The short answer

Le Morne is one of the strongest honeymoon bases in Mauritius: a wide jade lagoon, a UNESCO-listed basalt mountain and sunsets straight over the ocean. Go in April, May or September to November; June to August is windy, which kitesurfers love. Most couples stay at upscale resorts such as LUX* Le Morne or Beachcomber's Dinarobin and Paradis, while La Gaulette has cheaper villas and guesthouses. Book a guided dawn climb of Le Morne Brabant.

Best for
  • Couples who want a resort with scenery
  • Beginners keen to learn kitesurfing
  • Hikers after one big sunrise climb
Maybe skip it if
  • You want a lively town nearby
  • Breezy beach afternoons would bother you

Le Morne is the postcard most people picture when they think of Mauritius, even if they do not know its name. A 556 meter block of dark basalt rises almost straight out of the southwest corner of the island. Wrapped around its foot is a lagoon so wide and shallow that the water stays the color of pale jade for hundreds of yards. A handful of large resorts share the peninsula's beaches, with the mountain looming over every pool.

The setting carries real weight. Le Morne Brabant was a refuge for people who escaped slavery in the 18th and early 19th centuries. UNESCO listed it in 2008 as a cultural landscape for that reason. A memorial near the public beach marks the history.

For honeymooners the appeal is the combination: a resort stay with serious scenery, a sunset view out over open water and quick access to the hills of Chamarel and Black River Gorges. It is also one of the best places in the world to learn to kitesurf. The tradeoff is wind, which can be strong in the southern winter months.

Why Honeymoon in Le Morne

Most Mauritian beach areas offer good water or a good view. Le Morne gives you both at once. The peninsula faces west and south, so evenings bring the sun down into the ocean beside the mountain. The reef sits far enough offshore that the lagoon feels like a private lake.

It also feels removed. There is no real town on the peninsula, just the resorts, a public beach and the small fishing village of Le Morne on the main road. Nights are quiet and the sky is dark.

Yet you are not stuck. Chamarel, with its waterfall, rum distillery and colored dunes, is a short drive up the hill. Black River Gorges National Park and the dolphin boats of Tamarin are close too. For couples who want a resort base that still lets them explore, it is the strongest single location on the island.

When to Go

April, May and September through November are the best balance. The weather is mostly dry and warm, the lagoon is calm in the mornings and prices sit below the Christmas peak.

From June to August the southeast trade winds blow steadily across the peninsula. Kitesurfers love it and the air is pleasantly cool, but the lagoon can be choppy by afternoon and beach loungers feel breezy. Sheltered spots on the west-facing side of the peninsula help.

December to March is hot, humid and the wettest stretch, with the chance of a passing cyclone. The west coast stays drier than the east even then, so Le Morne is a reasonable summer choice if you accept some afternoon storms. Book far ahead for the holidays, when European families fill the resorts.

Where to Stay

The peninsula holds a short row of upscale resorts, each with direct lagoon frontage and the mountain behind. Beachcomber runs two side by side, Dinarobin and Paradis, which share facilities and include a golf course. LUX* Le Morne sits on a quieter stretch with an couples-focused feel. Expect large rooms, several restaurants per property and plenty of honeymoon extras if you mention the occasion.

If you want more variety for dinners, look just north along the coast at La Gaulette, Tamarin and Black River. These areas have smaller boutique hotels, villa rentals with private pools and guesthouses at much lower prices, plus local restaurants within walking distance.

When comparing rooms, ask which way they face. Sunset-facing rooms on the western shore get the best evening light, while rooms facing the mountain have the more dramatic view by day.

Romantic Things to Do

Hike Le Morne Brabant early, before the heat. The lower trail climbs to a viewpoint with a cross and a long look down over the lagoon. The upper section is a steep scramble with rope-assisted moves, so many couples hire a local guide. Allow about three to four hours round trip.

Take a scenic flight. From the air, sand sliding off the edge of the shelf southwest of the peninsula creates the illusion of a waterfall plunging under the sea. Helicopter and seaplane operators sell short flights over it.

Book a private boat to Île aux Bénitiers and Crystal Rock for snorkeling and a barbecue lunch on the sand. Drive up to Chamarel for the Seven Coloured Earths, the waterfall and a rum tasting. Finish with a sunset drink on the public beach, where families picnic and fishermen bring in boats.

Getting There and Around

Le Morne is on the far side of the island from the airport. Resort transfers take roughly 75 to 90 minutes along the south coast road or across the motorway, depending on traffic. Arrange the transfer before you land; after a 24 hour journey you will not want to negotiate with taxi drivers.

A rental car is the easiest way to explore. The coastal road runs north to Tamarin and Flic en Flac and south around to Baie du Cap, while the winding road up to Chamarel starts a few minutes from the peninsula. Drive on the left and take the mountain bends slowly.

If you would rather not drive, most resorts can book a driver for a full day of sightseeing at a fixed rate. Buses run along the main road but are slow and infrequent for this corner of the island.

Food and Drink

Resort dining dominates. The better hotels offer several restaurants, from beach grills to Indian and Asian menus. Half board makes sense here since there are few independent restaurants on the peninsula itself.

For something local, drive into La Gaulette or up to Chamarel, where hillside restaurants serve Creole dishes such as rougaille, a tomato and chili stew with fish or sausage. Try the venison curry from the deer that roam the island's estates. Octopus curry is a coastal staple.

The Rhumerie de Chamarel distills rum from its own cane and offers tours and tastings, a good way to spend a hot afternoon. Back at the beach, look for vendors selling gateaux piments, small fried chili cakes, along with fresh coconuts and pineapple carved on a stick. Phoenix is the local beer.

Honeymoon Tips

If either of you wants to kitesurf, book lessons in advance for the windy months and choose a school that teaches in the shallow inner lagoon. The reef passes are for experts only.

Pack reef-safe sunscreen and water shoes; stonefish and sea urchins live in the shallows here as they do around the island.

Wind matters more than rain in winter. If a breezy pool deck would bother you, book Le Morne for the shoulder months and spend the windy season on the sheltered north coast instead.

Split your stay. Le Morne is a long way from the airport, so pairing it with a few nights on the east or north coast before you fly home cuts the final transfer and gives you a second look at the island.

Mention your honeymoon when booking. Resorts here often add turndown touches, a bottle of sparkling wine or a beach dinner offer.

FAQ

Le Morne honeymoon FAQ

Can anyone hike Le Morne Brabant?

The lower part of the trail is a moderate uphill walk that fit couples can do on their own, reaching a viewpoint with a cross. The final section to the summit involves steep rocky scrambling and some exposure. Many visitors hire a local guide for that part. Start early, carry plenty of water and wear proper shoes rather than sandals.

Is Le Morne too windy for a beach honeymoon?

It can be from about June to August, when the trade winds blow across the peninsula most afternoons. Mornings are often calmer. If you mainly want still water and quiet loungers, aim for April, May or September to November. Kitesurfers and couples who like cooler air may enjoy the winter breeze.

How far is Le Morne from the airport?

Plan on roughly 75 to 90 minutes by car from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport, depending on traffic and route. Most resorts offer private transfers, which is the easiest option after a long flight. Because of the distance, many couples stay on the east or southeast coast for their last nights.

Is the underwater waterfall real?

No. It is an optical illusion created by sand and silt running off the edge of a shelf into deeper water southwest of the peninsula. From the air, the pattern looks like a waterfall falling into the sea. You can only see it properly from a helicopter or seaplane. Clear sunny days give the best view.

Is Le Morne good for snorkeling?

The lagoon right off the resort beaches is sandy and shallow, so the snorkeling there is modest. For coral and fish, take a boat to Île aux Bénitiers or out toward the reef, where guides know the best spots. Water clarity is usually best on calm mornings.
