The Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is the classic grand hotel of Interlaken and the most comfortable base for exploring the Jungfrau Region by train. It stands on the Höheweg, the town's main promenade, looking across the open Höhematte meadow to the snowy Jungfrau. The hotel calls itself the grande dame of Swiss luxury hotels. With 216 rooms, almost half of them junior suites or suites, it has the scale and polish to match.

It suits couples who want to do day trips into the mountains and come back to real comfort each evening. The spa is the headline at about 5,500 square meters. It has an indoor pool modeled on Roman baths, an outdoor brine pool with mountain views and a full menu of treatments. Interlaken Ost station is a walk away, which makes the Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen easy.

The tradeoff is that Interlaken itself is a busy, flat town and not the prettiest place to wake up. Couples who want a cliff-edge village view should look at Wengen or Mürren. Couples who want the grand hotel experience with easy logistics will be happy here.

Highlights at a glance

  • Jungfrau views across the Höhematte meadow
  • Spa Nescens of about 5,500 square meters
  • 216 rooms, nearly half junior suites or suites
  • Radius fine dining with local produce
  • Short walk to Interlaken stations

Why Couples Love the Victoria-Jungfrau

It is a proper grand hotel, with high ceilings, chandeliers, long corridors and staff who know what they are doing. Afternoon tea, a drink on the Victoria Bar terrace and a long dinner are part of the stay. After a cold day at 11,000 feet, returning to this much comfort feels like a reward.

The view from the front is the other draw. The Höhematte is kept open by law, so nothing blocks the line of sight to the Jungfrau. On clear evenings the peak glows pink after the town has gone into shadow. Book a Jungfrau-view room to watch it from bed.

The location makes every day trip simple. You can walk to the station, take a boat on Lake Thun or Lake Brienz, or ride the train up to the mountain villages. You come back without moving your luggage once, which many couples value on a multi-stop Switzerland trip.

Rooms and Suites to Book

The hotel offers 12 room types in three groups: double rooms, junior suites and suites. Superior and Deluxe doubles are the entry rooms. Junior suites come in Superior, Deluxe and Nescens versions. The suites range from Superior and Deluxe to duplex suites, the Premium Suite, the Yash Chopra Suite and the Tower Suite.

For a honeymoon, the deciding factor is the view. Book a room that faces the Jungfrau across the Höhematte. Rooms on the other side look over town or the gardens. A Deluxe Junior Suite with a Jungfrau view gives you space and the classic picture without the price of a full suite.

The Yash Chopra Suite honors the Bollywood director who filmed in the area and loved the hotel. It is a fun splurge. The Tower Suite is the most dramatic room in the building. Ask for an upgrade when you mention your honeymoon, especially outside peak summer.

Food, Drink and the Spa

The fine-dining room is Radius by Stefan Beer, which builds its menus from ingredients sourced within about 50 kilometers. La Terrasse Brasserie serves French classics, Sapori is an Italian trattoria with pizza and the Victoria Bar has a terrace facing the Jungfrau. There is also afternoon tea and a Sunday brunch.

Spa Nescens covers about 5,500 square meters. It has an indoor pool styled after Roman baths, an outdoor pool, an outdoor brine bath, open-air whirlpools and a sauna and steam area. Treatments run from massages to longer wellness programs. Spa and sauna hours are generally 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., so an evening soak after a mountain day is easy.

A private spa option is available for couples who want the space to themselves. Book it in advance during busy weeks.

Things to Do

The Jungfrau Region is on your doorstep.

  • Jungfraujoch: trains climb to Europe's highest railway station at about 11,330 feet, with glacier views. Go early on a clear day and take it slowly at altitude.
  • Lauterbrunnen Valley: waterfalls drop off the cliffs, including Staubbach Falls in the village.
  • Grindelwald First: hike to Lake Bachalpsee for reflections of the peaks.
  • Schilthorn: a revolving summit restaurant above Mürren.
  • Lake Brienz: take a boat to the historic Giessbach funicular and waterfall.

Check the mountain webcams before buying tickets. Cloud can hide the views completely. If one of you wants adventure and the other wants an easy day, Interlaken offers both, from paragliding to a lake cruise.

Getting There

Interlaken is about two hours by train from Zurich Airport (ZRH), usually with one change in Bern or Spiez. From Geneva (GVA) it is roughly three hours. Trains arrive at Interlaken West or Interlaken Ost. The hotel sits on the Höheweg between the two, a short walk or taxi ride from either.

By car, Zurich is about two hours away. The hotel has underground parking, but you will rarely need a car once you arrive. Mountain trains, cable cars and lake boats cover almost everything.

A Swiss Travel Pass or a regional Jungfrau pass can save money if you plan several excursions. Prices for the higher summits are steep, so compare options before you go.

Is It Worth It?

Yes, if you want a classic grand hotel and a large spa with easy access to the mountains. Rates are not published on the main page and vary widely. Expect roughly $650 a night and up for two in an entry double, approximate, with suites and peak summer dates much higher.

The main reason to pick elsewhere is scenery from the room. Interlaken is flat and busy. Even the best view here is across a town meadow. Couples who want to wake up on a cliff above the valley should stay in Wengen or Mürren. Those who want a lake setting might prefer the Grandhotel Giessbach on Lake Brienz. A popular plan is to split the stay: two nights here for the spa and logistics, then two in a car-free village for the views.

Insider tips

  1. Pay for a Jungfrau-view room; the other side faces town.
  2. Check the summit webcams before buying Jungfraujoch tickets.
  3. Book the private spa for a couples evening during busy weeks.
  4. Split your stay with two nights in Wengen or Mürren for village views.

FAQ

Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa questions, answered

Which room should we book at the Victoria-Jungfrau?

Book a room facing the Jungfrau across the Höhematte. A Deluxe Junior Suite with that view is a good honeymoon choice. Rooms on the other side look over town or gardens, which saves money but misses the main reason to stay in a grand hotel on the Höheweg.

How big is the spa at the Victoria-Jungfrau?

Spa Nescens covers about 5,500 square meters. It has an indoor pool styled like Roman baths, an outdoor pool, an outdoor brine bath, whirlpools, saunas and steam rooms. It also offers massages and longer wellness programs, plus a private spa option for couples.

Is Interlaken a good base for a honeymoon?

It is the most practical base, with trains and boats in every direction. It is not the most scenic place to wake up. Many couples spend a couple of nights here, then move to Wengen, Mürren or Grindelwald for cliff and village views.

How do we get to the Victoria-Jungfrau from Zurich Airport?

Take the train from Zurich Airport (ZRH) to Interlaken, usually with one change in Bern or Spiez. It takes about two hours. The hotel sits between Interlaken West and Ost stations, a short walk or taxi ride from either one.

Is the Jungfraujoch worth it?

On a clear day, yes. The train climbs to about 11,330 feet with glacier views. It is expensive and the altitude can cause headaches, so go early, move slowly and drink water. On a cloudy day, pick a lower outing like Grindelwald First or the Lauterbrunnen waterfalls instead.
