At a glance

An Andaman Sea island hop that moves only by boat: three nights on the car-free Railay peninsula in Krabi, three on a quiet northern beach of Koh Phi Phi, then four on Koh Lipe near the Malaysian border. It suits couples who want beaches, snorkeling and a sense of journey without long drives. Go from December to April, when the seas are calm and the island boats run.

Thailand's Andaman coast is the easiest place in Asia to island hop on a honeymoon. In high season, boats link the main islands and the distances are short, so you travel by sea from one beach to the next instead of driving.

This route starts at Railay in Krabi, a peninsula sealed off by limestone cliffs and reachable only by water. It is the dramatic opening: climbers on the rock faces, sunsets that turn the cliffs pink and a beach cave you can dine in.

Next comes Koh Phi Phi. The trick here is to skip the party village of Tonsai and stay on a northern beach such as Laem Tong, then slip over to Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon early, before the day boats arrive.

The last four nights are on Koh Lipe, a small island near the Malaysian border surrounded by the forested, undeveloped islands of Tarutao National Marine Park. Lipe is your slow stretch: coral off the beach, barefoot restaurants and no plans at all.

Day by day

Days 1–3: Railay, Krabi

Fly into Krabi International Airport (KBV), about an hour and twenty minutes from Bangkok. A car takes you to the coast, then a boat carries you to Railay, often with a wade through shallow water. Rayavadee runs private car and speedboat transfers. Pack soft bags.

On day 2, wake early and walk to Phra Nang Beach before anyone else is there, with the limestone towers rising straight out of the sand. Kayak around the cliffs or through the mangroves later in the morning. Rest through the midday heat.

On day 3, take a long-tail to the Hong Islands to swim in a lagoon enclosed by cliffs, or try a beginner rock climbing session together on Railay's walls. In the evening, book dinner at the restaurant inside a limestone cave on Phranang Beach. Sitting under the rock with the sea at your feet is the romantic moment of Krabi and a fine splurge night.

Days 4–6: Koh Phi Phi

On day 4, take the high-season boat from Railay to Phi Phi, roughly one and a half to two hours. Boats land at Tonsai pier, where your resort's boat collects you for the ride north to Laem Tong or east to Loh Bagao. Arrange this pickup in advance.

On day 5, hire a private long-tail at dawn for Phi Phi Leh. You reach Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon, with its green water between cliff walls, while the tour boats are still at the pier. That empty lagoon at first light is the romantic moment of Phi Phi. Maya Bay can close for reef recovery, so check before you go.

Spend the afternoon on your beach. On day 6, snorkel at Bamboo Island or dive with blacktip reef sharks at Shark Point. Hike to the island viewpoint for sunset if you want the classic view of the twin bays. Take your resort boat back from Tonsai after dinner.

Days 7–10: Koh Lipe

Day 7 is a travel day. High-season speedboats run south from Phi Phi to Koh Lipe, usually stopping at Koh Lanta and taking roughly four to five hours. Bring snacks, seasickness tablets and a dry bag. Boats land on Pattaya Beach.

On day 8, sleep in, then snorkel the reef in front of Sunrise Beach. You can walk across the island in about 20 minutes, so evenings are easy: grilled seafood on Walking Street, then drinks on Sunset Beach.

On day 9, hire a private long-tail for the reefs between Koh Adang and Koh Rawi and an empty sandbar for lunch. Floating over the coral with Adang's forest rising behind you is the romantic moment of Lipe. If you are both keen, hike the Koh Adang viewpoint early before the heat.

Keep day 10 free. Watch sunrise from Sunrise Beach, book a massage under a beach shelter and spend the afternoon in the water. This is the slow stretch the whole trip has been heading toward.

Day 11: Home via Hat Yai

Take a morning speedboat from Koh Lipe to Pak Bara Pier, about 90 minutes, then a car of about two hours to Hat Yai International Airport (HDY). From there, fly to Bangkok in about an hour and a half and connect home. Leave a generous gap before your international flight, since boats can run late.

There are no nonstop flights from the US to Thailand. Most couples connect through Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore or a Gulf hub. A final night in Bangkok breaks the trip and gives you a buffer if the sea is rough.

If your onward connection is tight, book a private transfer from Pak Bara rather than a shared minivan. Keep passports and medicine in a waterproof pouch on every boat day.

Getting Between Stops

This route depends on boats, which run fully only in high season, roughly November to April. Railay to Phi Phi takes about one and a half to two hours. Phi Phi to Koh Lipe takes roughly four to five hours by speedboat, usually via Koh Lanta. Book these legs a few days ahead through your hotels or a reputable operator.

Landing on Railay and some Phi Phi beaches can mean wading through shallow water, so pack light in soft bags and keep electronics in a dry bag.

On the islands there are no cars to speak of. You walk on sandy paths or hire a long-tail, agreeing on the price before you board. Life jackets should be on board every boat; ask for them if you do not see them.

Where to Stay

On Railay, Rayavadee is the place to splurge. Its pavilions sit among coconut groves at the tip of the peninsula, between Railay West, Nam Mao and Phranang beaches. Its Pool Pavilions have private walled gardens. Mid-range resorts line Railay West and East if you want to spend less.

On Koh Phi Phi, location matters most. Avoid Tonsai and Loh Dalum, which are loud late into the night. Zeavola, at Laem Tong in the north, has teak suites set back from a soft beach and a long reputation with honeymooners. Loh Bagao on the east coast has larger villa resorts.

On Koh Lipe, choose by beach. Sunrise Beach has the best snorkeling and views of Koh Adang, Pattaya Beach has the most restaurants and Sunset Beach is the quietest. Most hotels here are mid-range, so read recent reviews.

When to Go

December to April is the window for this route. The northeast monsoon brings dry weather and calm seas to the Andaman coast and the full boat network runs. January to March is the most settled stretch, with clear water for snorkeling. Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year are the busiest and most expensive weeks. Koh Lipe has limited rooms, so book early for those dates.

November is a shoulder month as the boats start up. From about May to October, the southwest monsoon makes crossings rough, schedules shrink to a single daily boat to Lipe and many Lipe resorts close.

If your dates fall in summer, swap this route for the Gulf of Thailand islands, such as Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, which have their best weather then.

Budget and Booking

Plan on roughly $600–1,000 a night for two at Rayavadee, about $250–500 for a good resort on a quiet Phi Phi beach and $100–300 for a pleasant hotel on Koh Lipe. Prices peak from Christmas to February. All figures are approximate.

Book Rayavadee and your Phi Phi resort first, then Koh Lipe, which has the fewest good rooms. Ask each hotel how transfers work and whether they can book the next boat for you.

Other costs include private long-tail hire, snorkel and dive trips, national park charges on Phi Phi Leh and around Koh Adang, massages and the domestic flights at each end. A private long-tail at dawn costs more than a shared tour but buys you the quiet that makes these islands special.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For eight days, skip Koh Lipe. Spend three nights on Railay and four on Phi Phi, then take the ferry back to Krabi or Phuket for your flight.

With two weeks, add three nights on Koh Lanta between Phi Phi and Lipe. It has long, quiet beaches and a relaxed old town. It also breaks the longest boat ride in two.

Another option is to add Langkawi in Malaysia at the end. Boats run from Koh Lipe to Langkawi in high season. Langkawi has resorts such as The Datai Langkawi on a rainforest bay plus easy flights to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. A night or two in Bangkok at the start, for temples and canal boats, also fits well.

Honeymoon Tips

Pack reef shoes, a rash guard and reef-safe sunscreen. Do not stand on coral or touch marine life. Listen to your boat crew about currents. Box jellyfish are a risk in Thai waters at some times of year, so ask locally and swim where vinegar stations are posted.

On long-tails, sit low and hold on to the sides, since swells can be choppy. Avoid boat trips after a drink.

At temples on the mainland, both of you need covered shoulders and knees. On the islands, cover up away from the beach.

Dengue occurs in southern Thailand. Use repellent at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before booking. Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book.

FAQ

Planning this trip

Can we really island hop from Krabi to Koh Lipe by boat?

Yes, in high season. Boats run from Railay to Phi Phi in about one and a half to two hours, then from Phi Phi to Koh Lipe in roughly four to five hours, usually via Koh Lanta. These links run reliably from about November to April. Outside that window, many are suspended.

Is Koh Phi Phi too crowded for a honeymoon?

Tonsai village is. The answer is to stay on a northern or eastern beach such as Laem Tong or Loh Bagao, reached by resort boat. Then visit Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon at dawn on a private long-tail. With that plan, Phi Phi feels like a different island.

Why finish on Koh Lipe?

Lipe is the slowest stop and the best one for doing nothing. You can snorkel straight from Sunrise Beach, walk everywhere and spend whole days in the water. Ending there gives the trip a calm finish before the boat, drive and flight home through Hat Yai.

Where should we splurge on this route?

At Rayavadee on Railay. It is the most luxurious stay on the route, with pavilions among palms between three beaches and a restaurant set inside a limestone cave on Phranang Beach. Koh Lipe has few true luxury hotels, so put the money into a great room on Railay.

What is the best month for this Thai islands route?

January to March is the most reliable, with calm seas, sunshine and the full boat network running. December and April work well too. Avoid May to October for this route, since rough seas can cancel boats and many Koh Lipe resorts close for the season.
