At a glance

Three nights in Amed on Bali's quiet east coast for snorkeling over coral and a shipwreck, four nights on car-free Gili Meno with turtles off the beach, then three nights on Lombok's southern bays. A fast boat and a short drive link the stops. It suits water lovers who want beaches without Bali's traffic. Go from May to September, when seas are calmest for the crossing.

This is an Indonesia honeymoon for couples who would rather be in the water than in traffic. It starts on Bali's east coast, crosses by boat to the Gili Islands and ends on Lombok, Bali's quieter neighbor.

Amed comes first, a string of fishing villages and black-sand bays below Mount Agung. Coral gardens and a Japanese shipwreck sit a few strokes from shore. It is a gentle place to recover from the long flight, with villas above the water and sunrise over the sea.

From Amed, a fast boat takes you to Gili Meno, the quietest of the three Gili Islands. There are no cars, just bicycles and horse carts. Green turtles graze off the beach and evenings end with dinner on the sand.

The last stop is southern Lombok, a coast of empty horseshoe bays with Mount Rinjani on the skyline. You can learn to surf at Selong Belanak, watch sunset from a ridge above Tanjung Aan and fly home from Lombok International Airport, about 30 minutes away.

Day by day

Days 1–3: Amed

Land at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) after a connection in Asia or the Gulf. Amed is about two and a half to three hours by car along the east coast. Most resorts arrange a private transfer. Stopping at Tirta Gangga or Sidemen breaks the drive nicely if you arrive in daylight.

On day 2, snorkel the coral gardens of Jemeluk Bay in the morning, when the water is calm. In the afternoon, swim out over the Japanese shipwreck near Lipah. If you want to try something new together, book a beginner freediving or dive session.

Day 3 starts before dawn. Sit on the beach as the jukung fishing boats return at sunrise, their sails bright against the sea with Agung behind. That quiet hour is the romantic moment of Amed. Divers can head to Tulamben for the USAT Liberty wreck. Everyone else can nap, read and book a massage. The coastal road is narrow and hilly, so use a car with a driver at night.

Days 4–7: Gili Meno

Take a fast boat from Amed to the Gili Islands on the morning of day 4. Crossings take roughly one and a half to two and a half hours depending on conditions. Seas are calmest early, so book the first departure with an established operator that carries life jackets. Expect a wet landing on the beach.

Gili Meno has no motorized vehicles. A cidomo, the local horse cart, or your resort's staff will move your bags. Spend the afternoon in the water.

On day 5, snorkel with green turtles off Meno's beaches. Day 6 is your splurge: book a private pool villa at BASK Gili Meno or a candlelit dinner on the sand. On day 7, cycle the sandy loop around Gili Air or take the public boat to Gili Trawangan for a sunset drink on its quieter west coast.

Watching the sun set behind Mount Agung across the water, with Bali glowing on the horizon, is the romantic moment of the Gilis. Never try to swim between islands, as currents are strong.

Days 8–10: Southern Lombok

On day 8, take a boat of 15 to 45 minutes from Meno to Bangsal or Teluk Nare on Lombok, then drive about two to two and a half hours south to Kuta Lombok or Selong Belanak. Book a private car in advance so it is waiting at the harbor.

On day 9, take a beginner surf lesson together at Selong Belanak, a gentle bay with soft sand. If one of you would rather not surf, lie on the beach with a book. Eat ayam taliwang, Lombok's spicy grilled chicken, with fiery plecing kangkung for lunch.

On day 10, explore the bays at Mawun and Tanjung Aan. In the late afternoon, climb Bukit Merese, a grassy ridge above Tanjung Aan. Sitting on the hill as the light turns gold over the curving bays below is the romantic moment of Lombok. Lombok is mostly Muslim, so both of you should cover shoulders and knees in villages and at mosques.

Day 11: Home from Lombok

Lombok International Airport (LOP) is about 30 minutes from Kuta Lombok. Some international connections land here directly, usually via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Otherwise, take a domestic flight of about 40 minutes to Bali and connect home from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS).

If you route through Bali, leave a generous gap between flights. A late-night departure from DPS can be paired with a day room near the airport for a shower and a nap before the long flight.

If your flight leaves in the afternoon, spend the morning on the beach at Selong Belanak or Tanjung Aan. Check the race calendar if you are staying near Mandalika, since event weekends at the circuit fill hotels and slow traffic on the road to the airport.

Getting Between Stops

The airport to Amed takes about two and a half to three hours by car. Fast boats run from Amed to the Gili Islands in good weather, taking roughly one and a half to two and a half hours. If seas are rough or departures are canceled, boats from Padang Bai, about an hour south of Amed, are the fallback.

Public boats link the three Gilis at set times and fill quickly. From Gili Meno to Lombok, take a public or private boat of 15 to 45 minutes to Bangsal or Teluk Nare, then a car of about two hours or more to the south coast.

On Lombok, hire a car with a driver for day trips. Roads between the southern bays are steep in places and only genuinely confident riders should rent scooters. A domestic flight from Lombok to Bali takes about 40 minutes.

Where to Stay

Amed is mostly small dive resorts, bungalows with sea views and villas with plunge pools. Selang and Aas, in the southeast, are quieter, with villas above the water and the best sunrise views. Jemeluk has the best-known snorkeling bay and more cafes.

On Gili Meno, BASK Gili Meno is a polished choice with pool villas. Meno's other stays are mostly small beach bungalows and boutique resorts, some with private plunge pools. Ask whether your hotel has fresh-water showers, as some cheaper places still use brackish water.

On Lombok, Kuta Lombok has cafes and small hotels within reach of the best bays. The Pullman Lombok Merujani Mandalika is a large international resort on a long beach. Selong Belanak has a few stylish boutique villas. The Oberoi Beach Resort Lombok, on the northwest coast near the Gili harbors, is a quiet luxury alternative.

When to Go

The dry season, roughly May to September, is the best time for this route. Skies are clear, humidity is lower and seas are generally calmer for the boat crossings. East Bali and the Gilis are drier than mainland Bali. Southern Lombok is the driest part of its island. July and August are the busiest months, with higher prices.

April and October are good shoulder months, with greener hills and quieter beaches.

The wet season, about November to March, brings heavy afternoon storms. Fast boats from Bali are sometimes canceled in bad weather and the crossing can be rough. January and February are the wettest months. Ramadan dates shift each year. Daytime life on the Gilis and Lombok slows a little, but tourist services carry on.

Budget and Booking

Plan on roughly $100–450 a night for two. Comfortable villas in Amed cost very roughly $60–200. Gili Meno ranges from simple bungalows to pool villas at BASK. Good boutique villas on Lombok run about $100–300, with top resorts higher. All figures are approximate.

Book your Gili Meno stay first in July and August, when the best rooms sell out. Book fast boats a few days ahead with an established operator and keep your plans flexible in case of weather.

Other costs include the airport transfer to Amed, the fast boat, the boat and car to southern Lombok, snorkel trips, a surf lesson and the domestic flight to Bali if you need one. Food is inexpensive on all three stops.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For a week, skip Lombok and spend three nights in Amed and four on Gili Meno, then take a fast boat back to Bali for your flight home.

With two weeks, add three nights in Sidemen at the start. It is about an hour from Amed, with rice terraces, weaving villages and sunrise views of Mount Agung. Or end with three nights in Seminyak for a pool villa and Bali's best restaurants before flying home from DPS.

Couples who want something wilder can add Komodo. Fly from Bali to Labuan Bajo (LBJ) in about an hour, hike Padar Island at sunrise and snorkel with manta rays. It pairs well with the Gilis as a second water-focused stop.

Honeymoon Tips

Book early boat departures, when seas are calmest. Pack light and wear sandals for wet landings. Take seasickness medication if either of you needs it.

Jellyfish sometimes drift into the Gilis, so a thin rash guard helps. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and do not stand on coral.

The Gilis are relaxed but conservative compared with Bali. Cover up away from the beach. On Lombok, dress modestly in villages for both of you.

Dengue is present in Indonesia. Use repellent at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Indonesia before booking. Drink bottled or filtered water. Keep cash for small boats and cidomo rides.

FAQ

Planning this trip

Which Gili island is best for a honeymoon?

Gili Meno is the quietest, with calm evenings, turtles off the beach and boutique stays such as BASK Gili Meno. Gili Air balances peace with more cafes and restaurants. Gili Trawangan has the most nightlife. For most honeymooners, Meno is the pick, with an evening trip to Air or Trawangan if you want company.

Is the fast boat from Bali to the Gilis safe?

It is generally fine with an established operator that carries life jackets and respects weather warnings. Seas are calmest in the morning and in the dry season. Avoid the cheapest boats, check reviews and be ready to change plans if a crossing is canceled. Seasickness tablets help on rougher days.

Why start in Amed instead of near the airport?

Amed is the closest Bali port to the Gilis that offers a gentle, scenic stay. Starting here means a quiet first few days with snorkeling off the beach and a short boat ride onward. It avoids doubling back to the busy south of Bali.

Can we fly home from Lombok?

Yes. Lombok International Airport (LOP) has some international connections, usually via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. You can also take a domestic flight of about 40 minutes to Bali and connect home from there. Leave a generous gap between flights if you change airlines.

Is Lombok good for couples who do not surf?

Yes. The southern bays are lovely for swimming and lying on the sand. The sunset from Bukit Merese is worth the short climb. Lombok also has waterfalls such as Tiu Kelep near Senaru and snorkeling around the islets off Sekotong. Surf lessons are optional.
