Union Geiranger Resort & Spa

Four generations of one family, a Japanese hot bath and the fjord out the window

Union Geiranger Resort & Spa is the hotel most couples mean when they talk about staying in Geiranger. Formerly called Hotel Union, it has stood above the village since 1891. The Mjelva family has run it for four generations. It is a big, comfortable hotel rather than a tiny boutique, which turns out to be an advantage here: you get a proper spa, an indoor pool, several restaurants and rooms that look straight down the Geirangerfjord.

For a honeymoon, the draw is the mix of scenery and comfort at a fair price. Entry fjord-view rooms start at roughly $260 a night for two, which is modest by Norwegian standards. Splurge on one of the two Spa Suites and you get a fireplace and a private jacuzzi terrace above the water, or a private sauna, steam bath and mini hamam. Either way, the evenings are what you will remember. The cruise passengers leave, the light turns soft on the cliffs and you walk down from a Japanese hot bath to dinner with the fjord going silver below the windows.

It suits couples who want to hike and drive the mountain roads by day and be looked after at night.

Highlights at a glance

  • Family-run by the Mjelva family since 1891
  • Fjord-view rooms above Geiranger village
  • Union Spa with Japanese hot bath and daily sauna ritual
  • Spa Suites with private jacuzzi terrace or private sauna
  • Veteran Car Garage with historic touring cars

Why Couples Love Union Geiranger

Location does most of the work. The hotel sits on the road that climbs out of Geiranger toward the Eagle Road, high enough to look over the rooftops and down the whole first stretch of the fjord. From a fjord-view room you watch boats slide past the cliffs in the morning and the water go still at night.

The family history gives it a personality that chain hotels lack. Old photographs line the walls and the Veteran Car Garage on site holds historic seven-seater touring cars, the kind that carried the first tourists up these hairpins. A storytelling tour of about 40 minutes explains how Geiranger became a destination at all.

Then there is the practical comfort. After a steep cliff farm hike, a hot bath with a mountain view and a buffet dinner a few steps away feel like exactly the right reward. Couples who stay two or three nights tend to settle into an easy rhythm here.

Rooms and Suites to Book

Book a room with a fjord view. The mountain-view categories are fine, but the reason you come to Geiranger is the water.

  • Union Classic Fjord View (about 25 to 27 square meters) is the value pick, with a double bed, a sofa and the view.
  • Union Deluxe Fjord View with Balcony (33 square meters) adds a private balcony and a bathtub. For most honeymooners this is the sweet spot.
  • Union Junior Suite Fjord View gives you 30 to 40 square meters and a large sitting area.
  • Suite Gamle Union and Suite Flydalsjuvet are 50-square-meter suites with a separate bedroom.
  • The Spa Suite Geirangerfjord has a fireplace, panoramic windows, a private terrace with jacuzzi and direct access to the spa. The Spa Suite Vinje has its own sauna, steam bath and mini hamam.

The Spa Suites cost several times the entry rooms, so save them for a short stay you want to make special.

Food, Drink and the Spa

Union Spa is the hotel's best feature for couples. It runs a sauna ritual each afternoon that is included with spa entry. There is a Japanese hot bath facing the mountains along the fjord, plus a fireside lounge, a library and a quiet room. Treatments include a hot-stone Geirangerfjord Signature massage with a facial, a traditional hamam and Japanese Yumeiho massage. The spa is for guests 18 and over, or 16 with a parent, so it stays calm. Separately, the Union Bad pool area opens from early morning until late evening.

For dinner, Restaurant Fjorden serves an evening buffet and Restaurant Julie offers a more intimate meal. Terrassen, Café Løsta, Raudebuda Café and the Union Bar cover lunches, coffee and a nightcap. The hotel sells a half-board package and a spa package that bundles a room, dinner and spa entry. Both are worth pricing, since eating out in Geiranger is limited once the summer cafés close.

Why guests fall for it

Watching the fjord go quiet after the cruise ships leave
The hot bath after a day of hiking
Balcony rooms looking straight down the water
Warm, long-serving staff
Easy access to Flydalsjuvet and Dalsnibba

Things to Do

The hotel is a good base for everything the fjord offers. Take a fjord boat past the Seven Sisters and the Suitor waterfalls, ideally on an early departure before the larger ships arrive. Hike up to the Skageflå cliff farm for a picnic on a grassy ledge hundreds of feet above the water. Kayak from the village in the still morning hours.

By car, the Flydalsjuvet viewpoint is minutes up the road. Keep climbing to the Geiranger Skywalk on Dalsnibba for an outlook from nearly 5,000 feet, which is at its best in evening light. In the other direction, the Eagle Road switchbacks lead toward Valldal and the Trollstigen road.

Not every day needs effort. One partner can take a long massage while the other walks to a waterfall, then you meet for the afternoon sauna ritual. Mountain roads close in winter and some boat services run only in summer, so plan active days for the warmer months.

Getting There

The nearest airport is Ålesund Airport Vigra (AES), with frequent flights from Oslo. From there, plan on about three hours by car including a short ferry crossing. Driving yourself makes sense, because the best parts of a Geiranger stay are the viewpoints and roads around the village.

In summer you can also arrive by water. The Hurtigruten coastal ships call into Geiranger on some summer itineraries. Local fjord ferries link Geiranger with Hellesylt. Buses run in season but are less flexible.

The hotel is on the main road just above the village center, so you can walk down to the harbor in a few minutes. Walking back up is steeper. In winter, check road conditions before you drive, since the high mountain passes around Geiranger close and the only reliable routes run along the valleys.

Is It Worth It?

For most couples, yes. Union Geiranger gives you a classic fjord view, a genuine spa and family-run service at a price well below what comparable views cost in the Alps. The entry fjord-view rooms are good value at roughly $260 a night. The Deluxe balcony rooms are worth the step up.

It is a large hotel that also hosts conferences, weddings and tour groups, so this is not a retreat. In July and August the lobby and buffet can be busy. If you want true seclusion, look at the architect-designed cabins at Juvet Landscape Hotel in Valldal, about an hour away, or a cabin up the valley at Westerås farm.

If you want comfort, a real spa and a room where the fjord is the first thing you see in the morning, this is the most complete choice in Geiranger itself. Book early, because rooms with the best views go first.

Good to Know

Geiranger is busiest from June to August, when cruise ships anchor in the fjord most days. Plan boat trips and viewpoints for early morning or evening. Use the middle of the day for the spa.

The hotel advertises winter and Christmas stays, but much of the village closes outside summer and some roads shut. If you want the full Geiranger experience of boats, cafés and open mountain roads, come between late May and September.

Dress is relaxed. Pack layers and a waterproof jacket for both of you, because the weather on the fjord changes quickly and evenings are cool even in July. Bring swimwear for the spa. Check spa and pool hours on arrival so you can plan your afternoons around the sauna ritual.

Insider tips

  1. Book the Union Deluxe Fjord View with Balcony; it is the best balance of view and price.
  2. Take the first fjord boat of the day before the larger ships arrive.
  3. Drive up to Dalsnibba around sunset, when the tour buses have gone.
  4. Price the half-board or spa package before booking room only; dining options shrink outside peak summer.

FAQ

Union Geiranger Resort & Spa questions, answered

Is Union Geiranger the same as Hotel Union?

Yes. The hotel long known as Hotel Union Geiranger now uses the name Union Geiranger Resort & Spa. The old address redirects to its new website. It is still owned and run by the Mjelva family, who have operated it for four generations since it opened in 1891 above the village of Geiranger.

Which room has the best fjord view?

Any category with Fjord View in its name faces the water. The Union Deluxe Fjord View with Balcony adds a private balcony. The Spa Suite Geirangerfjord has panoramic windows plus a terrace with its own jacuzzi. Mountain-view rooms are cheaper but miss the main reason to stay here, so we suggest paying the difference.

Can we use the spa if we are not in a spa suite?

Yes. Union Spa is open to hotel guests daily, with treatments booked separately and a sauna ritual included with spa entry each afternoon. The spa has an age limit of 18, or 16 with a parent, which keeps it quiet. The separate Union Bad pool area is open from early morning until late evening.

How do we get to Union Geiranger from the US?

Fly to Oslo, then connect to Ålesund Airport Vigra (AES). From Ålesund, the drive to Geiranger takes about three hours with a short ferry crossing. Renting a car is the easiest option, because the viewpoints and mountain roads around Geiranger are best explored at your own pace, especially early and late in the day.

When is the best time to stay?

Late May through September is the best window, when boats run, mountain roads are open and the waterfalls are full. June has the longest evenings. July and August bring the most cruise traffic, so plan sightseeing for early and late hours. Early autumn is quieter and the light on the cliffs is lovely.
