Gaia Hotel & Reserve is a small, grown-up hotel on the Manuel Antonio hillside, built for couples who want rainforest, a strong spa and a quiet pool more than a beach at the door. It accepts guests aged 13 and over, so there are no small children. With only around 20 rooms it feels intimate and calm.
The hotel sits inside its own protected reserve. Guided walks on the property turn up sloths, monkeys, toucans and frogs, often within sight of the pool. That pool is the hotel's centerpiece, a three-tiered infinity pool that steps down the hillside toward the forest and ocean.
It suits honeymooners who like design, wellness and personal service. The Terra Spa has six treatment rooms, La Luna Restaurant serves fresh, local cooking with views of the rainforest and Pacific and the Skylounge is one of the best places in Manuel Antonio for a sunset cocktail. Gaia scores highly with guests across the major review sites. The beach and the national park are a short drive away; the hotel arranges transport so you can split your days between jungle, sand and spa.

Why Couples Love Gaia
Gaia's small size and age policy create a hush that is rare in busy Manuel Antonio. Days start with birdsong and end with cocktails on the Skylounge as the sun drops into the Pacific.
The private reserve gives the hotel a sense of place. Staff lead guided tours of the protected forest. Wildlife wanders through the grounds. Couples often say they saw more animals at Gaia than on organized tours.
Service is attentive and personal, with staff who remember how you take your coffee. The design is contemporary and clean, letting the green views do the talking. With pools spread across five separate areas, it is easy to find a quiet corner for the afternoon. Guests rate Gaia highly on Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor, which says a lot about consistency.
Rooms and Suites to Book
All accommodation is terraced into the hillside, with forest views.
- Studio Rooms (about 350 square feet) are compact and comfortable for two, the entry level.
- Suites (about 700 square feet) double the space, with room to lounge and a terrace over the forest.
- Loft Suites (about 800 square feet) are split across two levels, which feels more private.
- The Two Bedroom Villa (about 2,000 square feet) suits a celebration with friends or family.
For a honeymoon, book a Suite or a Loft Suite. The extra space makes a real difference when you want to spend a rainy afternoon in your room. The larger terraces give you a better view of the canopy. Ask the hotel which suites have the clearest ocean outlook when you book.
Food, Drink and the Spa
La Luna Restaurant serves fresh, local cuisine on a terrace looking over the rainforest toward the Pacific. Expect Costa Rican fish, tropical fruit and vegetables cooked with care, plus familiar international dishes. Dinner here at sunset is a good first-night plan.
The Gaia Skylounge sits above it, with 360-degree views, cocktails and tapas. It is one of the most romantic spots in Manuel Antonio for a drink at dusk.
Terra Spa is a genuine draw. With six treatment rooms, it is larger than most spas in small Costa Rican hotels and offers massages, body treatments and couples rituals. Book a couples massage for an afternoon in the green season, when rain sweeps in for an hour or two. Gaia does not offer an all-inclusive plan, so budget for meals and drinks.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do
Start with the hotel's guided reserve tour, ideally early in the morning when animals are most active. Then explore further.
- Visit Manuel Antonio National Park at opening time with a certified naturalist guide.
- Swim and sunbathe at Playa Manuel Antonio inside the park, or Playa Biesanz nearby.
- Take a catamaran cruise with snorkeling and dolphin spotting.
- Kayak the mangroves of Damas Island.
- Spend an afternoon moving between the infinity pool tiers.
One partner may want an adventurous zipline or whitewater rafting day while the other stays for the spa. The hotel can arrange both. Watch for rip currents on open beaches. Never feed the monkeys.
Getting There
Fly from San José (SJO) to Quepos La Managua (XQP), a short domestic hop, then drive about 15 minutes to the hotel. The road trip from San José takes about three hours; private transfers can be quoted by the hotel's reservations team. Liberia (LIR) is around five hours away by car.
Taxis and shuttles run up and down the Manuel Antonio road, so you do not need a rental car. Mosquito-borne illnesses, including dengue, occur in Costa Rica, so pack repellent and wear long sleeves at dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Costa Rica before you travel.
Is It Worth It?
For couples who value quiet, wellness and wildlife over beach access, yes. Gaia offers an intimate, polished stay with a spa and pool that outshine many larger hotels, at a price below the top beachfront options.
It is not the hotel for couples who want to walk from their room to the sand. For that, Arenas del Mar is the better choice. Gaia also has many steps and staircases on its hillside site, so it is less suited to anyone with mobility concerns. If you want a livelier atmosphere or a full-service resort with kids' facilities, look elsewhere. Couples who want a calm base with excellent service and a strong spa will find Gaia one of the best-value romantic stays on the Central Pacific coast.
