Mfuwe Lodge is the most famous lodge in South Luangwa, known around the world as the lodge that elephants walk through. Every year, from about late October to mid-December, elephant families wander right through reception to feed on fallen wild mangoes from the trees around the main area. Seeing them stroll past the front desk is one of the strangest and most memorable moments a safari can offer.

Beyond the elephants, it is a comfortable, well-run lodge. There are 18 thatched chalets set around two lagoons just inside the park's main entrance, plus a pool, a spa and an outdoor gym. The lodge is open all year and is the gateway to The Bushcamp Company's string of small bush camps deeper in the park.

It suits couples who want a reliable, good-value base for South Luangwa, with easy access, solid rooms and great game viewing on the doorstep. It is larger and busier than the seasonal bush camps, so it does not feel remote. Many honeymooners spend two nights here and then move to one or two of the bush camps for a wilder finish.

Why Couples Love Mfuwe Lodge

The elephants are the obvious draw. In the mango season, families walk through the reception area while guests watch from a respectful distance. It is a reminder that you are in the animals' space rather than the other way around. Even outside that season, wildlife comes to the lagoons in front of the chalets: hippos, crocodiles, antelope and plenty of birds.

The lodge also makes safari easy. You are inside the park as soon as you leave the gate, so game drives start right away rather than after a long transfer. The rooms are comfortable, with air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms, which is welcome in the hot months. The staff are experienced and friendly. The guiding is excellent, as you would expect in a valley known for training top guides.

Chalets and Suites to Book

There are 18 thatched chalets in three types.

  • Thirteen standard rooms set around the lagoons, with air conditioning, mosquito nets and an en-suite bathroom.
  • Three family rooms, best for families or friends.
  • Two suites, which are larger and have bathtubs. These are the honeymoon choice.

With only two suites, book early if you want one. The standard rooms are comfortable and well placed, though, so they work well if the suites are full. Ask for a chalet with a clear lagoon view. Mention your honeymoon when you book, since the lodge can arrange a private dinner or a special sundowner. There is also a separate family house, which suits groups.

Food, Drink and the Spa

Rates typically include meals, house drinks, scheduled game drives and walking safaris, laundry and taxes. Premium drinks and some extra activities cost more. Meals are served in the main area overlooking the lagoon, with occasional bush dinners under the stars.

The lodge has a pool, a spa and an outdoor gym. The Bush-Spa is a good place for a couples massage in the heat of the day. There is also a library, a curio shop and a photographic studio for keen photographers. Wi-Fi is available in the main area. The middle of the day is for resting, swimming or watching the lagoon from your veranda before the afternoon drive.

Things to Do

Activities include game drives, walking safaris and sundowners. South Luangwa is famous for leopards, which are often seen on night drives, plus lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos and an endemic giraffe subspecies. Walking safaris, with a guide and an armed scout, are the classic way to explore the valley and a quiet, close-up way to share the bush.

From Mfuwe Lodge you can also move on to The Bushcamp Company's small seasonal camps, such as Chindeni, Bilimungwe, Kapamba and Chamilandu, which sit deeper in the park and offer a more remote stay. A combination of two nights at the lodge and two or three at a bush camp is a classic South Luangwa honeymoon.

Getting There

Fly into Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka, then take a domestic flight of about an hour to Mfuwe Airport (MFU). The lodge is about 45 minutes by road from the airport. Ask about transfers when you book.

The lodge is open all year. July to October is the dry season, with the best game viewing. Late October to mid-December brings the elephant visits to reception, along with heat and the first rains. The green season, roughly December to April, is lush and quiet. This is a malaria area, so talk to a travel doctor about prevention. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Zambia before you go.

Is It Worth It?

Yes, especially for value. Rates range from about $580 to $835 per person per night depending on the season, so roughly $1,160 to $1,670 for two, plus government levies and park fees of around $90 per person per night. Treat those as approximate and confirm the basis with reservations. For a lodge inside the park with meals, drinks and activities included, that is good value in Zambia.

The trade-off is intimacy. With 18 chalets, it feels busier than the small bush camps. You will also share vehicles with other guests. If you want a private pool and more seclusion, look at Chinzombo. If you want a remote seasonal camp, add one of the Bushcamp Company's bush camps. Mfuwe Lodge is a good base.
