The short answer

Kafue National Park suits couples who want a big, quiet wilderness with lions, cheetahs and leopards and very few other vehicles. Go between June and October, ideally late August or September. Plan five or more nights split between the Busanga Plains and the Kafue River. Fully inclusive camps cost roughly several hundred to over a thousand dollars per person per night, plus charter flights from Lusaka.

Best for
  • Repeat safari-goers who want solitude
  • Couples keen on balloon flights and big cats
  • Pairing with Victoria Falls or South Luangwa
Maybe skip it if
  • You want guaranteed Big Five sightings in two days
  • You can only travel between December and April

Kafue National Park is a good honeymoon choice for couples who have done a safari before, or who care more about solitude than ticking off the Big Five in two days. It is Zambia's largest and oldest national park, covering roughly 8,600 square miles of woodland, river and seasonal floodplain in the west of the country. That is bigger than New Jersey, with only a few dozen camps spread across it.

The headline is the Busanga Plains in the far northwest. After the rains, the plains flood. As they dry out from about July, they turn into open grassland dotted with palm islands, where herds of red lechwe and puku graze under the watch of lions and cheetahs. Mornings often start in low mist. Farther south, the Kafue River runs year-round, lined with riverine forest where leopards hunt and hippos grunt through the night.

The park is a dry-season destination. Most camps open around May or June and close by mid-November. Come in August or September and the two of you could easily share a lion sighting with no other vehicle in sight.

Why Honeymoon in Kafue

Space is the main reason. South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi are better known and busier. Kafue gets a fraction of their visitors across a much larger area, so game drives feel like private outings even when they are not.

The variety helps too. The park is recorded as home to more than 150 mammal species and over 500 bird species, along with around 20 kinds of antelope, including sable and roan. It also holds Zambia's largest cheetah population and is a stronghold for African wild dogs.

The conservation story is encouraging. Since 2021 the Zambian government has worked with the nonprofit African Parks on long-term management of the park. Your camp fees help fund patrols and community work, which is a good thing to know when you are paying safari prices.

When to Go

The useful window runs from roughly June to October, with some camps open from May and a few into November.

  • June and July: cool, dry and green-gold. Nights can drop close to freezing on the plains, so pack a warm layer. Busanga is still drying out, which makes boat trips possible early on.
  • August to October: peak game viewing. Water is scarce, animals gather near rivers and pools. Balloon flights over Busanga usually run in this period. October gets hot, often above 95°F.
  • November to April: the rains arrive and much of the park becomes inaccessible. Most camps close.

For a honeymoon, late August and September balance warm days, cool evenings and strong wildlife.

Where to Stay

Couples usually split their nights between two areas: the Busanga Plains in the north and the Kafue River in the center or south.

On Busanga, the best-known camps include Shumba Camp and Busanga Bush Camp from Wilderness, both small and seasonal, with views straight onto the plains. Chisa Busanga Camp is known for unusual raised rooms designed to resemble bird nests.

Along the river, Ila Safari Lodge and KaingU Safari Lodge offer riverside rooms, boat trips and a more relaxed pace. These suit a few nights of slower days after the intensity of Busanga.

Most top camps are fully inclusive of meals, drinks and activities. Expect roughly several hundred to well over a thousand dollars per person per night depending on the camp and month. These figures are approximate, so get quotes.

Romantic Things to Do

A balloon flight over the Busanga Plains at sunrise is the signature experience. You float low over lechwe herds and palm islands, then land for a bush breakfast. Flights depend on weather and run only in the drier months, so book early.

Other moments couples tend to remember:

  • A sundowner drive that ends with drinks on a termite mound as the plains turn pink.
  • A slow boat cruise on the Kafue River, watching for leopards in the riverbank trees and African finfoot in the reeds.
  • A guided walk with an armed scout, learning to read tracks together.
  • Fishing for tigerfish from a boat, catch and release.
  • A private dinner under the stars, which most camps will set up if you mention your honeymoon.

Getting There and Around

There are no nonstop flights from the US to Zambia. Most couples connect through Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Doha or Dubai into Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka.

From Lusaka, the easiest way into Kafue is a light-aircraft charter to one of the park's airstrips. Your camp or safari planner will arrange it. Light aircraft have strict luggage limits, usually soft bags only and a modest weight cap per person, so pack small.

The Lusaka to Mongu road crosses the middle of the park. Some southern lodges can be reached by road from Lusaka or Livingstone. Expect a long day on the road. Inside the park, you travel in your camp's open vehicles and boats with a guide, so there is no self-driving to worry about.

Food and Drink

Camp food is better than most couples expect. Breakfast is early and light before the morning activity, followed by brunch back at camp. Afternoon tea comes with cake before the evening drive. Dinner is often three courses around a long table or by the fire, with South African wines and a fully stocked bar.

Look for Zambian touches: nshima, the stiff maize porridge eaten with relish and stews, bream from the river and seasonal greens. Many camps will serve a traditional meal if you ask.

Dietary needs are well handled with notice. Remote camps receive supplies by road or air, so tell your planner about allergies or preferences when you book, not when you arrive.

Honeymoon Tips

  • Combine Kafue with Victoria Falls. Livingstone is the natural add-on. The falls are at their most dramatic from about March to May, while Kafue is best later in the year. In September or October the falls are lower but still worth seeing.
  • Do at least three nights at Busanga and two on the river. Shorter stays waste too much time in transit.
  • Malaria is present. Talk to a travel doctor about prevention, wear long sleeves at dusk and use repellent. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
  • Tsetse flies can be a nuisance in wooded areas. Wear neutral colors, not dark blue or black.
  • Tip guides and camp staff in cash. Your camp will suggest a range.

FAQ

Kafue National Park honeymoon FAQ

Is Kafue National Park good for a first safari?

It can be, but it works best as a second park or for couples who value privacy. Wildlife is spread over a huge area, so sightings take more patience than in smaller parks. Pairing Kafue with South Luangwa or Victoria Falls gives first-timers a strong mix of reliable game and quiet wilderness.

When is the best time to visit the Busanga Plains?

Roughly July to October. The plains flood during the rains and dry out from midyear, opening up for game drives. August and September bring the best mix of wildlife, mild days and cool nights. Most Busanga camps close by November when the rains return and the tracks become impassable.

How do we get to Kafue from the US?

Fly to Lusaka (LUN) with one connection through hubs such as Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Doha or Dubai. From Lusaka, a light-aircraft charter takes you to a park airstrip where your camp picks you up. Some southern lodges can be reached by a long road transfer instead.

How much does a Kafue honeymoon cost?

Expect roughly several hundred to well over a thousand dollars per person per night at the better camps, usually including meals, drinks and activities. Charter flights and international airfare are extra. These are approximate ranges that vary by season and camp, so ask a safari specialist for current quotes.

Is Kafue safe for couples?

The US State Department rates Zambia Level 1, exercise normal precautions. Inside the park, the main risks are wildlife and the sun. Follow your guide's instructions, never walk alone at night in unfenced camps and take malaria prevention seriously. Camps are staffed day and night and handle emergencies with charter evacuations.
