The short answer

Zurich is the easiest start or finish to a Swiss honeymoon, with nonstop US flights and trains everywhere. Spend one or two nights for the old town, Chagall windows, lake and river swimming in summer and a classic dinner at Kronenhalle. May through September and December are the best times. It is expensive: good central doubles run roughly CHF 300–700 a night, approximate.

Best for
  • Arrival or departure nights
  • Food, art and city lovers
  • A summer swim in the river
Maybe skip it if
  • You have under a week in Switzerland
  • You want mountain scenery from your hotel

Zurich is where most Swiss honeymoons start and a night or two here is worth planning rather than rushing past. Switzerland's largest city sits at the northern tip of Lake Zurich, where the Limmat River flows out between medieval guild houses and church spires. Zurich Airport (ZRH) is only about 12 minutes away by train, so you can land, drop your bags and be strolling the old town by late morning.

The city is clean, efficient and more relaxed than its banking reputation suggests. In summer, locals swim in the lake and river at wooden bathhouses that turn into bars at night. In winter, the old town glows with Christmas markets and fondue restaurants.

For couples, Zurich works as a soft landing after the overnight flight or a stylish final night before flying home. It also offers good art, excellent restaurants and easy day trips. Be ready for high prices: this is one of the most expensive cities in the world.

Why Honeymoon in Zurich

Zurich makes the logistics of a Swiss honeymoon easy and adds real pleasures of its own. The airport is close, trains leave for every corner of the country from Zurich HB and the city is calm enough to recover from jet lag on a lakeside bench.

The old town on both banks of the Limmat is compact and charming, with the Grossmünster's twin towers, the Fraumünster's stained glass by Marc Chagall and quiet squares like Lindenhof above the river. The Kunsthaus holds one of the strongest art collections in Switzerland.

What sets Zurich apart is its summer water culture. The lake and river are clean enough to swim in and the city's historic bathhouses, or Badis, are one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a warm afternoon. Two days here feels like a holiday, not a layover.

When to Go

May through September is the best time. Summer days are warm, the lake boats run frequently, the Badis are open and café terraces fill along the water. July and August are the warmest months, with water temperatures pleasant for swimming.

Spring brings blossoms and the Sechseläuten festival in April, when guild members parade and burn a snowman effigy to predict the summer. Autumn is crisp and colorful, good for walks on the Uetliberg.

From late November through December, Christmas markets appear at the main station and in the old town and the lights along Bahnhofstrasse make evening walks festive. January and February are cold and often gray, though Zurich can serve as a base for day trips to ski areas. The city's museums and restaurants make it enjoyable in any weather.

Where to Stay

Lakeside and old town hotels make the most of a short stay. Baur au Lac, set in its own park where the lake meets the Schanzengraben canal, is Zurich's classic grand hotel. The Storchen sits right on the Limmat in the old town, with a terrace over the river and views of the church towers.

The Dolder Grand, on a wooded hill above the city, is a turreted resort with a large spa, worth it if you want views and space. The Widder Hotel combines several medieval houses in the old town with modern design.

For lower prices, look at boutique hotels in the Niederdorf area or the trendy Kreis 4 and 5 districts. Expect roughly CHF 300–700 a night for a good central double and much more at the top hotels, approximate.

Romantic Things to Do

Swim at a Badi. The Flussbad Oberer Letten on the Limmat is a local favorite and the lakeside Seebad Utoquai and Seebad Enge have wooden decks, saunas and drinks. Some Badis host bars and evening events in summer.

Visit the Fraumünster to see Chagall's five stained-glass windows, then walk to Lindenhof for the view across the river to the Grossmünster.

Ride the train up the Uetliberg, the city's local mountain, for sunset over the lake and, on clear days, the Alps.

Take a lake boat to Rapperswil, a small town with a castle and rose gardens, or ride the train to the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen, the largest waterfall in Europe by volume. For a quieter evening, stroll the lakeside promenade from Bellevue toward Zürichhorn and its gardens.

Getting There and Around

Zurich Airport (ZRH) has nonstops from many US cities, including New York, Newark, Boston, Washington, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles and San Francisco, many on SWISS. Expect about 7.5 to 8.5 hours overnight from the East Coast.

Trains from the airport station reach Zurich HB in about 12 minutes. From there, direct trains go to Lucerne in under an hour, Bern in about an hour and the mountain regions in two to three hours.

In the city, trams and buses run frequently. Most visitors find the center easy on foot. If you plan to travel around Switzerland by rail, compare a Swiss Travel Pass or a Half Fare Card with individual tickets, since one may cover city transport and lake boats too.

You don't need a car in Zurich and parking is expensive.

Food and Drink

Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, thin strips of veal in a creamy mushroom sauce with crisp rösti, is the city's signature dish. Kronenhalle, a wood-paneled restaurant with original paintings by artists like Chagall and Picasso on the walls, is the classic place to try it.

For fondue and raclette, old guild-house restaurants in the old town serve them in cozy surroundings. Zeughauskeller, in a former armory, is a lively spot for sausages and beer.

Sprüngli on Paradeplatz is known for its Luxemburgerli, small macarons and for chocolates you can take home as a gift.

Newer restaurants in Kreis 4 and 5 serve everything from Lebanese to tasting menus. Rooftop and lakeside bars stay busy in summer. Tap water and the public fountains are drinkable, which saves money in an expensive city.

Honeymoon Tips

Budget for high prices. A casual lunch can easily cost CHF 30 per person and dinners at good restaurants add up quickly, approximate. Picnics from supermarkets like Coop or Migros by the lake are a local habit and a great way to eat well for less.

Pack swimwear even for a short summer stay. Many Badis rent towels and the river current at the Letten is strong, so follow local signs.

Take advantage of the trains. A short stay in Zurich followed by Lucerne, the Jungfrau Region or Zermatt is easy without a car.

If you arrive jet-lagged, plan a gentle first day: a lake cruise, a Badi or a walk through the old town, then an early dinner. Mention your honeymoon when booking hotels and restaurants; staff are often happy to add a small touch.
