At a glanceTwo nights in the hills above Kandy, three inside the 17th-century walls of Galle Fort, then five nights in a pool villa on Raa Atoll in the Maldives, about an hour and a half by air from Colombo plus a seaplane. It suits couples who want culture and food first, then pure rest. A private driver handles Sri Lanka. Go from January to April, when both countries are in their dry season.
The Maldives is one of the great honeymoon finales, but a week of lagoon views can feel thin on its own after a long flight. Sri Lanka fixes that. It sits about an hour and a half away by air and gives you temples, colonial streets and some of the best food in South Asia before you collapse into a pool villa.
This route starts in Kandy, Sri Lanka's last royal capital, set around a lake in forested hills. Two nights in a manor house above town cover the evening drums at the Temple of the Tooth and the botanic gardens at Peradeniya.
Your driver then takes you to Galle on the southwest coast. Inside the walls of Galle Fort, you walk the ramparts at sunset, browse design shops and eat rice and curry in old merchant houses. Three nights there is the right amount.
The last five nights are on Raa Atoll in the Maldives, reached by seaplane over the atolls. Raa has room to spread out, with resorts such as JOALI Maldives on their own islands. You do very little there, which is the point.

Day by day
Days 1–2: Kandy
Fly into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) via Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul or Singapore. Your driver meets you for the drive to Kandy, about three to three and a half hours. Check into a hotel in the hills above town, such as The Kandy House in Gunnepana, with its infinity pool over paddy fields. Rest.
On the evening of day 1 or day 2, attend the puja at the Temple of the Tooth, when drummers play and offerings are carried to the shrine of Sri Lanka's most sacred relic. Cover shoulders and knees for both of you and remove shoes. Walk the lake path at dusk afterward. That quiet circuit of the lake, with the temple lit behind you, is the romantic moment of Kandy.
On day 2, visit the orchid house at the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens in the morning. Book an Ayurvedic treatment in the afternoon. If you have energy, take a short ride on the hill country train for the views.
Days 3–5: Galle
Drive from Kandy to Galle on day 3, roughly four and a half to five hours on the expressways around Colombo. Stop for lunch on the way. Check into your hotel inside the fort.
On day 4, browse the jewelers and design shops of Pedlar Street in the morning, then take a Sri Lankan cooking class together. In the late afternoon, walk the ramparts to the lighthouse as the sun drops into the Indian Ocean. That walk, with cricket games on the grass below and the sea on three sides, is the romantic moment of Galle.
On day 5, rise early to watch the stilt fishermen near Koggala at dawn, then swim at Jungle Beach below Rumassala, a short tuk-tuk ride away. Make one evening your splurge with dinner at Amangalla, which occupies the old New Oriental Hotel, or a drink on its veranda. Inside the fort, walk everywhere. The whole town fits into a 20-minute circuit.
Days 6–10: Raa Atoll, Maldives
Drive about two and a half hours to the airport on day 6 and fly to Velana International Airport (MLE), about an hour and a half. From Malé, most Raa resorts use a seaplane of about 40 to 45 minutes. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so choose a morning flight from Colombo. Some resorts use a domestic flight to Ifuru (IFU) plus a speedboat, which can operate after dark.
Your first full day is for doing nothing. Swim off your villa deck, nap and watch the color of the lagoon change.
On day 8, snorkel the house reef or take a boat to dive Vandhoo Thila's soft corals. On day 9, book a sandbank picnic for two, with nobody else in sight. That is the romantic moment of the trip. On day 10, have dinner at an underwater restaurant if your resort or a neighbor offers one. If you travel from June onward, ask about manta trips to Hanifaru Bay, which usually sees its biggest feeding gatherings from around June to November.
Day 11: Home from Malé
Take the seaplane or domestic flight back to Malé, timed by your resort to your international departure. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so a late-night flight may mean a long afternoon wait near the airport. Ask your resort about lounges.
There are no nonstop flights from the Maldives to the US. Most couples connect through a Gulf hub such as Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, or through Istanbul or Europe. A night in the Gulf can break up the trip home.
Transfers are arranged by your resort and usually charged per person on top of the room rate. Confirm the price and timing when you book so there are no surprises at checkout.
If you have a long wait in Malé, a short ride by bridge or ferry takes you to the capital for a walk past the Old Friday Mosque and the fish market. Dress modestly for both of you there, with shoulders and knees covered.
Getting Between Stops
In Sri Lanka, hire a car with a driver for the whole trip. The airport to Kandy takes about three to three and a half hours. Kandy to Galle takes roughly four and a half to five hours via the expressways around Colombo. Galle to the airport takes about two and a half hours, longer at rush hour.
Flights from Colombo to Malé take about an hour and a half. Book a morning flight so you can catch a daylight seaplane to Raa. From Malé, seaplanes take about 40 to 45 minutes. Some resorts use a domestic flight to Ifuru (IFU) and a short speedboat instead.
In Kandy and Galle, tuk-tuks are easy for short trips. Agree on the fare first or use the PickMe and Uber apps where they work. Once you reach your Maldives island, everything is within walking or bicycling distance.
Where to Stay
Around Kandy, The Kandy House is a restored manor with a small number of rooms and an infinity pool. Amaya Hills sits high on a ridge with hill views. Cinnamon Citadel Kandy is a reliable full-service choice on the Mahaweli River.
In Galle, Amangalla is the grand choice inside the fort, with high ceilings, wide verandas and a pool in the back garden. The Galle Fort Hotel, a converted merchant's house on Church Street, is smaller and more intimate. Just outside, the Jetwing Lighthouse was designed by Geoffrey Bawa with a long pool beside the surf.
On Raa Atoll, JOALI Maldives is an art-focused resort with pool villas and an ESPA spa. Alila Kothaifaru has clean modern design and a strong house reef. You and Me Maldives is a kid-free resort designed around couples.

When to Go
January to April is the best window for both countries. Kandy is at its driest and most comfortable. Galle and the southwest coast have calm seas and mostly clear skies from December to April. Raa Atoll is in its dry northeast monsoon season, with the most sunshine and the best visibility. This is peak season in the Maldives, with the highest rates around Christmas, New Year and Easter.
May and October to November are shoulder months, with mixed weather and better value in the Maldives. From May to September, the southwest monsoon brings rain and rough seas to Galle, though the town still works for food and walking. In Raa, the wetter months are manta season, with Hanifaru Bay trips from about June to November. October and November are typically the wettest months in Kandy.
Budget and Booking
Plan on roughly $300–700 a night for two in good Sri Lankan hotels, with Amangalla higher. A Maldives pool villa on Raa Atoll often runs about $1,000–3,000 or more a night, depending on the resort and meal plan. Seaplane transfers are usually charged per person on top. All figures are approximate.
Book the Maldives resort first and compare villa sizes, meal plans and transfer costs, which vary widely. Then book Colombo to Malé flights to match daylight seaplane times.
Other costs in Sri Lanka include the driver, the Temple of the Tooth, Peradeniya gardens, a cooking class and tuk-tuks. In the Maldives, add excursions such as dives, sandbank picnics and spa treatments, which are priced at resort rates.
Make It Shorter or Longer
For eight days, skip Kandy and spend three nights in Galle and four in the Maldives. Galle is about two and a half hours from the airport, so it works as a first stop.
With two weeks, add three nights near Sigiriya before Kandy. Climb the fifth-century rock fortress at opening, watch sunrise from Pidurangala and see elephants at Minneriya. It is about two and a half to three hours from Kandy.
Or add Ella between Kandy and Galle. Take the hill country train through tea estates to Ella and spend two nights among the tea slopes, then drive about four hours to the south coast. Couples who want more beach in Sri Lanka can add two nights at Cape Weligama, less than an hour east of Galle.
Honeymoon Tips
At temples in Sri Lanka, both of you need covered shoulders and knees. Remove shoes and hats. Do not pose for photos with your back to a Buddha statue.
In the Maldives, check your international arrival time against seaplane hours. Late arrivals may need a night near Malé first.
Pack reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard. Do not stand on coral and follow your resort's guidance on currents around the house reef.
Dengue is present in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Use repellent at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for both countries before booking. Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book.
FAQPlanning this trip
How do we get from Sri Lanka to the Maldives?
Fly from Colombo (CMB) to Velana International Airport (MLE) near Malé, about an hour and a half. From there, most Raa Atoll resorts use a seaplane of about 40 to 45 minutes. Book a morning flight from Colombo, since seaplanes fly only in daylight.
Should we do Sri Lanka or the Maldives first?
Sri Lanka first. You arrive with energy for temples, walks and long dinners, then finish with five nights of rest in the Maldives. Ending in a pool villa also means the last memory of your honeymoon is the calmest one. Flights home connect easily from Malé through the Gulf.
Why Raa Atoll?
Raa has room to spread out, with resorts on their own islands and a good range of styles, from JOALI Maldives to kid-free You and Me Maldives. It is about 40 to 45 minutes by seaplane from Malé. From about June to November, it is close to the manta gatherings at Hanifaru Bay.
Is Galle worth it if we only want beaches?
Yes, for a couple of nights. Galle Fort has the best food, shopping and evening walks on the south coast, with beaches a short tuk-tuk ride away. If you want more sand, split your stay between the fort and a beach hotel toward Unawatuna or Weligama.
When is the best time to combine Sri Lanka and the Maldives?
January to April, when Kandy, Galle and the central Maldives are all in their dry seasons. Seas are calm on the southwest coast and visibility is good in the atolls. Book early for January and February. Expect peak Maldives rates around Christmas, New Year and Easter.
