Hotel Sacher Wien

Vienna's grand hotel across from the State Opera, with cake on the side

Hotel Sacher Wien is the classic choice for a Vienna honeymoon: a family-owned grand hotel that has stood across from the State Opera since 1876. Everything that couples come to Vienna for is within a few minutes' walk, from the opera house and the Albertina to St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Hofburg. Come back between sights for a slice of the Original Sacher-Torte, the chocolate cake the hotel made famous, without leaving the building.

The hotel has 152 rooms and suites, redesigned by co-owner Alexandra Winkler with French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. They lean classic Viennese, with rich fabrics, artwork and marble bathrooms, but they are comfortable rather than museum-like. The rooms to book for a honeymoon are those with views over the State Opera, or a suite with a private terrace above the rooftops.

Sacher suits couples who want old-world elegance, a central address and a sense of occasion. It suits those who prefer contemporary design or a quiet residential neighborhood less well, since the area around the opera is busy and the style is unapologetically traditional. Book well ahead for ball season and Christmas, when the hotel is at its most festive.

Why Couples Love Hotel Sacher

Sacher is part of Vienna's story. For well over a century it has hosted musicians, royalty and generations of visitors heading to the opera. That history shows in every corridor. Yet the atmosphere is welcoming rather than stiff, thanks to staff who manage formality with warmth.

Location is the other great strength. You can walk out of the hotel and be at the State Opera's entrance in a minute, watch a performance and be back in your room ten minutes after the curtain falls. Couples love the rhythm this allows: museums in the morning, coffee and cake in the afternoon, a nap and then a concert or opera at night. On a winter evening, the hotel's red velvet and chandeliers make it feel like a stage set of its own, which is exactly what many people picture when they imagine a romantic trip to Vienna.

Rooms and Suites to Book

The room list is long, but a few categories stand out.

  • Deluxe Rooms, at 27 to 39 square meters, are elegant and comfortable, but most face side streets or the courtyard.
  • Deluxe Rooms with View look out toward the State Opera, which is worth the step up for a honeymoon.
  • Junior Suites and Junior Suites with View add a sitting area for longer stays.
  • Signature Suites, including the Signature Suite with Terrace, give you a private outdoor space with city views.
  • The Opera Penthouse Suite, at 180 square meters, has a private terrace over the rooftops and is the hotel's showpiece.
  • Themed suites such as the Wiener Philharmoniker Suite and the Madame Butterfly Suite suit music lovers.

If you can stretch the budget, a room or suite with an opera view is the one to choose. Request a higher floor for quieter nights and better outlooks.

Food, Drink and the Spa

Dining at Sacher is a series of Viennese rituals. Café Sacher Wien is where you sample the Original Sacher-Torte with a dollop of unsweetened whipped cream and a Melange, ideally at a quiet hour before the line forms outside. Café Bel Étage upstairs is calmer, with a lighter crowd. Restaurant Rote Bar, open daily from noon until midnight, serves classic Austrian dishes such as Tafelspitz in a red-walled dining room that is popular before and after the opera. Restaurant Grüne Bar offers a more refined menu for a special dinner.

The Blaue Bar is the hotel's cocktail lounge, open until late. It is a good place for a nightcap after a performance. The Sacher Boutique Spa is small but welcome after long days on your feet, with massages, beauty treatments, a hammam, a sauna and a fitness room.

Things to Do

Start with the State Opera across the street. Performances run most nights of the season and the hotel can help with tickets. Standing-room places are an affordable adventure if a full show is sold out. The Albertina, next door, holds a major art collection, while the Upper Belvedere is a short tram ride away for Klimt's The Kiss.

Walk the Ringstrasse to see the Hofburg, the parliament and the great museums, or wander the old town's lanes to St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Graben. Spend an afternoon at Schönbrunn Palace and climb to the Gloriette for the view. In the evening, take a tram out to Grinzing or Nussdorf for a wine tavern supper among the vineyards. Couples who like music can book a concert at the Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic, a short walk from the hotel.

Getting There

Vienna International Airport (VIE) is about 25 to 30 minutes from the hotel by car. Alternatively, the City Airport Train takes 16 minutes to Wien Mitte station, from where a taxi to the hotel is quick. The hotel can arrange a private car if you prefer to be met on arrival.

Once in Vienna, you will not need a car. Karlsplatz and Oper stations on the U1 and U4 lines are close by and Stephansplatz on the U3 is a short walk. Trams circle the Ringstrasse every few minutes. Taxis are easy to find late at night outside the opera.

Vienna works well as the first stop of an Austrian honeymoon. Fast trains run to Salzburg in around two and a half hours. Kitzbühel or the lakes are an easy onward trip from there.

Is It Worth It?

Sacher is one of the most expensive hotels in Vienna, so plan accordingly. Expect entry rooms to start at roughly USD 600 to 800 a night for two, with opera-view rooms and suites costing considerably more. Treat these figures as approximate, since prices climb during ball season, the Christmas markets and major opera premieres.

You pay for history, location and a sense of occasion that few hotels can match. For couples who love opera, music or classic grand hotels, that is money well spent. Pick elsewhere if you prefer contemporary design, a quieter neighborhood or a bigger spa. Rosewood Vienna and Park Hyatt Vienna are modern luxury alternatives in the old town, while a boutique hotel in Neubau or Spittelberg gives you a more local base for much less.

Insider tips

  1. Book a Deluxe Room with View or higher if you want to see the State Opera from your window.
  2. Visit Café Sacher early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the queue outside.
  3. Ask the concierge about opera and concert tickets when you book, not when you arrive.
  4. Take home a boxed Sacher-Torte as a gift; it travels well.

FAQ

Hotel Sacher Wien questions, answered

Where is Hotel Sacher Wien located?

The hotel is at Philharmoniker Strasse 4 in the First District (Innere Stadt), directly across from the Vienna State Opera and next to the Albertina museum. St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg and the main shopping streets are within easy walking distance, while Karlsplatz and Stephansplatz stations are close by for the rest of the city.

Which rooms have opera views?

Deluxe Rooms with View, Junior Suites with View, Signature Suites with View and the Grand Signature Suite with View face toward the State Opera. The Opera Penthouse Suite has a private terrace with city views. Standard Deluxe Rooms usually face side streets or the courtyard, which is quieter but less dramatic.

Can we eat the Original Sacher-Torte at the hotel?

Yes. The Original Sacher-Torte is served in Café Sacher Wien and Café Bel Étage, as well as in the hotel's restaurants. The café often has a line outside in peak season, so go early in the morning or later in the evening. You can also buy boxed cakes to take home as gifts.

Does Hotel Sacher have a spa?

Yes. The Sacher Boutique Spa offers massages, beauty treatments and spa rituals, with a hammam, a sauna and a fitness room. It is smaller than a resort spa, but it is a welcome way to recover after a long day of walking around museums and palaces. Book treatments in advance during busy periods.

When is the best time to stay?

Spring and early autumn offer mild weather and the opera season in full swing. December brings Christmas markets and festive decorations, while January and February are ball season, which is a memorable time for couples who love to dance. Summer is warm and busy with visitors, but the State Opera takes a break in July and August.
