Why Honeymoon in Bequia
Bequia is about pace. The ferry from St. Vincent marks the hours, the harbor rocks gently with sailboats and most evenings end with a long dinner within earshot of the water.
It rewards couples who like independence. You don't need a car or a resort program. Walk the Belmont Walkway past waterfront bars to Princess Margaret Beach, or wave down a water taxi to Lower Bay. Hike to a lookout over Admiralty Bay, then spend the evening at a small restaurant serving the day's catch.
Bequia is also a good launch pad. Day trips to Mustique, the Tobago Cays or a remote anchorage are easy to arrange from the harbor, so you can sample the wider Grenadines without changing hotels.
When to Go
The best months are December through May. Days are sunny and dry, temperatures sit in the low to mid 80s Fahrenheit and the trade winds keep things fresh. This is also prime sailing season, so the harbor is at its liveliest.
The Bequia Easter Regatta, held over the Easter weekend, brings races, parties and live music to Port Elizabeth. It is great fun, but rooms fill months ahead.
June and July are quieter and greener with occasional showers. August through October brings more rain and the peak of hurricane season. Bequia came through Hurricane Beryl in 2024 with less damage than islands farther south. Its hotels were fully open again by 2026. Some smaller places still close in September.
Where to Stay
Bequia's lodging is small and personal. Friendship Bay, on the south coast, is quieter and breezier than the harbor; Bequia Beach Hotel sits there with rooms and villas set along a sheltered beach.
On Admiralty Bay, Bequia Plantation Hotel has cottages in a palm-shaded garden steps from Princess Margaret Beach and the Belmont Walkway. Small boutique hotels such as The Liming add a few more stylish choices around the island.
Villas are popular here, from simple cottages to homes with pools and harbor views. Lower Bay is good if you want to roll out of bed onto the sand. Port Elizabeth itself works for couples who want restaurants on the doorstep. As a rough guide, good small hotels run about $200 to $500 a night in season, with the best suites costing more.
Romantic Things to Do
Start with the beaches. Princess Margaret Beach, a long curve of golden sand inside Admiralty Bay, is a short walk from town. Lower Bay, farther along, has a couple of beach bars and good swimming.
Visit the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary at Park Bay, where a local conservationist has raised hawksbill turtles for decades before releasing them. Hike up to the old Fort Hamilton gun battery for views across the harbor at sunset.
Take a day sail. Boats leave the harbor for Mustique, where you can walk Macaroni Beach and stop for a drink, or for the Tobago Cays and their turtle-filled lagoon. Snorkel or dive with a local operator such as Dive Bequia, which knows the reefs off the island well.
Getting There and Around
Most travelers fly to St. Vincent's Argyle airport, which has nonstops from New York JFK and Miami, then take a taxi to Kingstown and a ferry to Port Elizabeth. Conventional ferries take about an hour. A newer fast ferry makes the crossing in about 40 minutes.
You can also fly to Barbados and take a small plane directly to J.F. Mitchell Airport on Bequia, which avoids the ferry but costs more.
On the island, walking and water taxis cover most needs. Local minibuses run the main road for a few EC dollars. Taxis, often open pickups with benches, can be hired for an island tour. If you rent a car, you need a local temporary permit. Traffic keeps left.
Food and Drink
Bequia punches above its size for food. The Belmont Walkway is lined with bars and restaurants serving grilled fish, lobster in season and Creole curries. Frangipani, a harborside hotel and restaurant, is known for its Thursday evening jump-up with music.
Beach bars at Princess Margaret and Lower Bay make easy lunch spots, with fish sandwiches and rum punch under the trees. Fresh bread, banana bread and coconut tarts come from small bakeries in Port Elizabeth.
Local favorites include callaloo soup, saltfish and bakes and roasted breadfruit, the national dish when paired with fried jackfish. Try a glass of Sunset rum, the national brand, carefully; the strong version is famously potent.
Honeymoon Tips
Book early for winter and Easter. Bequia's room count is small. Sailors and returning regulars fill the best places.
Carry cash in US or EC dollars for water taxis, beach bars and market stalls. Cards work at hotels and larger restaurants, but not everywhere.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, a light rain jacket and comfortable sandals for the walkway's uneven stretches.
If you plan a day sail, choose a calm day and confirm what is included: lunch, snorkel gear and marine park fees. For Mustique trips, check whether landing is permitted and whether there is a fee.
Leave a buffer day before your international flight, since ferries and small planes can be delayed by weather.
