The short answer

Charlevoix is ideal for couples who want a slow, scenic Quebec honeymoon with river-view inns, whale watching and excellent local food. Go late June to mid-October for whales, hikes and fall color, or in winter for skiing. Stay three to five nights, ideally after Quebec City. Inns run roughly US$200 to $500 a night in summer.

Best for
  • Food and cheese lovers
  • Scenic road-trip couples
  • Whale watchers
Maybe skip it if
  • You want beaches and warm water
  • You prefer city nightlife

Charlevoix is the Quebec countryside at its most romantic: rolling hills that fall toward the St. Lawrence River, where the water is so wide it looks like the sea. The region begins about an hour east of Quebec City and stretches along the north shore through Baie-Saint-Paul and La Malbaie toward the Saguenay Fjord. UNESCO named it a World Biosphere Reserve. The valley floor sits inside an ancient meteorite crater, which explains the dramatic dip and rise of the land.

Couples come for clifftop inns, long dinners built on local cheese and lamb, whale-watching cruises and walks through river gorges. The best time is late June through mid-October, with whales and warm days in summer and fall color from late September. Winter has its own appeal for skiers and spa lovers.

Fly into Quebec City (YQB) through a Canadian hub or drive from Montreal, about four hours. Stay three to five nights. Inns and boutique hotels run roughly US$200 to $500 a night in summer.

Why Honeymoon in Charlevoix

Charlevoix feels like a secret the Québécois keep for themselves. The landscape is pastoral and grand at once: farms and orchards tumble down slopes to a river dotted with islands. Mountain parks rise behind. Villages like Baie-Saint-Paul have art galleries, cafés and bakeries, while La Malbaie has the grand old hotel on the bluff.

It rewards couples who like to slow down. Spend a morning on the water looking for belugas, an afternoon on a scenic drive with tasting stops and an evening over a long, multi-course dinner. Active couples can hike in two national parks and bike around an island, while those who prefer relaxing can book spa time and take in the views. It also pairs naturally with a few nights in Quebec City.

When to Go

Late June through August is the warmest and busiest season, with highs usually in the 70s Fahrenheit and long evenings. It is the best time for whale watching, cycling and hiking. September brings cooler weather, fewer people and good conditions on the water.

Fall color usually arrives in late September and early October, when the forests in the national parks turn bright red and gold. Book early for that window.

Winter, from December to March, brings deep snow. Le Massif de Charlevoix draws skiers for runs that seem to drop toward the frozen river. Inns with fireplaces and spas are cozy. Some restaurants and attractions reduce hours. April, May and November are the quietest months, with mud season and little to do outdoors.

Where to Stay

Baie-Saint-Paul is a good base for the western half, with art galleries, restaurants and easy access to Le Massif and Parc national des Grands-Jardins. Le Germain Charlevoix Hotel and Spa sits near the waterfront on the edge of town, with a modern design and a spa.

La Malbaie, about 45 minutes farther east, is home to Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu, a historic grand hotel on a bluff above the river, next to the Casino de Charlevoix. Smaller inns in the area include Auberge La Pinsonnière, a refined inn above the river known for its food and wine.

Along Route 362 between the two towns, look for B&Bs and inns in villages such as Les Éboulements, where many rooms come with river views.

Romantic Things to Do

  • Take a whale-watching cruise from Baie-Sainte-Catherine, near the mouth of the Saguenay Fjord, where belugas live year-round and larger whales feed in summer.
  • Ride a river boat through the gorges of Parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie.
  • Take the free ferry to Isle-aux-Coudres and cycle the loop road around the island.
  • Drive Route 362 between Baie-Saint-Paul and La Malbaie, stopping at lookouts over the river.
  • Hike in Parc national des Grands-Jardins for views over the crater rim.
  • Browse art galleries and bakeries in Baie-Saint-Paul.
  • Ski at Le Massif de Charlevoix in winter with the frozen river below.

Getting There and Around

Quebec City Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB) is the closest major airport. US travelers usually connect through Montreal or Toronto. From the airport, it is about an hour and a half by car to Baie-Saint-Paul and a little over two hours to La Malbaie.

Another option is flying into Montreal-Trudeau (YUL), which has many US nonstops. From there the drive to the region takes about four hours, with an easy stop in Quebec City on the way.

A rental car is essential. Roads like Route 138 and Route 362 are scenic, with steep grades in places. In winter, rental cars must have winter tires. Snowstorms can slow travel. Allow extra time and avoid long night drives in bad weather.

Food and Drink

Charlevoix is one of Quebec's best food regions. The Route des Saveurs, or Flavour Trail, links farms, cheesemakers, bakeries and restaurants. Cheese is the star, with local dairies producing well-known washed-rind and soft cheeses. Charlevoix lamb, duck and veal also appear on menus around the region.

Add cider and fruit wines from orchards, small microbreweries and an excellent bakery or two in Baie-Saint-Paul.

For a special night, book a tasting menu at one of the inns along the river, where dinner can run for hours. Many restaurants serve table d'hôte menus, set multi-course dinners at a fixed price. Reservations are wise in summer and fall. French is the main language, though staff in hotels and many restaurants speak English.

Honeymoon Tips

Pack layers. Even in summer, the river breeze makes evenings cool. On whale-watching boats it can feel downright cold. Bring warm jackets for both of you.

Book whale-watching tours for early in your stay so you can reschedule if weather cancels a trip. Morning cruises often have calmer water.

The national parks require day passes. The boat tours in the Hautes-Gorges book up in peak season, so reserve ahead.

If you visit in winter, check road conditions before driving and plan for short days. In summer, carry insect repellent for hikes, especially in June.

Picking up a few French phrases helps in smaller villages. Locals appreciate the effort.
