The short answer

Mariehamn is a quiet Baltic harbor town best used for a night or two at the start of an Åland stay, before moving out to a seaside cabin with its own sauna. Come June through August for long light evenings, warm swimming rocks and every museum and boat tour open; late May and early September are calmer, with lower rates. Hotel Arkipelag and Park Alandia are the easy town picks. Arrive by ferry from Stockholm through the archipelago. Don't miss cycling out to Kastelholm for dinner at Smakbyn.

Best for
  • Couples who love cycling and saunas
  • A slow add-on to Stockholm or Helsinki
  • Fans of maritime history
Maybe skip it if
  • You want warm-water beaches
  • You can only travel October to April

Mariehamn is the capital and only real town of the Åland Islands, a Swedish-speaking autonomous region of Finland in the middle of the Baltic. About 12,000 people live here, on a narrow peninsula with a harbor on each side. The big ferries from Stockholm and Finland dock in the west. Small boats, a boatbuilding quarter and the guest marina fill the east.

The town was founded in 1861 and named for a Russian empress. Today it feels Scandinavian to the core. Expect wooden villas, a broad avenue lined with lime trees, cafes with outdoor tables and a sailing ship moored as a museum. It is small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes and calm enough to hear the gulls from your hotel.

For couples, Mariehamn works best as the start of an Åland stay. Spend a night or two enjoying the harbors and restaurants, then head out by bike or car to a cottage by the sea.

Why Honeymoon in Mariehamn

Mariehamn offers easy comfort with the archipelago on the doorstep. You can spend the morning at a maritime museum, cycle along the shore in the afternoon and still be back for an early sauna before dinner.

It is a town with a seafaring soul. Åland once had one of the largest fleets of deep-sea sailing ships in the world. The Pommern, a four-masted barque built in 1903, is the reminder floating in the West Harbor. Climbing below decks gives you a feel for how hard and long those voyages were.

Mariehamn is also simply relaxed. There are no tourist crowds outside ferry arrivals, no dress codes and little traffic. Summer nights stay light well past 10 p.m., which leaves time for long walks along the water after dinner.

When to Go

Come between June and August. Highs reach the upper 60s°F in July, swimming spots on the rocks warm up and every museum, cafe and boat tour is open. Midsummer in late June brings decorated poles, music and dancing across the islands. Locals often head to the countryside, so book that weekend early.

Late May and the first half of September are pleasant and quieter, with good cycling weather and lower hotel rates. September is apple season. A local harvest festival opens farms and kitchens to visitors.

From October to April, Mariehamn is dark and windy, with many seasonal places closed. A winter weekend can still be cozy with spa time and good meals, but it is not the version of Åland most couples picture.

Where to Stay

Stay near the West Harbor to be close to the ferries, the Pommern and the town center. Hotel Arkipelag, on the waterfront, is a long-standing choice with a pool and views over the water. Park Alandia sits on the esplanade within easy walking distance of everything.

If you want more space, rent a holiday apartment in one of the wooden villas around the center. Many come with bikes or have rental shops nearby.

For the rest of your stay, consider moving outside town. Seaside cabins with private saunas and resort-style hotels with sea views are scattered across the main island and the north. Splitting your time between town and countryside gives the trip both convenience and solitude.

Romantic Things to Do

Start with the Pommern and the Åland Maritime Museum next door. Together they tell the story of the islands' sailing fleet better than any guidebook.

Walk the esplanade under the lime trees from the West Harbor to the East Harbor. There, the maritime quarter has a working boatyard, a smithy and small cafes on the water.

Rent bikes and ride about 13 miles to Kastelholm, a medieval castle by a sheltered inlet. Next door is Jan Karlsgården, an open-air museum of old farm buildings. Stay for dinner at Smakbyn, the restaurant and distillery across the road.

On warm evenings, find a flat granite rock on the shore, swim and watch the sun go down slowly. Sea kayaking and short boat trips into the archipelago are also easy to arrange from town.

Getting There and Around

From the US, fly to Stockholm or Helsinki. From Stockholm, large ferries run to Mariehamn in several hours, often as overnight cruises. Faster crossings leave from Kapellskär, about an hour's drive north of the city. From Finland, ferries come from Turku and Helsinki. Mariehamn Airport, just north of town, has short flights from Helsinki, Turku and Stockholm.

The town itself is easily walkable. For the rest of Åland, bikes are the classic choice. Marked routes, flat roads and bike ferries in summer make cycling a pleasure.

A rental car is useful if you plan to stay in the countryside or move between several islands. Book cars and ferry car spaces early for July.

Food and Drink

Åland food is simple and seasonal. Fish comes from the surrounding sea, especially perch, pikeperch and Baltic herring. The islands grow apples, potatoes and vegetables in fields fenced by stone walls.

Try the Åland pancake, a dense baked semolina pudding served with prune cream and whipped cream. Order a slice of sweet black bread with smoked fish or cheese at lunch. Stallhagen beer is brewed on the main island and found in most bars.

In town, Indigo is a long-running choice for a celebration dinner. Pub Niska serves the thin Åland flatbread pizzas created by chef Michael Björklund. Outside town, Smakbyn is the destination meal, combining a kitchen, distillery and shop. Ask about apple brandy and cider made on the islands.

Honeymoon Tips

Arrive by ferry from Stockholm at least once. Watching the archipelago slide past from the deck is part of the experience. The evening crossing feels like a mini cruise.

Pack swimwear even if the water sounds cold. A sauna followed by a quick dip in the Baltic is the classic Nordic routine.

Bring layers. Even in July, a sea breeze can make evenings chilly.

Åland has a lot of ticks in summer. Wear long trousers in tall grass and check each other after country walks.

Remember that Åland is outside the EU tax area. If you buy cases of wine or spirits on the ferry, check the customs limits for your next stop.

Finally, slow down. Mariehamn rewards couples who linger over coffee and take the long way home on the bike path.

FAQ

Mariehamn honeymoon FAQ

How do we get to Mariehamn from Stockholm?

Large ferries sail from Stockholm to Mariehamn in several hours and often run as evening or overnight cruises. For a shorter crossing, drive or take a bus to Kapellskär and board a ferry there. Flights from Stockholm to Mariehamn are also available and take well under an hour.

Is Mariehamn worth more than a day trip?

Yes. Many ferry passengers only stop briefly, but staying overnight lets you enjoy the quiet harbors once day crowds leave. Two nights in town plus three or four in the countryside give you the best of Åland without constantly moving.

Do people in Mariehamn speak English?

Nearly everyone does, usually fluently. Swedish is the official language and the one you will see on signs and menus. Finnish is rarely used. A simple hej and tack for hello and thank you are always appreciated, but you will not have trouble communicating in English.

What is the weather like in Mariehamn in summer?

Mild and often sunny. July highs typically reach the upper 60s°F, with cooler evenings and occasional showers. The sea warms slowly, so swimming is brisk even in midsummer. Days are very long in June and July, with light well into the evening.

Can we use dollars or Swedish kronor in Mariehamn?

The currency is the euro and cards are accepted almost everywhere. Swedish kronor are used on the ferries but rarely in town. Dollars are not accepted. Use a card without foreign transaction fees and keep a few euros for small cafes or market stalls.
