Tena Tena is the South Luangwa camp to choose if you want a classic, unhurried bush experience in the quieter northern part of the valley. Robin Pope Safaris runs it in the Nsefu sector, an area known for dense wildlife and very few vehicles. The camp has eight safari tents set well apart under a grove of mahogany trees, on a two-tiered riverbank between the Luangwa River and a lagoon system that draws animals close.

Each tent has its own window onto the river, a veranda with comfortable seating and an en-suite bathroom with an outdoor shower open to the sky. The rate covers meals, drinks and activities, including day and night drives and walking safaris led by a guide and an armed scout. There is a viewing hide, plus a seasonal hippo hide in the hottest months.

It suits couples who care about guiding and wildlife more than luxury extras. There are no private plunge pools. It is also open only from late May to the end of October. For couples who want to feel deep in the bush, with good company around the fire and leopards on the night drive, it is an excellent choice.

Highlights at a glance

  • Eight tents spaced for privacy
  • Outdoor showers open to the sky
  • Viewing hide and a seasonal hippo hide
  • Meals, bar and activities included

Why Couples Love Tena Tena

The Nsefu sector is the main reason. It sits in the north of the park, away from the busier area around the Mfuwe gate, so you often have sightings to yourselves. The lagoons and river bring in elephants, buffalo, hippos, lions and leopards, along with huge numbers of birds.

Robin Pope Safaris has a long reputation for guiding. Tena Tena shows it. Guides are patient and knowledgeable, happy to spend time on small things as well as the big cats. The camp has a relaxed, sociable feel, though you can always ask for a private dinner on your veranda. The tents are spaced well apart, so you still feel alone at night.

Tents to Book

There are eight luxury safari tents, all of a similar standard. Each has a window looking onto the Luangwa River, a veranda with comfortable seating and an enclosed en-suite bathroom with an outdoor shower that is open to the elements. Showering under the sky with the sounds of the bush around you is a highlight.

The tents are spaced apart for privacy. Ask for one at the end of the row or with the widest river view when you book. There are no private plunge pools, so October can feel very hot. If you are sensitive to heat, come in June or July. Mention your honeymoon when you book, since the camp can arrange a private dinner or a special sundowner.

Food, Drink and Down Time

The rate includes all meals and the bar, so you do not need to keep track of drinks. Park fees are extra. The kitchen can cater to most dietary needs with notice.

There is no spa building, but a mobile spa can be arranged at extra cost. The middle of the day is for resting, reading on your veranda or watching the lagoon for elephants coming to drink. The viewing hide near camp is a great place to spend an hour in the heat. From late August to October a seasonal hippo hide lets you watch the pods up close. Evenings end around the fire with a drink and stories from the day.

Things to Do

Activities include day and night game drives in open-top Land Cruisers and guided walks with an armed National Park scout. Night drives are a highlight, since South Luangwa is one of the best places in Africa to see leopards after dark. Walking safaris are the classic Luangwa experience: slow, quiet and close to the ground.

You can also book a private guide and vehicle at extra cost, which is worth it for couples who want to set their own pace. Village tours to Kawaza cost $35 per person, with the money going to the community. A visit to a wildlife education center can also be arranged. Couples with different interests can mix walks and drives, or one can stay in the hide while the other heads out.

Getting There

Fly into Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka, then take a domestic flight of about an hour to Mfuwe Airport (MFU). From Mfuwe, a road transfer takes you north to the Nsefu sector. It is longer than the transfer to camps near the main gate, so ask Robin Pope Safaris for timings and arrange it when you book.

The camp is open from 22 May to 31 October. July to September is peak season, while May, June and October are shoulder months with lower rates. October is very hot but has excellent game viewing. This is a malaria area, so talk to a travel doctor about prevention. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Zambia before you go.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want great guiding in a quiet corner of the park, yes. Rates are about $885 per person per night in the shoulder season and $1,150 in peak season, so roughly $1,770 to $2,300 for two, plus park fees. Treat those as approximate. The rate includes meals, the bar and activities.

The trade-off is comfort. There are no private pools. The camp also closes for the rains. If you want a plunge pool and year-round opening, look at Chinzombo. If you want a lodge with more facilities at a lower price, Mfuwe Lodge is a good base. Tena Tena is for couples who want the bush to be the main event.
