At a glance

Four nights on the long, quiet beaches of Khao Lak with a snorkel day in the Similan Islands, two nights in the Khao Sok rainforest including one on Cheow Lan Lake, then five nights on Koh Lanta. Everything moves by private car, so there are no domestic flights once you land in Phuket. It suits beach couples who want one wild night in the middle. Go from January to March.

This is a Thailand honeymoon for couples who mostly want to swim. It skips Bangkok and Phuket's busy west coast and strings together three very different sides of the Andaman coast by road.

You land at Phuket International Airport (HKT) and drive north for about an hour and a quarter to Khao Lak, a long run of uncrowded beaches with the Similan Islands on the horizon. Four nights there give you a snorkel day at the Similans and time to recover from the flight.

Then you turn inland to Khao Sok, one of the oldest rainforests in the region. You spend a night on Cheow Lan Lake in a floating bungalow below limestone towers, listening for gibbons at dawn. It is the wild middle of the trip and the night most couples talk about afterward.

The last five nights are on Koh Lanta, a long island with sunset beaches and a laid-back pace. Kantiang Bay, with Pimalai Resort and Spa on the hill above it, is where you finally stop moving.

Day by day

Days 1–4: Khao Lak

Fly into Phuket (HKT) via an Asian or Middle Eastern hub and drive about 1 hour 15 minutes north to Khao Lak. Book a private transfer through your resort. Spend the rest of day 1 by the pool.

Day 2 is a beach day. Walk the empty sand at Pakarang Cape in the morning and come back for a long lunch. On day 3, take a day trip to the Similan Islands National Park, which is open only in the dry season. Speedboats leave early from the mainland and spend the day at granite reefs with clear water and white sand. Choose an operator that limits group sizes.

Keep day 4 slow. Visit the tsunami memorial at Bang Niang, then spend the late afternoon on the beach. Watching the sun drop into the Andaman Sea with your feet in the water, with no one else in sight for a mile, is the romantic moment of Khao Lak. The main road is busy and has few sidewalks, so use taxis or the resort shuttle at night.

Days 5–6: Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake

On day 5, drive inland to Khao Sok, roughly an hour and a half. Stay the first night at a jungle lodge near the park village along the Sok River. In the afternoon, float down the river on an inner tube or take a guided walk to a waterfall. Bring closed shoes and leech socks for the trails.

Early on day 6, drive about an hour to the pier at Ratchaprapha Dam and board a long-tail boat across Cheow Lan Lake, a ride of an hour or more between limestone cliffs. Spend the night in a floating bungalow. Elephant Hills runs a Rainforest Camp of floating tents with private bathrooms, usually sold as a package with guides and transfers. Many other rafts are far more basic, so check what yours includes.

Kayak between the cliffs in the late afternoon. Then wake at first light on the morning of day 7, when mist sits on the jade water and gibbons call from the forest. That dawn, from your deck, is the romantic moment of the trip.

Days 7–11: Koh Lanta

Boat back across the lake on the morning of day 7, then drive south to Koh Lanta. Allow about four hours by private car, including the short car ferry and the bridge onto the island. Settle into your resort around Kantiang Bay or Klong Nin in time for sunset.

Day 8 is for nothing at all. On day 9, take a boat to Koh Rok to snorkel its reefs, or to Koh Mook to swim through a dark sea tunnel into the Emerald Cave. Day 10 is your splurge: book a pool villa or a private beach dinner at Pimalai Resort and Spa, whose villas have long been popular with honeymooners. A sunset drink at a Kantiang Bay beach bar beforehand is the romantic moment of Lanta.

On day 11, hire a car and driver to see the stilt houses of Lanta Old Town on the east coast and hike to the lighthouse in the national park at the southern tip. If one of you would rather stay put, book a spa morning and meet for lunch.

Day 12: Home from Krabi

Drive about 2.5 hours from Koh Lanta to Krabi Airport (KBV), including the car ferry. Connect home through Bangkok or another Asian hub. Expect waits at the ferry on busy afternoons, so leave earlier than you think you need to. If your long-haul flight leaves from Suvarnabhumi (BKK), check whether your Krabi flight lands there or at Don Mueang (DMK), since moving between the two Bangkok airports takes an hour or more.

If your connection leaves late in the evening, ask your resort for a late checkout and take a final swim in the morning. Many couples prefer to fly from Krabi to Bangkok the night before and stay near Suvarnabhumi, which takes pressure off a tight connection.

Phuket is also an option for the flight home. It is roughly the same distance from Lanta by road and car ferry and has more long-haul connections, so compare prices from both airports before you book.

Getting Between Stops

This route is all road, with one boat across the lake. Phuket airport to Khao Lak takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. Khao Lak to the Khao Sok park village is roughly an hour and a half. The lake pier is about another hour from the village. Khao Sok to Koh Lanta takes about four hours, including the car ferry.

Book a private car for each leg. Your Khao Sok lodge can arrange both transfers and will time the lake boat for you. There is no public transport inside the park.

On Koh Lanta, a car with a driver for the day is cheap and safer than a scooter. Tuk-tuk style motorbike taxis wait at every beach for short trips. In the dry season, ferries and speedboats also link Lanta with Koh Phi Phi, Ao Nang and Phuket, which gives you a way to add another island.

Where to Stay

In Khao Lak, the JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort and Spa is famous for its very long pool. The Sarojin is smaller and design-focused, with a strong reputation for service. Le Meridien Khao Lak is another large resort on the northern beaches. The beaches around Khuk Khak and Pakarang are quieter than Bang La On in the south.

In Khao Sok, choose a jungle lodge near the park village for the first night and a floating stay on the lake for the second. Elephant Hills is the comfortable choice on the water, with private bathrooms in each tent.

On Koh Lanta, Pimalai Resort and Spa sits on a hillside above Kantiang Bay with pool villas. The north end around Long Beach suits couples who like to walk to dinner. The south is quieter, with a few resorts and simple bungalows.

When to Go

January to March is the best window. The Andaman Sea is calm, the sky is reliable and Khao Sok is at its driest, with firmer trails and fewer leeches. February is often the least rainy month in the rainforest. December is a close second, though Christmas and New Year bring peak prices on the coast.

The Similan Islands National Park opens only in the dry season, roughly from fall until mid-May, so check its exact dates if snorkeling there is a priority.

From May to October, the southwest monsoon brings heavy rain and big waves. Many smaller places on Lanta close, ferries stop and Khao Lak's sea is often too rough to swim. Khao Sok gets very wet from August to November. If you can only travel in summer, Thailand's Gulf islands are the better choice.

Budget and Booking

Plan on roughly $250–800 a night for two at good resorts in Khao Lak and on Koh Lanta, more for Pimalai villas and over the holidays. Khao Sok lake stays are usually sold as packages priced per person, with meals, boat transfers and guided activities included. All figures are approximate.

Book Khao Sok first if you want Elephant Hills or a specific raft, since the comfortable options are limited. Then book Koh Lanta and Khao Lak.

Other costs include the Similans day trip, the Koh Rok or Koh Mook boat trip, national park entrance fees, private cars between stops and a driver for a day on Lanta. Seafood dinners on the beach are inexpensive by US standards, so save your splurge for one special night.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For nine days, cut Khao Lak to two nights, keep one night on the lake and spend four nights on Koh Lanta. You lose the Similans but keep the shape.

With two weeks, add three nights in Bangkok at the start. It is a short flight to Phuket and gives you temples, river views and street food before the beaches.

Or add Koh Yao Noi between Khao Lak and Lanta. It sits in Phang Nga Bay about 30 minutes by boat from Phuket's east coast, with rice paddies, fishing villages and limestone views. Couples who want a night of energy could add Koh Phi Phi, which is linked to Lanta by ferry in the dry season, though it is busier than anywhere else on this route.

Honeymoon Tips

Respect red flags on the beaches of Khao Lak and Koh Lanta. Currents can be strong, especially outside the calm months. Swim where others are swimming.

Pack light for the lake. Many camps ask you to leave big bags with your driver or at the pier. Bring a dry bag, a headlamp, repellent and quick-dry clothes.

Scooters are widely rented on Lanta, but accidents are common and travel insurance may not cover you without the right license. Hire a car with a driver instead.

Dengue is present in Thailand, so use repellent at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before booking. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard for snorkel days, when the sun on the water is fierce.

FAQ

Planning this trip

Is Khao Sok worth it on a honeymoon?

Yes, for one or two nights. Waking up in a floating bungalow on Cheow Lan Lake, with limestone towers rising out of the water, is unlike anything on the beaches. Comfort varies widely, though. Many rafts are basic, so book a camp with private bathrooms if that matters to you.

Do we need any domestic flights?

No. You fly into Phuket and out of Krabi or Phuket. Everything in between is by road. Private cars are affordable and your hotels can arrange each transfer. That keeps the trip simple and avoids the airport waits that eat into short Thai itineraries.

Which is better for a honeymoon, Khao Lak or Koh Lanta?

They suit different moods. Khao Lak has long, empty beaches, big resorts and access to the Similan Islands. Koh Lanta has more character, with island villages, beach bars and boat trips to Koh Rok and Koh Mook. This route uses both, which is why it works so well.

Can we see the Similan Islands any time of year?

No. The Similan Islands National Park is open only in the dry season, roughly from fall until mid-May. It closes for the monsoon. Check the exact opening dates before you book if snorkeling there is a priority. Day trips leave early from the Khao Lak coast.

What should we pack for this route?

Swimwear, rash guards, reef-safe sunscreen and sandals for the beaches. For Khao Sok, add closed shoes, leech socks, a headlamp, a dry bag and a light rain jacket. Temples are few on this route, but bring one outfit that covers shoulders and knees for both of you.
