The short answer

Nyungwe National Park suits active couples who want chimpanzees, rainforest hikes and a luxury tea-estate stay after gorilla trekking. Go in the June to September dry season or December to February, plan two or three nights and expect a six-hour drive from Kigali. The top lodge costs well over a thousand dollars a night. Check the advisory, since the western border area is a Do Not Travel zone.

Best for
  • Couples adding primates to a gorilla trip
  • Hikers who like cool, misty forest
  • A luxury retreat between active days
Maybe skip it if
  • You dislike early starts and muddy trails
  • You only have a few days in Rwanda

Nyungwe National Park is the best second stop for a Rwanda honeymoon, the place to go after the gorillas when you want forest, primates and a slower pace. The park protects about 390 square miles of ancient montane rainforest in the southwest of the country, climbing to almost 9,800 feet. Morning mist sits in the valleys, tree ferns crowd the trails and the air is cool enough for a sweater.

Thirteen primate species live here, about a quarter of Africa's total. Chimpanzees are the main draw, along with Angola colobus monkeys that move through the canopy in troops that can number in the hundreds. Birders come for more than 300 species, including around 30 found only in the Albertine Rift.

The forest edge is lined with tea plantations and that is where the most romantic stay sits. One&Only Nyungwe House, on the Gisakura tea estate, makes the park a luxury stop rather than a rough one. Plan two or three nights, ideally in the June to September dry season.

Why Honeymoon in Nyungwe

Nyungwe balances the intensity of gorilla trekking with time that feels more like a retreat. Chimp tracking starts early and can be strenuous, but afternoons are yours for a massage, a tea walk or a long lunch on a terrace above the forest.

The scenery is very different from the volcanoes in the north. Instead of bamboo and lava slopes, there is layered rainforest cut by deep ravines, with orchids, giant lobelias and waterfalls.

It is also quiet. Far fewer visitors make it here than to Volcanoes National Park, so trails rarely feel busy. For a couple who wants shared adventure with plenty of recovery time, it is a good fit. The drive in passes through Rwanda's green hill country, which is part of the experience.

Safety and the Advisory

The US State Department rates Rwanda Level 2, exercise increased caution, because of potential armed violence. It also lists areas within about 6 miles (10 km) of the DRC border in Rubavu and Rusizi districts as Do Not Travel.

Nyungwe's main lodges and trails sit east of that zone, but the park's western side is close to Rusizi district. Kamembe Airport (KME), sometimes suggested as a shortcut, is in Rusizi near the border. Road routes from Kigali via Huye avoid it.

Ask your operator to confirm that every transfer, trail and side trip stays outside the warning areas. Check the latest advisory before booking, because the zones can change. Inside the park, guided activities are well organized and staff are used to looking after international guests.

When to Go

Nyungwe is a rainforest, so expect some rain whatever the month. The drier periods are the best bet:

  • June to September: the main dry season. Trails are less muddy and views clearer. This is the busiest time across Rwanda.
  • December to February: a shorter, drier spell with green landscapes and fewer visitors.
  • March to May and October to November: the rainy seasons. Showers can be heavy and trails slippery, though lodges are quieter.

Temperatures stay mild year-round thanks to the altitude. Days are often in the 60s°F and nights can feel chilly. Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket in any season.

Where to Stay

One&Only Nyungwe House is the honeymoon choice. It sits on the Gisakura tea estate on the forest's edge, with rooms set in raised wooden buildings among the trees. The resort has a heated infinity pool and a full spa. Staff can arrange tea ceremonies, forest walks and stargazing. It is a splurge, priced like Rwanda's other top lodges, so expect well over a thousand dollars a night. That figure is approximate.

Mid-range options sit around Gisakura and the Uwinka area near the trailheads. They are simpler but comfortable and they put you close to the morning starts.

If you split time, many couples do two nights in Nyungwe after three in Volcanoes and finish with a night in Kigali.

Romantic Things to Do

  • Chimpanzee tracking: starts before dawn, when chimps are most active. Treks can last a few hours on steep, muddy ground. Once you find them, you spend about an hour watching.
  • The canopy walkway: a suspension bridge strung high across a forested ravine near Uwinka. The view down into the treetops is worth the wobble.
  • Colobus trek: a gentler walk to find large troops of black-and-white colobus monkeys.
  • Isumo waterfall hike: a half-day trail through forest and tea to a waterfall in a fern-lined gorge.
  • Tea estate visit: walk through the bushes, learn how leaves are processed and taste the result.

Permits for chimp tracking and the canopy walk are limited, so book them with your lodge or operator well ahead.

Getting There and Around

There are no nonstop flights from the US to Rwanda. Most couples connect through Brussels, Amsterdam, Doha, Istanbul, Addis Ababa or Nairobi to Kigali International Airport (KGL).

From Kigali, the drive to Nyungwe takes around six hours on paved roads through the hills, usually with a stop in Huye for lunch or the ethnographic museum. Most couples travel with a private driver-guide arranged by their operator.

Helicopter transfers from Kigali to a helipad near the forest save most of a day and give you an aerial view of the hills and lakes. They are expensive, so some couples fly one way and drive the other. Inside the park, rangers lead all treks from set trailheads.

Food and Drink

Rwandan food is simple and fresh. Expect brochettes of goat or beef, grilled tilapia from the lakes, beans, plantains, cassava leaves and avocados the size of your fist.

The tea is the local specialty. Rwanda's high-altitude teas are prized and estates near Gisakura grow some of them. A tea tasting at the edge of the forest is a gentle way to end a day of trekking.

Coffee is excellent too. Look for local single-origin beans to take home. At One&Only, menus mix international dishes with Rwandan ingredients and the kitchen will pack a breakfast for early chimp starts. Tap water is not recommended; lodges provide filtered or bottled water.

Honeymoon Tips

  • Book chimp permits as early as possible, especially for June to September.
  • Bring sturdy waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, a light rain shell and gardening gloves for grabbing vines on steep slopes.
  • Expect early alarms. Chimp treks can begin around dawn, so plan relaxed afternoons.
  • Malaria is present in Rwanda. Speak to a travel doctor about prevention, use repellent and cover up at dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
  • Single-use plastic bags are banned in Rwanda. Pack with reusable bags.
  • Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book.

FAQ

Nyungwe National Park honeymoon FAQ

Is Nyungwe worth adding to a Rwanda gorilla honeymoon?

Yes, if you have at least two extra nights. Nyungwe adds chimpanzees, monkeys and a very different forest landscape and the luxury lodge makes it restful between treks. Couples with less time often choose Akagera instead for a classic savanna safari. With ten days, many itineraries include both.

How hard is chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe?

It varies by day. Chimps move fast and the terrain is steep, muddy and humid, so a trek can take anywhere from an hour to several hours. You need reasonable fitness and good boots. Rangers adjust the pace and porters can be hired to carry your bag and help on slippery slopes.

Is Nyungwe in the Do Not Travel zone?

The State Department's Do Not Travel areas cover land within about 10 km of the DRC border in Rubavu and Rusizi districts. Nyungwe's main lodges and trailheads lie east of that, but the park's western side is close. Confirm routes and side trips with your operator and check the advisory before booking.

How do we get to Nyungwe from Kigali?

Most couples drive, which takes about six hours with a driver-guide, often stopping in Huye on the way. Helicopter transfers are faster and offer great views but cost much more. Avoid routing through Kamembe Airport near the border without checking the latest advisory first.

What should we pack for Nyungwe?

Bring waterproof hiking boots, a rain jacket, long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, a warm fleece and gloves for gripping vines. Insect repellent and a small daypack are useful. Lodges can lend rain gear in a pinch, but well-broken-in boots matter most on steep, muddy trails.
