Why Honeymoon on North and Middle Caicos
You come here for space. On a weekday you can walk Bambarra Beach or Whitby for an hour and see no one. The views from the clifftops at Mudjin Harbour are some of the most dramatic in the country.
The islands also show a different side of the Turks and Caicos. People farm, fish and keep goats. Small churches and old plantation ruins line the road. Locals wave at passing cars.
The flip side is limited service. There are few restaurants, no big resorts and not much nightlife. Some beaches have soft sand underfoot and shallow, weedy water rather than the clean swimming of Grace Bay. Treat these islands as a quiet chapter of your honeymoon, not the whole story, unless solitude is what you came for.
When to Go
The best weather runs from December through April, with sunny, dry days, temperatures in the low 80s Fahrenheit and comfortable evenings. This is also the busiest time on Providenciales, which makes the empty beaches here feel even more welcome.
May and June bring warmer water and more humidity with lower prices. Mosquitoes and sand flies become more noticeable after rain, especially on North Caicos with its ponds and greenery.
August through October is the peak of hurricane season. Ferry schedules may be cut back and some small businesses close for part of the fall. If you travel then, keep bookings flexible and buy insurance that covers named storms. Flamingos are usually present on Flamingo Pond year round, though numbers vary.
Where to Stay
Lodging is small scale. On Middle Caicos, Blue Horizon Resort has cottages along the clifftops above Mudjin Harbour, with sea views and access to the beach below. It is a good choice for couples who want the scenery right outside the door.
On North Caicos, Whitby Beach has a few small hotels and rental villas, many with direct beach access. Private villas scattered around the island give you a kitchen and plenty of privacy. Expect island style rather than luxury resort polish, with simple decor and limited dining.
Rates are generally lower than on Grace Bay, often roughly $250 to $600 a night for a villa or cottage in high season, as an approximate guide. Many couples prefer to stay on Provo and visit for a day, which is easy with the ferry.
Romantic Things to Do
Start at Mudjin Harbour. Walk the clifftop path for views over Dragon Cay, then take the steps down to the beach. At low tide you can find a small hidden beach tucked behind the rocks. Swim only when the sea is calm, since currents can be strong.
Follow part of the Crossing Place Trail, an old coastal path along the north shore of Middle Caicos. Book a guided tour of the Conch Bar Caves, a large limestone cave system with bats, stalactites and traces of Lucayan history.
On North Caicos, look for flamingos at Flamingo Pond, explore the ruins of Wade's Green Plantation and snorkel near Three Mary Cays, off Whitby. Stop at Bambarra Beach on Middle Caicos for a picnic, then drive back across the causeway at sunset.
Getting There and Around
Fly into Providenciales International Airport (PLS), which has nonstops from Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, New York, Newark and Philadelphia, among others. Then take a taxi to the ferry dock at Walkin Marina in the Leeward area, about 15 minutes from Grace Bay.
The passenger ferry to Sandy Point on North Caicos runs several times a day and takes about 30 minutes. Check the current timetable and book ahead in high season. Some day tours bundle the ferry, a rental car and a map.
Once you arrive, you need a car. Rental agents meet the ferry at Sandy Point. Driving is on the left, roads are quiet and the causeway to Middle Caicos is straightforward. Gas stations are few, so fill up early. Allow about 45 minutes to drive from the ferry dock to Mudjin Harbour.
Food and Drink
Dining here is casual and limited, so plan ahead. A few local restaurants and beach bars serve cracked conch, grilled snapper, lobster in season and peas and rice. Several open only for lunch or keep irregular hours. Ask your host or the rental agent what is open that day.
On Middle Caicos, the restaurant at Blue Horizon Resort overlooks Mudjin Harbour and is a natural lunch stop on a day trip. On North Caicos, roadside stands sometimes sell fresh fruit and homemade goods.
If you are staying in a villa, shop on Provo before taking the ferry. Bring wine, snacks and breakfast supplies. Grocery stores on the islands are small and stock can be limited.
Honeymoon Tips
- Take an early ferry. You will have more time on the beaches and avoid driving back in the dark.
- Pack water, snacks, sunscreen and hats. Services are sparse.
- Wear sturdy shoes for the Mudjin Harbour cliffs and the cave tour.
- Bring strong insect repellent, especially at dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
- Check tide times before visiting the hidden beach at Mudjin Harbour.
- Keep cash for small restaurants and fuel.
- If you stay several nights, split the trip with Grace Bay for restaurants and easy swimming.
