Parador de Ronda is the hotel to book if you want to wake up above the gorge with Ronda's famous bridge just outside. It occupies the town's former town hall and neighboring buildings, right on the edge of the El Tajo gorge and it is the building closest to the Puente Nuevo, the 18th-century bridge that spans the chasm. Paradores are Spain's state-run chain of historic hotels and this one has one of the most dramatic positions in the network.

The hotel has 78 rooms. For a honeymoon, the room you book matters: ask for one with a gorge-facing balcony, or a duplex with its own rooftop terrace. The pool, with sun loungers on a lawn, looks over the gorge and the bridge and breakfast is served on a terrace above the drop. Two restaurants serve Andalusian food with views over the countryside.

Ronda is busy with day-trippers from the coast, but by evening the old town empties and the bridge glows under lights. Couples who want a good-value base with a sensational view will love it. Those who want modern luxury should look elsewhere.

Highlights at a glance

  • Right beside the Puente Nuevo on the edge of the El Tajo gorge
  • 78 rooms, including duplexes with private rooftop terraces
  • Outdoor pool with views of the gorge and bridge
  • Breakfast on a terrace above the gorge
  • Good value for a spectacular location

Why Couples Love the Parador de Ronda

The location is everything. Ronda sits on a plateau split by the El Tajo gorge, more than 100 meters deep and the Puente Nuevo bridges the two halves of the town. The Parador stands at the edge of the cliff beside the bridge, so the views from its terraces and many rooms are among the most dramatic in Spain.

The building mixes old and new, with stone archways leading to a contemporary entrance and modern art inside. It is comfortable rather than lavish. Some rooms and bathrooms feel dated, though renovations have been improving them.

What makes it special for a honeymoon is the evening. When the tour buses leave, Ronda becomes quiet and you can walk across the bridge at dusk, look down into the lit gorge and stroll to dinner in the old town. Waking up to mist in the valley below is a memory that lasts.

Rooms to Book

With 78 rooms, the Parador has a range of options and the view is the deciding factor.

  • Rooms with gorge-facing balconies are the priority for a honeymoon. Ask for one specifically when you book and again at check-in.
  • Corner rooms often have views in two directions.
  • Duplex rooms have a private rooftop terrace, a romantic place for a drink at sunset.
  • Bi-level suites have separate living and sleeping areas.

Standard rooms with town views cost less but lose the reason to stay here. Rooms have hardwood floors and simple, stylish decor. Prices vary widely by season and view, from about $120 to over $500 a night on booking sites. Spring and autumn are the most popular times, so book early. Paradores often offer discounts for advance booking and for travelers over a certain age, so compare rates on the official site.

Food and Drink

The Parador has two restaurants, both serving regional cuisine with views over the landscape and both with a full bar and an extensive wine list. The main Restaurante Parador de Ronda groups its dishes by region. El Manzel de Ronda is more casual.

Breakfast is a buffet of Spanish and international dishes, served on a terrace overlooking the gorge. Even if you eat elsewhere for dinner, take your time over breakfast here.

Ronda has a strong food scene for a small town. Look for oxtail stew, a local specialty linked to the town's bullfighting history and Iberian pork. The mountains around Ronda produce good wines and several small bodegas offer tastings. Book a table at one of the restaurants with terraces facing the gorge for a sunset dinner. Many restaurants close one day a week, so check before you go.

Things to Do

Start with the bridge. Walk across the Puente Nuevo, then follow the path down into the gorge for views of the bridge from below. The trail starts about five minutes from the Parador.

The Plaza de Toros, one of Spain's oldest bullrings, has a museum and it is a short walk away. The Alameda del Tajo park has viewpoints over the valley and is a good place to watch the sunset. In the old town, La Ciudad, visit the Casa del Rey Moro and its water mine, the 13th-century Arab Baths and the Mondragón Palace.

For a day out, drive through the white villages of the Sierra de Grazalema, such as Grazalema and Zahara de la Sierra, or visit a bodega in the hills. Ronda is also a good stop between Seville, Granada and the Costa del Sol on a road trip through Andalusia.

Getting There

Málaga Airport (AGP) is about 1 hour 30 minutes from Ronda by car and Seville Airport (SVQ) about 1 hour 45 minutes. Both have connections to the US, with seasonal nonstop flights to Málaga on some routes.

A rental car is the easiest way to reach Ronda and explore the surrounding villages. The roads from the coast are winding but scenic. Parking in the old town is limited, so ask the Parador about parking when you book.

Trains connect Ronda with Madrid, Granada and Algeciras, though services are not frequent. Buses run from Málaga, Seville and Marbella. Once in Ronda, everything is walkable and the Parador's position means the bridge, bullring and old town are all within a few minutes. The town is safe at night and walking back across the bridge after dinner is part of the pleasure.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want the view, yes. The Parador de Ronda offers one of the most spectacular hotel settings in Spain at a reasonable price and staying overnight lets you see Ronda at its quietest.

Do not expect luxury. Some rooms feel dated, the pool has no food or drink service and towels are not provided at the pool, so bring your own. If you want boutique style, look at the small hotels in La Ciudad that occupy restored mansions with terraces above the gorge. The Hotel Reina Victoria, on the cliff at the edge of town, is another classic option with gardens facing the mountains.

For a more rural stay, consider the country hotels and cortijos in the valleys around Ronda. One or two nights is enough for most couples, as part of a wider trip through Andalusia.

Insider tips

  1. Request a gorge-facing balcony or a duplex with a rooftop terrace when you book and confirm at check-in.
  2. Walk the path below the bridge early in the morning, before the day-trippers arrive.
  3. Bring your own towels for the pool, which does not provide them.
  4. Compare discounts for advance booking on the official Paradores site.

FAQ

Parador de Ronda questions, answered

How close is the Parador to the Puente Nuevo?

Very close. The Parador is the building nearest the Puente Nuevo, about 25 meters from the bridge, on the edge of the El Tajo gorge. Many rooms and the pool have views of the bridge and the gorge. The old town, bullring and Alameda del Tajo park are all within a few minutes' walk.

Which room should we book?

Book a room with a gorge-facing balcony, or a duplex with a private rooftop terrace. Corner rooms are also recommended for their views. Standard rooms facing the town are cheaper but lack the view that makes the Parador special. Request your preference in writing and confirm it at check-in.

Does the Parador have a pool?

Yes, there is an outdoor pool on a lawn with sun loungers and views of the gorge and Puente Nuevo. Note that towels are not provided at the pool and there is no food or drink service there. Some guests report the pool may close after the summer season, so check if you are visiting in autumn or winter.

Is Ronda worth an overnight stay?

Yes. Most visitors come on day trips from the Costa del Sol, so the town is crowded at midday and quiet in the evening. Staying overnight lets you see the bridge lit at night, walk the gorge path early in the morning and enjoy dinner without the crowds. One or two nights is ideal.

How do we get to Ronda?

The easiest way is by car, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Málaga Airport or 1 hour 45 minutes from Seville Airport. Trains run from Madrid, Granada and Algeciras and buses connect Ronda with Málaga, Seville and Marbella. Once in Ronda, you can walk everywhere from the Parador.
