Why Honeymoon on the Panorama Route
It adds scenery and variety to a safari trip without another flight. Lodges near Kruger are often a short drive from the escarpment, so it slots in easily before or after game drives.
The viewpoints are dramatic. At God's Window, the cliffs plunge more than 2,000 feet to the Lowveld. On clear days you can see far toward Kruger. The Three Rondavels sit across the canyon from a lookout that glows at sunrise.
The pace is gentle. Days are spent driving short distances between viewpoints, waterfalls and cafés, with time for walks, swims and long lunches. Nights are cooler than in the bush and quieter than in the cities.
It also offers value. Guesthouses and lodges on the escarpment cost far less than safari lodges.
When to Go
The dry winter months from April to September are the best time for clear views. Skies are usually blue, mornings are crisp and the air is clean, though nights can be cold. This is also the best season for game viewing in nearby Kruger.
Summer, from October to March, brings heat in the Lowveld and frequent mist and afternoon thunderstorms on the escarpment. Mist can hide viewpoints entirely, sometimes for hours. The upside is lush forests and waterfalls in full flow. Visit viewpoints early in the day for the best chance of clear skies.
South African school holidays and long weekends bring crowds to the main lookouts. Visit God's Window and the Three Rondavels early to avoid tour buses.
Where to Stay
The escarpment has a mix of guesthouses, country lodges and resorts.
- Graskop: a small town with guesthouses, cafés and easy access to God's Window and the waterfalls. Convenient for a one-night stop.
- Near the canyon: lodges and resorts along the R532 overlook the Blyde River Canyon, with views of the Three Rondavels and Blydepoort Dam.
- Hazyview and Sabie: country hotels in forests and farmland, closer to Kruger's southern gates.
- Pilgrim's Rest: historic cottages and an old hotel in a restored gold-rush village.
Approximate rates range from about US$80 a night for a good guesthouse to US$300 or more at upscale country lodges. Ask for a room with a canyon or forest view.
Romantic Things to Do
Drive the route slowly, stopping at God's Window, the Pinnacle and Wonder View for photos. Walk the bridges at Bourke's Luck Potholes, where swirling water has carved deep cylindrical holes in the rock where two rivers meet.
Watch the sunrise over the Three Rondavels, then take a boat cruise on Blydepoort Dam to see hippos, crocodiles and a waterfall dropping into the water.
Visit Lisbon, Berlin and Mac Mac Falls. Take the glass lift down into the Graskop Gorge for a forest walk, or try the Big Swing if one of you craves adrenaline.
Wander Pilgrim's Rest, a preserved gold-mining village from the late 1800s, then share a stack of savory and sweet pancakes in Graskop, a local tradition.
Getting There and Around
From the US, fly to Johannesburg (JNB) on a nonstop from Atlanta or the New York area. From there, fly to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP) near Mbombela or to Hoedspruit (HDS), or drive about 4 to 5 hours.
From MQP, Graskop is about 1.5 hours by car. From Hoedspruit, the northern end of the canyon is about an hour away.
A rental car is the best way to explore. Roads are mostly paved but some have potholes. Drive slowly on mountain bends, watch for trucks and avoid driving at night. Keep car doors locked and valuables hidden, as smash-and-grab theft occurs.
Combine the route with a safari in the Sabi Sand or another reserve near Kruger, using the escarpment as a one or two night stop.
Food and Drink
Graskop is known for pancakes, served savory with fillings such as bobotie or chicken and sweet with cinnamon sugar or syrup. Harrie's Pancakes is the best-known spot and a good stop on a drive.
Trout from mountain streams is a local specialty, often smoked or grilled. Look for it at country restaurants in Sabie and Dullstroom.
Farm stalls sell fresh fruit, especially avocados, bananas and macadamia nuts from the Lowveld farms below the escarpment.
Country lodges and guesthouses serve hearty breakfasts and dinners of South African classics. Many have good wine lists. Bring snacks and water for the drive, as some viewpoints have only small stalls. Tap water is generally safe in towns, but ask your host.
Honeymoon Tips
Start early. Mist often rolls in by late morning in summer. The first light gives the best views. Pack a warm layer for cold mornings.
Keep your camera handy but stay behind barriers at viewpoints. Cliff edges are sheer and some lookouts have minimal fencing.
The escarpment is malaria-free, but Kruger and the Lowveld below carry malaria risk, mainly in summer. Talk to a travel clinic and if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
The US State Department rates South Africa at Level 2, mainly for crime. Viewpoints can attract vendors and occasional petty theft, so lock the car and keep bags close.
Small admission charges apply at most viewpoints and falls. Carry some cash.
