Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses is the standout honeymoon stay in Kaikōura, the South Island town famous for sperm whales, dusky dolphins and fur seals. Its signature One-Bedroom Tree Houses sit about 10 meters up in a grove of native kānuka and pūriri trees, with a fireplace, a deep soaking bath, a king bed and a private balcony looking toward the Seaward Kaikōura Range on one side and the Pacific on the other.

The lodge is about 12 km north of town on a family-run deer farm with its own olive grove. Every stay includes a three-course dinner and a chef-cooked breakfast, plus the spa pool, sauna and heated mineral pool, a complimentary minibar, a guided nature walk, stargazing and mountain bikes. That makes it closer to a small luxury lodge than a hotel. It also removes most of the evening logistics.

It suits couples who want wildlife by day and a cozy, design-led room by night. Families are welcome in the larger tree house and the Olive House, so it is not kid-free, but the One-Bedroom Tree Houses are clearly built for two. Expect luxury-lodge pricing in New Zealand dollars, with dinner included.

Highlights at a glance

  • Tree houses about 10 meters up in native forest
  • Fireplace, deep soaking bath and balcony in every one-bedroom tree house
  • Three-course dinner and breakfast included
  • Spa pool, sauna and heated mineral pool
  • Mountain and Pacific views from a working deer farm

Why Couples Love Hapuku Lodge

The setting does a lot of the work. Behind the lodge, the Seaward Kaikōura Range rises steeply, often with snow on its peaks into early summer. In front, farmland runs down to a wild stretch of Pacific coast. Few places in New Zealand put mountains and ocean this close together.

The lodge was designed and built by the Wilson family, siblings with a background in architecture and design. The main lodge opened in 2002 and the Tree Houses followed in 2007, with a refurbishment in 2020. Much of the furniture was designed by the family, which gives the place a cohesive, crafted feel.

The working farm adds character. The family farm runs more than 1,500 deer on just under 1,000 acres. An olive grove produces oil for the table in good years. Couples remember watching the light change on the mountains from their balcony, then walking over to dinner as the stars appear.

The Tree Houses and Other Rooms

For a honeymoon, book a One-Bedroom Tree House. Each is raised about 10 meters into the canopy, reached by walkways, with a custom king bed, a deep soaking bath, a walk-in shower, a fireplace, underfloor heating and a private balcony. Views take in both the mountains and the ocean. A smart TV, Wi-Fi and a complimentary minibar stocked with local treats round things out.

The Two-Story Family Tree House has an upper bedroom with the same romantic features plus a lower twin room, which suits families.

In the main lodge, the Lodge Suites are spacious rooms with farm and mountain views. They are a good alternative if heights or stairs are a concern. The Olive House, once the lodge's olive press, is a three-bedroom house for groups.

Ask for a tree house with the best sea view when you book. Plan to light the fire on cool evenings, which in Kaikōura can be most of the year.

Dinner, Breakfast and the Spa

Dinner is included in every stay: a three-course menu each evening, built around seasonal seafood, produce from the lodge garden and New Zealand wines. Kaikōura is known for crayfish (its name in Māori refers to eating crayfish), so look for it on the menu. Breakfast is chef-cooked. Guests praise the home-pressed olive oil and house-baked bread.

Dinner seatings run from about 6pm to 8:30pm between October and April. In winter they finish at 8pm. You can request a preferred time, which is worth doing on days when you plan a late wildlife tour.

All guests can use the spa pool, sauna and heated mineral pool. The lodge also offers spa treatments and yoga. Turndown service happens in the evening. The minibar is included. After dinner, the guided stargazing is a gentle highlight: the skies here are dark. The Southern Cross is easy to find.

Things to Do in Kaikōura

Kaikōura's deep offshore canyon brings marine life close to shore. Wildlife is the reason to come.

  • Whale-watching boat tours look for sperm whales, which can be seen year-round.
  • Dolphin encounters, including swims with dusky dolphins, run in season.
  • Fur seals lounge on the rocks along the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway, a cliff-top loop with ocean views.
  • Whale-watching flights offer a quieter alternative for those who get seasick.

Closer to home, the lodge includes a guided nature walk, mountain bikes and walking trails across the farm. Ask the team about Mount Fyffe and other hikes in the Seaward Kaikōura Range for clear days.

Book boat tours early in your stay, since sea conditions can cancel trips and you will want a backup day. Bring motion-sickness medicine if either of you is prone to it. Pack layers: the weather can shift quickly between sun and wind.

Getting There

Hapuku Lodge is about 12 km north of Kaikōura town on State Highway 1, just past the Hapuku River bridge, on Station Road. From Christchurch International Airport (CHC), the drive takes around two and a half hours. From Blenheim, it is about an hour and a half. From Picton, where the ferry from Wellington arrives, about two and a quarter hours.

The Coastal Pacific train between Christchurch and Picton runs along the coast and stops in Kaikōura. The lodge offers free pickup and drop-off in town for guests arriving by train, plane or bus.

Most couples rent a car, which makes it easy to reach wildlife tours and continue along the coast to Marlborough wine country or south toward Hanmer Springs. The coastal highway is scenic and well used. Check current conditions before you set off, as road works and weather can occasionally cause delays.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want Kaikōura's wildlife without giving up comfort, yes. The tree houses are among the most romantic rooms in New Zealand. Dinner, breakfast, spa facilities and the minibar are included, which helps the value. In a town where most accommodation is motels along the Esplanade, Hapuku is in a different league.

It is less ideal if you want to walk to restaurants or the beach, since it sits outside town. Couples on a tight budget can get the same wildlife experiences from a motel or apartment in town for far less. If heights or stairs are a problem, book a Lodge Suite instead of a tree house.

Two nights is the least we'd suggest. Three allows for a backup day if a boat tour is canceled for weather. The lodge recommends booking direct for the best rates.

FAQ

Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses questions, answered

What is included at Hapuku Lodge?

Every stay includes a three-course dinner and a chef-cooked breakfast, access to the spa pool, sauna and heated mineral pool, a complimentary minibar, a guided nature walk and stargazing, mountain bikes and walking trails plus daily and evening turndown. Rates are quoted in New Zealand dollars and include GST. Spa treatments and tours cost extra.

How high are the tree houses?

The One-Bedroom Tree Houses are elevated about 10 meters into the canopy of native kānuka and pūriri trees. Each has a king bed, deep soaking bath, walk-in shower, fireplace, underfloor heating and private balcony with mountain and ocean views. If heights are a concern, the Lodge Suites offer a ground-level alternative.

How far is Hapuku Lodge from Kaikōura?

The lodge is about 12 km north of Kaikōura town on State Highway 1, a short drive to whale-watching and dolphin tour departures. It is about two and a half hours from Christchurch and an hour and a half from Blenheim. The lodge offers free pickup from Kaikōura town for train, plane or bus arrivals.

Is Hapuku Lodge kid-free?

No. Families are welcome. The lodge has a two-story family tree house and the three-bedroom Olive House. The One-Bedroom Tree Houses are designed for couples, though. The lodge is small and calm. If you want a quiet stay, avoid New Zealand school holidays and ask for a tree house away from the family options.

When is the best time to visit Kaikōura?

Sperm whales can be seen year-round, so any season works. Summer, from December to February, brings warmer weather and longer days, while spring and autumn are quieter. Winter often brings snow on the peaks behind the lodge and clear, crisp days. Allow a spare day in any season, since rough seas can cancel boat trips.
