Sundy Praia

Fifteen forest villas on a turtle beach in a Gulf of Guinea biosphere reserve

Sundy Praia is the most romantic place to stay on Príncipe and one of the most unusual honeymoon hotels in Africa. It has just 15 wooden tented villas set among almond and banana trees in the forest behind Sundy beach, a golden stretch of sand on the island's northwest coast where sea turtles nest. The one-bedroom villas, built for couples, have four-poster beds, floor-to-ceiling sliding windows, wraparound verandas and freestanding stone baths looking into the canopy.

Príncipe itself is the reason to come. The whole island is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, the south is uninhabited rainforest and you can spend a day on a beach without seeing another couple. Sundy Praia leans into that with a restaurant built around local produce, a small wellness suite using cocoa and banana leaf and guided trips into the forest and out to sea.

It suits couples who want wildlife, quiet and somewhere their friends have not heard of and who are happy with a long journey via São Tomé. It is not a polished beach resort with a dozen restaurants. Expect humidity, rain in the wetter months, limited connectivity and very little nightlife beyond the bar.

Why Couples Love Sundy Praia

The setting is wild in a way few honeymoon hotels can claim. The villas sit just back from the beach under tall trees, so you wake to birdsong and the sound of surf rather than other guests. Paths lead down to the sand and the hotel uses turtle-safe lighting and hatchling protection measures because the beach is an active nesting ground. Between roughly September and April, turtle-monitoring trips let you join conservation teams on the beach at night.

There is also a strong conservation and community story. Every stay includes a contribution per guest per night that supports conservation and community projects on the island and the hotel's food relies on an organic farm on the property and fish from local boats. Couples who want their honeymoon money to do some good and who like to understand a place rather than just look at it, tend to come home talking about the people as much as the beaches.

Villas to Book

There are three villa types, all tented wooden structures with private decks.

  • One-bedroom villas, eight in total, are designed for couples. Each has about 70 square meters inside plus a 50-square-meter terrace, a four-poster wooden bed and a freestanding stone bath. This is the honeymoon choice.
  • Two-bedroom villas, five in total, are two independent units sharing a deck, better suited to friends or family traveling together.
  • Three-bedroom villas, two in total, are the largest, at about 150 square meters inside with a private pool of roughly 10 by 4.5 meters.

Only the three-bedroom villas have their own pool, but there is a pool bar for everyone. Ask for a one-bedroom villa close to the beach if you want to hear the sea at night, or one deeper in the trees if you prefer more shade and birdlife from the veranda.

Food, Drink and the Spa

Meals are served at Oka Sundy, the restaurant under a high bamboo and thatch ceiling, or outdoors when the weather allows. The menu draws on fruit, vegetables and herbs from the hotel's organic farm, with tuna and wahoo landed by local fishermen. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served here, so ask in advance for a private beach dinner one evening for a change of scene. A bar, a pool bar and a coffee shop fill the gaps.

The wellness suite is small but well matched to the island. Signature treatments include a cocoa butter massage and a banana leaf body wrap, using locally sourced organic products. Príncipe was once a major cocoa producer and the restored plantation at nearby Roça Sundy still grows it.

Meal plans and inclusions vary, so check what your rate covers before you book, especially drinks and guided excursions.

Things to Do

The hotel arranges guided excursions that show off the island. A boat trip to the Bay of Needles, with its tall volcanic spires rising from the sea, includes time to snorkel. Biosphere trails lead into the rainforest and 4x4 tours cover the more remote parts of the island. Birdwatchers will be busy: Príncipe has endemic species that you can sometimes spot straight from your veranda.

For something different, visit a fishing village or join artisan and basket-weaving workshops, then tour the cacao farm at Roça Sundy, where Arthur Eddington's team photographed the 1919 solar eclipse that helped confirm Einstein's theory of relativity. Whale-spotting boat trips run in the drier gravana months, when humpbacks pass the island.

Malaria is present in São Tomé and Príncipe, so see a travel doctor about prevention and use repellent at dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before you book.

Getting There

Reaching Príncipe is part of the adventure. Most couples fly to São Tomé International Airport (TMS), usually via Lisbon or a regional hub, then take a small plane for the 35 to 45 minute hop to Príncipe Airport (PCP). Schedules on the domestic leg are limited, so build in a night in São Tomé each way rather than risking a tight connection.

From Príncipe Airport, the hotel is about 8 kilometers away and a free shuttle is provided. The drive is short but the roads are slow, which gives you a first look at the forest.

Pack light, breathable clothes, a rain jacket and good sandals for trails. Bring cash in euros for small purchases, since card acceptance outside hotels can be patchy. Check the US State Department advisory for São Tomé and Príncipe before booking. Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book.

Is It Worth It?

For the right couple, very much so. Sundy Praia offers a combination that is rare at any price: a small, thoughtfully designed hotel, a turtle beach, real rainforest and an island that has barely been touched by mass tourism. The one-bedroom villas, with their stone baths and verandas, are as romantic as many far more expensive lodges.

The trade-offs are real. Getting here takes time and planning, connectivity is limited and the climate is hot, humid and often rainy. There is one restaurant and a relaxed pace that will feel slow to couples who want variety. If you want a classic white-sand beach resort with easy flights and lots of dining choice, the Seychelles or the Caribbean will suit you better. If you want somewhere genuinely different for your honeymoon, with nature at the center, Sundy Praia is one of the best choices in Africa.

Insider tips

  1. Book a one-bedroom villa; the larger villas are built for groups.
  2. Plan your trip between September and April if turtle nesting is a priority.
  3. Stay a night in São Tomé on each side to protect against domestic flight changes.
  4. Ask about combining your stay with a night at Roça Sundy for the plantation history.

FAQ

Sundy Praia questions, answered

What are the villas at Sundy Praia like?

They are wooden tented villas set among trees behind the beach. The eight one-bedroom villas, designed for couples, have about 70 square meters indoors plus a 50-square-meter terrace, a four-poster bed and a freestanding stone bath. Larger two- and three-bedroom villas exist and only the three-bedroom villas have private pools.

When is the best time to visit Príncipe?

The drier gravana months, roughly June to September, bring less rain and the chance of humpback whales. Sea turtle nesting and monitoring trips run from about September to April. The island is warm and humid year-round and rain can fall at any time, so pack a light rain jacket whatever the season.

How do we get to Sundy Praia?

Fly to São Tomé International Airport (TMS), then take a small plane of about 35 to 45 minutes to Príncipe Airport (PCP). The hotel is roughly 8 kilometers from the airport and provides a free shuttle. Domestic flights are limited, so allow a night in São Tomé on the way in and out.

Is Sundy Praia kid-free?

No. It is listed as family friendly and the two- and three-bedroom villas are aimed at families and groups. With only 15 villas, though, it rarely feels busy and the atmosphere is quiet. Couples who want maximum privacy can ask for a one-bedroom villa set away from the larger units.

Are there health precautions for Príncipe?

Yes. Malaria is present in São Tomé and Príncipe, so talk to a travel doctor about prevention well before your trip and use repellent and cover up at dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices. Bring any medication you need, since pharmacies on the island are limited.
