around Christmas, New Year and Easter.
May and October to November are shoulder months, with mixed weather and better value. From June to September, the southwest monsoon brings more wind, waves and showers, often in short, heavy bursts rather than all-day rain. Rates are at their lowest.
The wetter months are also the manta season in the northern atolls. Resorts near the Baa border run trips to Hanifaru Bay, which usually sees its biggest feeding aggregations from around June to November. If you are open to a few showers, a July to October trip can combine lower prices with a strong chance of swimming with mantas.
Where to Stay
Raa's resorts are spread across the atoll and each has a distinct personality.
JOALI Maldives on Muravandhoo island is a top-tier, art-focused resort with pool villas, an ESPA spa and polished service. JOALI Being, a short trip away, is built entirely around wellbeing, with programs for sleep, movement and mindfulness.
InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau has spacious pool villas and is one of the closer resorts to Hanifaru Bay. Alila Kothaifaru offers clean modern design and a strong house reef. Cora Cora Maldives is a lively, all-inclusive option with pool villas, some with slides.
For couples wanting a kid-free resort, You & Me Maldives is designed around couples, with an underwater restaurant. Heritance Aarah is a large all-inclusive with pool villas. Ifuru Island is close to Ifuru Airport (IFU), which makes it quick to reach by domestic flight.

Romantic Things to Do
Snorkel with mantas. In season, resorts near the Baa border arrange guided trips to Hanifaru Bay, where large numbers of manta rays can gather to feed on plankton. Scuba diving is not allowed in the bay itself, so these are snorkel trips.
For divers, Vandhoo Thila is a highlight, an underwater pinnacle covered in soft corals with schools of fish and occasional sharks and eagle rays.
Book a private sandbank picnic or a sunset dhoni cruise to look for spinner dolphins. Many resorts offer dinner on the beach or in a private pavilion over the lagoon.
Eat at an underwater restaurant. Several Raa resorts have dining rooms below the surface, with reef fish swimming past the glass.
On calm nights, some lagoons glow with bioluminescent plankton. It is unpredictable, but staff often know when it is likely.
Getting There and Around
There are no nonstop flights from the US to the Maldives. Most couples connect through a Gulf hub such as Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, or through Istanbul or Europe, to Velana International Airport (MLE) near Malé.
From Malé, most Raa resorts use a seaplane transfer of about 40 to 45 minutes over the atolls. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so check your international arrival time. Late arrivals may need a night near Malé first.
Some resorts are reached via a domestic flight to Ifuru Airport (IFU) in Raa, followed by a short speedboat ride. Domestic flights can operate after dark, which can help with late connections.
Transfers are arranged by your resort and are usually charged per person on top of the room rate. Once on your island, everything is within walking or bicycling distance.
Food and Drink
Dining in Raa ranges from relaxed all-inclusive buffets to tasting menus. Larger resorts often have five or more restaurants, including Japanese, Italian, grill and Maldivian-inspired menus.
Try mas huni, a Maldivian breakfast of shredded tuna, coconut and onion with flatbread. Garudhiya, a clear fish broth, is the other classic. Some resorts offer cooking classes or Maldivian dinner evenings.
Underwater and overwater restaurants are a special-occasion highlight. Book ahead, as tables are limited.
Meal plans matter a lot in the Maldives, since all food and drink is resort-priced. All-inclusive packages often make sense for couples who like wine with dinner and a cocktail at sunset. Check what they include, as some exclude premium dining, spa or excursions.
Honeymoon Tips
- Tell your resort you are on your honeymoon when you book. Many offer extras such as a sunset cruise or spa credit.
- Ask about manta trip timing and whether the resort runs to Hanifaru Bay.
- Check seaplane timing against your flight. A night in Malé or near the airport can save stress.
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard for long snorkels.
- Prices are high and approximate: pool villas at top Raa resorts often run $1,000 to $3,000 or more a night in peak season, with transfers extra.
- Consider splitting your stay between two villa types, such as beach and overwater.
