Why Honeymoon in Canouan
Canouan suits couples who want a full-service resort in a setting that feels remote. You get polished service, a spa and suites a few steps from the water, but the island around you is quiet, with no cruise ships and very little traffic.
The water is the other draw. The barrier reef along the eastern side creates a calm, turquoise lagoon that is easy to snorkel and paddle. The Tobago Cays and Mayreau are close enough for a half-day or full-day boat trip.
Canouan's airport is also unusually capable for its size. It handles regional jets and private aircraft, so connections from Barbados or St. Vincent are straightforward. That means less time in transit and more time on the beach.
When to Go
The best time to visit is December through May. Days are dry and sunny, the trade winds are steady and the sea in the Tobago Cays is usually at its clearest. Holiday weeks are busiest. The resort can book out well ahead.
June and July bring warmer water and occasional showers, with more availability and sometimes better rates.
August through November is the wettest period and peak hurricane season. Beryl in July 2024 caused limited damage on Canouan, but the southern islands were hit hard. If you book in late summer, choose flexible rates and insurance that covers storms. Some boat operators also reduce schedules in the quietest months.
Where to Stay
The main honeymoon choice is the Mandarin Oriental, Canouan, on Godahl Beach. It has 26 beachfront suites with views across the reef lagoon, plus a spa, pools and several restaurants. Rates commonly run well into four figures a night in high season (approximate). The hillside golf course has only partly reopened since Beryl, so ask before packing clubs; the views from up there are worth the drive anyway.
The estate in the north also includes private villas, some rented through the resort, which can work for couples wanting more space and a private pool.
A few small guesthouses near Charlestown offer simpler, cheaper rooms. They suit couples on a tighter budget or sailors coming ashore, though you will spend more time arranging transport to the best beaches.
Romantic Things to Do
Spend at least one day in the Tobago Cays. Swim with green turtles off Baradal, snorkel Horseshoe Reef and walk the sand on Petit Bateau. Many trips include a beach barbecue of grilled lobster or fish, depending on the season.
Back on Canouan, snorkel or kayak in the lagoon off Godahl Beach. Hike up Mount Royal, the island's highest point, for views across the Grenadines toward Mayreau and Union.
Book a couples treatment at the spa, then take a sunset sail along the coast. Walk through Charlestown to see village life, the small church and the fishing boats in the bay.
On calm days, a boat to Mayreau's Saltwhistle Bay adds another beach, though check what has reopened there since Beryl.
Getting There and Around
Most couples fly to Barbados, which has nonstops from many US cities, then take a small plane or charter to Canouan in a little over an hour. Others fly to St. Vincent's Argyle airport, with nonstops from New York JFK and Miami, then hop south.
Canouan's runway can take regional jets and private aircraft, which makes it one of the easiest Grenadine islands to reach by private charter. The resort can arrange airport transfers and connecting flights.
On the island, the resort runs shuttles and taxis can be arranged. Distances are short. If you rent a car you will need a local temporary driving permit. Boat transfers to the Tobago Cays and other islands leave from Charlestown or from the resort's own dock.
Food and Drink
Most meals will be at the resort, which runs several restaurants with Caribbean, Italian and Asian influences. Expect fresh seafood, beach dining and an extensive wine list, all priced accordingly.
For a change, eat at a small local spot in Charlestown. You will find grilled fish, curried chicken and rice and peas at much lower prices, plus a glimpse of everyday island life.
On Tobago Cays trips, many boats or beach vendors offer a lobster barbecue on the sand, a highlight for many couples. Lobster has a closed season for part of the year, so ask what is available. A cold Hairoun, the local beer, or a rum punch makes a fine finish.
Honeymoon Tips
Book the Tobago Cays trip for your calmest, sunniest day, which gives the best visibility for snorkeling with turtles. Ask whether the price includes the marine park fee.
Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard and a light cover-up for boat days, since shade on the water is limited.
If you fly via Barbados, plan for a night there on at least one leg. Small planes have limited schedules and baggage weight limits. Weather can also cause delays.
The resort is pricey, so check what is included in your rate. Some packages bundle meals, transfers or spa credits. Finally, bring some US cash for Charlestown, where cards are not always accepted.
