  • You need elephants on your safari
  • Your budget is moderate

Tswalu Kalahari Reserve is South Africa's largest private game reserve and one of the most exclusive safari experiences on the continent. It covers more than 400 square miles of red dunes, golden grassland and the Korannaberg mountains in the Northern Cape, on the southern edge of the Kalahari. The Oppenheimer family owns and runs it as a conservation project first and a lodge second.

For honeymooners, Tswalu's appeal is space and privacy. Every booking comes with a private vehicle, guide and tracker, so your days follow your interests. Few guests share the reserve and there is no sense of crowding at sightings.

Wildlife is different here. Instead of chasing the Big Five, you might sit with a family of habituated meerkats, follow a pangolin at dusk or watch black-maned lions in the dunes. The reserve is malaria-free and the light, silence and night skies are hard to beat. It is expensive, but couples who choose it rarely regret the splurge.

Why Honeymoon at Tswalu

Privacy comes first. A private vehicle, guide and tracker are guaranteed with every booking, which means no fixed schedule and no sharing with strangers. You can stay at a sighting as long as you like or spend a morning on horseback.

The second reason is the landscape. The Kalahari feels open and timeless, with red dunes, camelthorn trees and wide skies. Sunsets are long and the stars at night are brilliant.

The third reason is the wildlife. Tswalu is home to four of the Big Five, all but elephant, as well as cheetahs, wild dogs, black rhinos, aardvarks and pangolins. It has a strong focus on research and conservation. Meerkat encounters are a highlight for many couples.

Finally, it is malaria-free, a comfort for couples planning a family.

When to Go

Tswalu is open year-round and each season has a different feel.

Autumn, March through May, brings mild days, cool nights and green landscapes after the summer rains. It is one of the most comfortable times to visit.

Winter, June through August, is dry with clear blue skies. Days are pleasant but early mornings and evenings are cold, often near or below freezing. Animals are easier to see in thinner vegetation. Sleep-outs under the stars are dramatic though chilly.

Spring, September and October, warms up quickly with good game viewing.

Summer, November through February, is hot, with dramatic thunderstorms and green grass. Tall grass can make small, elusive animals harder to spot, but the scenery is lush and the light is beautiful. Rates and availability vary by season.

Where to Stay

Tswalu has a small number of camps, each with its own character.

  • Loapi: six private villa-style homes spread along a valley, each with a private plunge pool and its own staff. Ideal for honeymooners who want complete privacy, with one-bedroom homes for couples.
  • Motse: the main lodge in the west of the reserve, with nine legae, or suites, a shared pool and a lively waterhole in front of camp. A good choice for couples who enjoy some social atmosphere.
  • Tarkuni: an exclusive-use homestead for up to ten guests, better suited to families or groups.

Rates are among the highest in South Africa. Expect several thousand US dollars per couple per night, approximately, including meals, drinks, activities and the private vehicle. The lodge recommends a stay of at least four nights to make the most of the reserve.

Romantic Things to Do

Join a meerkat family at sunrise. The habituated colonies at Tswalu allow you to sit close as they emerge, stretch and stand sentry.

Spend a night at Malori, a star bed sleep-out on a raised platform with views over the Kalahari. Bring warm clothes in winter and enjoy the silence.

Track black rhino on foot with your guide, or follow wild dogs at speed in the vehicle. Ride horses through the dunes for a different perspective on the landscape.

Book a dinner at Boscia House, the home of Klein JAN, the restaurant led by chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. The experience showcases ingredients and stories from the Kalahari.

Schedule a massage in your suite during the midday break.

Getting There and Around

From the US, fly to Johannesburg (JNB) on a nonstop from Atlanta or the New York area. Tswalu operates scheduled charter flights to its own airstrip from Johannesburg's OR Tambo in about 90 minutes and from Cape Town International in about two hours.

Private charters are also available. Scheduled connections link Tswalu with other safari areas, such as the Sabi Sand and Madikwe, on the same day, which makes it easy to combine reserves.

Once you arrive, everything is arranged. Your private vehicle and guide will take you on drives, walks and sleep-outs. There is no need to drive yourselves.

Pack light, as charter flights have strict luggage limits, usually soft bags only. Check with Tswalu for the current allowance.

Food and Drink

Meals at Tswalu are generous and thoughtful. Breakfasts after morning drives are hearty, lunches are light and dinners are served in the camp or under the stars.

Menus emphasize seasonal produce, much of it grown on the reserve or sourced locally. Expect Kalahari game, lamb, slow-cooked dishes and plenty of vegetables, often paired with South African wines.

Klein JAN, at Boscia House, offers a separate dining experience created by chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. It celebrates Northern Cape ingredients and traditions with an inventive tasting menu. Ask your host to book it; a complimentary dinner is arranged for guests staying two nights or more.

Drinks, including wines and spirits, are included in most rates, though some premium bottles may cost extra.

Honeymoon Tips

Plan at least four nights. Tswalu is vast and the private vehicle means you can explore at your own pace. Shorter stays feel rushed.

Pack layers for winter. Morning drives can be bitterly cold, though vehicles usually carry blankets. In summer, bring sun protection and light clothing.

Tell Tswalu you are on honeymoon so they can arrange special touches, such as a private dinner or sleep-out.

Tswalu welcomes children, so ask about the camps and timings if you prefer a quieter atmosphere. Loapi offers the most privacy.

The US State Department rates South Africa at Level 2, mainly for crime in cities. Tswalu is remote and safe. Combine it with Cape Town or the Sabi Sand for a varied honeymoon.
