The short answer

Brazil's best honeymoon beach island, if the budget stretches. Noronha is a protected volcanic archipelago with clear water, cliff-framed beaches like Baía do Sancho and spinner dolphins in the bay at dawn. Go August through January for dry skies and the best snorkeling. Top pousadas run roughly $400 to $1,200 or more a night, plus a daily environmental fee and a park pass. Plan four to six nights and book early. Don't miss snorkeling Sancho with the turtles.

Best for
  • Couples who love snorkeling from shore
  • Fans of small, stylish pousadas
  • A remote island without big resorts
Maybe skip it if
  • You want a big all-inclusive resort
  • Your budget is tight

Fernando de Noronha sits in the Atlantic about 220 miles off Brazil's northeast tip, a cluster of volcanic islands where most of the land and sea is a national marine park. The main island is small enough to cross in twenty minutes. It has one paved road, a handful of villages and no big hotels.

What it does have is water clearer than anywhere else on the Brazilian coast, beaches framed by dark cliffs and a resident pod of spinner dolphins. Sea turtles graze in shallow bays. Reef sharks cruise past snorkelers without much interest.

Noronha is the splurge island of Brazil. It knows it. Every visitor pays a daily environmental fee plus a park pass, lodging is limited and prices run high. For honeymooners who want a beach trip that feels remote and still has good food and stylish pousadas, it is the best choice in the country. Plan four to six nights and book well ahead.

Why Honeymoon in Fernando de Noronha

Noronha delivers the wild island many couples imagine and rarely find. Development is tightly controlled, so there are no high-rises, cruise crowds or jet skis. Beaches like Sancho and Leão regularly top Brazilian rankings. The snorkeling from shore is excellent.

The scale suits two people. You rent a buggy, pick a beach for the morning, eat grilled fish for lunch and catch sunset at a different spot every evening. Days blend into one another in a way that feels earned after wedding planning. Evenings are low-key, with dinner at a pousada restaurant and a sky full of stars.

When to Go

August through January is the dry season and the best time for a honeymoon. Skies are mostly clear, the sea is calm on the sheltered northwest side and visibility for snorkeling and diving is at its best around September and October.

From about March to July the island gets most of its rain. Showers are often short and the landscape turns green, but some days are gray and the water clouds up. Rates can be lower.

December to March brings swells to the beaches facing Brazil, which delights surfers and closes some swimming spots. Holidays at Christmas, New Year and Carnival fill the island fast.

Where to Stay

Lodging on Noronha means pousadas, small inns that range from simple family guesthouses to polished retreats. Most sit on the main island near Vila dos Remédios, Boldró or Sueste. There is no beachfront resort strip.

Pousada Maravilha, above Sueste bay, has bungalows with private hot tubs and one of the island's best-known views. Pousada Teju-Açu is a quieter, eco-minded choice with wooden bungalows among the trees. Both are expensive, which is normal here. At the top pousadas, expect roughly $400 to $1,200 or more a night for two in high season.

Book as early as you can. The island has a limited number of beds, so the best rooms for peak months often go many months in advance.

Romantic Things to Do

Climb down to Baía do Sancho through a narrow crack in the cliff on fixed ladders, then swim along the reef with turtles. Arrive early to have the sand nearly to yourselves.

At dawn, walk to the Baía dos Golfinhos lookout to watch spinner dolphins return to the bay after a night of feeding. Rangers on site explain what you are seeing.

Book a slot at Atalaia, a tide pool with strict daily limits where reef fish swim around your ankles. Take a boat trip around the island, try a beginner dive and end the day with sunset at Forte dos Remédios or Boldró beach.

Getting There and Around

Flights to Fernando de Noronha Airport (FEN) leave from Recife and Natal on the mainland, operated by Brazilian carriers. Plan to connect in São Paulo or another hub from the US and to overnight in Recife if your connection is tight.

Every visitor pays a daily environmental preservation fee for each day of the stay, which adds up quickly on a long trip. Check the current rate before you go. The national marine park pass is separate and covers multiple days. Buy it at the park center early in your trip.

On the island, rent a buggy, use the island bus that runs along the single main road or hire a driver. Distances are short.

Food and Drink

Seafood is the obvious choice. The island cooks it well. Look for grilled fish of the day, shrimp moqueca and tuna caught nearby. Restaurants cluster around Vila dos Remédios, with others inside the better pousadas.

The Zé Maria pousada hosts a long-running food festival dinner several nights a week, a big buffet of seafood and Brazilian dishes that many visitors book as a celebratory meal. Reserve ahead.

Prices are higher than on the mainland because almost everything arrives by plane or boat. Lunch at a beach kiosk with a cold coconut is the cheapest good meal on the island.

Honeymoon Tips

Budget generously. Between the daily fee, the park pass, buggy rental and pousada rates, Noronha costs far more per day than mainland Brazil.

Pack reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes for rocky entries and a light rain jacket even in the dry season. Bring a good mask if you have one.

Some of the best experiences, like the Atalaia tide pool and certain trails, require booking through the park system on arrival with limited daily spaces, so do that on your first afternoon. Cash machines are few, but cards work almost everywhere. Mosquito repellent helps at dusk.

FAQ

Fernando de Noronha honeymoon FAQ

How much does it cost to visit Fernando de Noronha?

Expect Noronha to be one of the priciest parts of Brazil. On top of flights and lodging, each visitor pays a daily environmental preservation fee, which adds up over a long stay, plus a separate national park pass. Pousadas, buggies and restaurants are all priced above the mainland. Budget accordingly and plan four to six nights.

How do we fly to Fernando de Noronha from the US?

There are no international flights. Fly to São Paulo or another Brazilian hub, then connect to Recife or Natal for the short hop to the island. Schedules vary by season. Many couples spend a night in Recife on the way out to avoid a missed connection, especially after an overnight flight from the US.

Is Fernando de Noronha good for snorkeling?

It is the best snorkeling in Brazil. Visibility is often excellent from August to January. You can see turtles, rays, reef fish and small sharks from shore at Sancho, Sueste and Atalaia. Some sites restrict fins or sunscreen to protect the reef. A short boat trip or dive opens up even more.

How many days should we spend on Noronha?

Four nights is the minimum to see the main beaches, book Atalaia and have a lazy day. Five or six lets you slow down and absorb weather changes. Because the fee is charged per day and flights are expensive, longer stays add cost, so many couples pair Noronha with a cheaper mainland beach.

Can we combine Noronha with other parts of Brazil?

Yes. Recife and Natal are the gateways, so it pairs naturally with the northeast coast. São Miguel dos Milagres is a few hours' drive from Recife, while Rio or São Paulo connect easily on the way home. A common route is Rio for city energy, then Noronha, then a quiet mainland pousada.
