  • You want warm water
  • You are traveling outside summer

Gotland is Sweden's largest island, a flat limestone slab in the Baltic Sea about three hours by ferry from the Stockholm area. Its capital, Visby, is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in northern Europe. A stone wall about 3.4 kilometers long still wraps around the old town, which is listed by UNESCO as the Hanseatic Town of Visby. Inside are cobbled lanes, merchant houses, roses climbing over garden walls and the roofless ruins of medieval churches.

Beyond the town, the island is quiet farmland, pine forest and long beaches. On the northern island of Fårö, reached by a short free ferry, wind and waves have carved limestone into sea stacks called raukar. Film director Ingmar Bergman lived and filmed there for decades.

Gotland is where Swedes go for summer: light evenings, swimming, long lunches and cycling. For couples, it is a relaxed island break with a romantic town at its center and plenty of space to slow down. It is livelier in July and calmer in June and late August.

Why Honeymoon on Gotland

Visby gives the trip a romantic core. Walking the ramparts at sunset, eating in a courtyard below a ruined church and wandering lanes lined with hollyhocks feels very far from everyday life.

The rest of the island balances that with simple pleasures. You can rent bikes and ride between villages with medieval churches, swim at long sandy beaches like Tofta and Sudersand or stand among the strange raukar on Fårö's rocky shore.

It also mixes well with a Stockholm stay. A few nights in the city and the archipelago, then a ferry or short flight to Gotland, gives you two very different sides of Swedish summer on one honeymoon.

When to Go

June to August is the season. Gotland is one of Sweden's sunniest areas in summer, with highs typically in the upper 60s to low 70s°F and very long days.

July is peak. Swedish vacations fill the island, Visby's bars and restaurants buzz and prices rise. Almedalen Week, a political festival, packs Visby around early summer. In August, Medieval Week brings costumes, markets and jousting to the old town, which is fun but very busy.

June and late August are quieter and still warm enough for swims on good days. May and September are calmer still, though some restaurants and beach kiosks keep short hours. From October to April, many businesses close and the island turns into a quiet place for locals.

Where to Stay

Stay inside or just outside Visby's walls for at least part of the trip. Small hotels in old merchant houses and guesthouses on cobbled lanes put the ramparts, restaurants and sea promenade within a short walk.

Then consider a few nights in the countryside. Farm stays, cottages and small inns dot the island, especially on the east coast and around Fårö.

Fabriken Furillen, a design hotel in a former limestone works on the small island of Furillen on the northeast coast, is known for its stark, minimalist setting and is a favorite with couples who like something different.

Book early for July. Expect roughly $150–$350 a night for a good double in summer, approximate, with higher prices during festival weeks.

Romantic Things to Do

  • Walk the Visby wall at sunset and climb up to a viewpoint on the ramparts behind the cathedral.
  • Have dinner in one of the gardens or courtyards set among Visby's church ruins.
  • Take the free car ferry from Fårösund to Fårö and walk among the raukar at Langhammars and Digerhuvud.
  • Swim at Sudersand on Fårö or Tofta on the west coast.
  • Rent bikes and follow quiet roads between country churches with medieval paintings.
  • Visit the Bergman Center on Fårö if either of you loves film.
  • Explore the Lummelunda caves on a hot day.

Getting There and Around

From the US, fly to Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), which has nonstop service from Newark and Chicago. Then either fly to Visby (VBY) in under an hour or take the train or bus to Nynäshamn for the ferry, which takes about three hours. Ferries also leave from Oskarshamn, further south.

Visby Airport is about 10 minutes from the old town. The old town is easily walkable.

To explore the island, rent a car or bikes. Gotland is fairly flat and quiet. Cycling is popular, though distances are long if you want to see the far north and south. Book ferry tickets with a car early for July, as they sell out.

Food and Drink

Gotland has a strong food identity. Try saffranspannkaka, a saffron rice pudding cake served with dewberry jam and cream. Gotland lamb is prized. The island is known for truffles in autumn.

Summer means fresh fish, smoked fish and Baltic herring, plus local strawberries and new potatoes. Visby has a lively restaurant scene in summer with casual seaside bars, wine bars and more refined dining.

Outside Visby, look for farm cafes and small restaurants in villages; many are summer-only. Strong alcohol is sold only at Systembolaget state stores. Expect dinner for two with drinks around $100–$200, approximate.

Honeymoon Tips

Plan at least four nights to split time between Visby and the countryside.

Check festival dates before booking. Almedalen Week and Medieval Week can push prices up and make Visby crowded, which some couples love and others want to avoid.

Wear comfortable shoes. Visby's cobbles are uneven and many lanes are steep.

Bring layers. Even in summer, evenings by the sea can be cool and windy.

If you are bringing a rental car on the ferry, reserve well in advance. Otherwise, rent a car on the island.

Respect the raukar. They are fragile, so do not climb on them.
