Azulik Tulum

A hand-woven nest above the sea, where the jungle does the decorating.

Some hotels are designed. Azulik feels grown. Its villas rise from the jungle edge on twisting trunks of local wood and bejuco vine, shaped by artisans who worked by eye and hand rather than from blueprints. Floors curve, windows are round and terraces float over the sea. Nearly every surface seems to have been made for bare feet. It is the building that put Tulum's eco-chic aesthetic on the world's Instagram feeds. Seeing it in person, you two will understand why people travel across the hemisphere just to stay a few nights.

This is a kid-free retreat built for a very particular kind of honeymoon: slower, more sensory, more poetic. Picture a carved outdoor Maya tub filling as the sun goes down and a hanging Balinese bed on a deck above the waves. Then add dinner in a woven nest 40 feet up in the treetops at Kin Toh. Azulik isn't a resort in the conventional sense, with a big pool deck and a buffet line. It is an atmosphere. If that atmosphere speaks to you, there's nowhere else quite like it.

Highlights at a glance

  • Kid-free villas built by hand from local wood and vine
  • Oceanfront villas with hanging beds, Maya tubs and plunge pools
  • Kin Toh restaurant and its woven nests 40 feet up in the treetops
  • Maya Spa with cacao ceremonies and sound healing for couples
  • SFER IK, one of the most striking art spaces in Mexico
  • Steps from Tulum's beach-road restaurants and boutiques

Architecture That Breathes

Azulik sits on Tulum's beach road, the strip of boutique hotels and restaurants that runs south of the ruins between jungle and sea. The complex is a celebration of organic architecture: villas, walkways and restaurants rise on pillars of wood and vine, with curving lines that echo nests, shells and roots. Local craftspeople built much of it by hand. The effect is closer to a living sculpture than a hotel.

The same design language extends to SFER IK Tulum, the brand's art space, where swooping floors and woven ceilings set the stage for contemporary exhibitions. Wander through on your first evening; it's one of the most photographed interiors in Mexico.

The Villas

Azulik's roughly 48 villas come in several personalities. The most romantic choices face the water:

  • Moon Villa, among the largest, with an oceanfront terrace, a hanging Balinese bed, an outdoor Maya tub and a plunge pool overlooking the beach
  • Sky Villa, raised above the jungle with sea views, an oceanfront deck and both indoor and outdoor tubs
  • Sea Villa and Aqua Villa, built around views of the Caribbean and water-inspired forms
  • Jungle, Mayan and Aztec villas, smaller and tucked into the greenery, for a more intimate budget-conscious stay

The early Azulik legend was a hotel without electricity. Today, villas list power outlets, WiFi, air conditioning and ceiling fans, along with artisanal mosquito nets draped over the beds, so you get the romance without the hardship.

Dinner in the Treetops

Kin Toh is the reason many couples book Azulik at all. The restaurant is perched about 12 meters, or roughly 40 feet, up among the treetops. Its menu leans into avant-garde Maya-Mexican cooking built on ancestral techniques and local ingredients. The coveted seats are the floating nests, woven pods reserved separately for intimate dinners as the sun sets over the jungle. A wine cellar supplies pairings.

Azulik runs several other places to eat and drink, including Tseen Ja and Italik, plus spots like Mirador del Maestro and Copa del Pintor built around views. Tulum's celebrated beach-road dining scene is also right outside the gate, so you can mix in a few evenings elsewhere.

Maya Spa and Ritual

Wellness at Azulik is less about hot-stone massages and more about ceremony and intention. Maya Spa offers restorative bodywork alongside energy therapies, yoga and meditation, sound healing and even astrology sessions inspired by Mesoamerican cosmovision. The spa also offers temazcal and other Maya-inspired ceremonies.

For honeymooners, the couples' rituals are the draw: cacao ceremonies and shamanic sound healing designed to be shared. A full Sacred Day Pass strings together yoga, energy cleansing, sound healing and meditation before ending with a visit to SFER IK, a lovely way to spend a slow day together. Bookings are handled over WhatsApp, so message ahead to secure your preferred time.

Why Guests Fall in Love

Guests tend to describe Azulik less as a hotel and more as an experience. The architecture is the most consistent source of delight. Couples talk about the thrill of walking into a villa shaped like no room they've ever seen and of watching the sea through a round window from the tub.

Sunset at Kin Toh is another recurring highlight, with many calling dinner in the nests the most romantic meal of their trip. Guests also love the oceanfront terraces and outdoor Maya tubs plus the hush of a kid-free property. They like feeling disconnected from the everyday world while still steps from Tulum's best restaurants. Photographers and design lovers, in particular, rave about every corner.

Good to Know

Azulik's organic architecture means curving wooden walkways, ramps and steps rather than flat paved paths, so pack light and wear comfortable soles; guests with mobility concerns should contact the hotel before booking. The smaller jungle villas are very compact, around 15 square meters, so if you want space for a week-long stay, book an ocean-facing category.

This is not a resort with a big pool or kids' facilities; it's kid-free and designed for quiet. Kin Toh, the nests and SFER IK draw outside visitors, so reserve dinner well ahead even as a hotel guest. Direct-booking promotions appear periodically on the official site, though they're often nonrefundable.

Sargassum seaweed can wash up on this coast from roughly late spring through summer, so ask about beach conditions when you book. Use repellent at dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Mexico. After dark, take a taxi along the unlit beach road rather than walking.

Insider tips

  1. Book Moon Villa or Sky Villa for ocean views and the full Azulik experience; jungle villas are tiny.
  2. Reserve a Kin Toh nest the moment your dates are set and time it for sunset.
  3. Message Maya Spa on WhatsApp before arrival to book a couples' cacao ceremony.
  4. Check the official site for direct-booking offers, but read the cancellation terms carefully.

FAQ

Azulik Tulum questions, answered

Is Azulik Tulum kid-free?

Yes. Azulik Tulum is a kid-free property, which suits its quiet, sensory atmosphere. There's no kids' club, no big family pool and no bustle, so it's a natural choice for honeymooners who want a peaceful, intimate stay. Guests of the restaurants and art space come from outside, but the villas remain private.

Does Azulik still have no electricity or WiFi?

Azulik became famous for its candlelit, off-the-grid concept, but today the villas list power outlets, WiFi, air conditioning and ceiling fans, along with handmade mosquito nets. You can still choose to disconnect and enjoy the natural setting, but you won't have to give up modern comforts.

What is the best villa at Azulik for a honeymoon?

Moon Villa is a standout, with an oceanfront terrace, a hanging Balinese bed, an outdoor Maya tub and a plunge pool overlooking the beach. Sky Villa, raised above the jungle with sea views and both indoor and outdoor tubs, is another romantic pick. Jungle villas are atmospheric but very small.

How do we book the nests at Kin Toh?

The nests at Kin Toh are booked separately from standard tables, through the Azulik website, while regular restaurant tables are reserved through OpenTable. Demand is high, especially at sunset, so book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed and ask about any dress-code requirements.

How do we get to Azulik Tulum?

The closest airport is Tulum International (TQO), roughly 30 to 45 minutes by car. Many more US flights land at Cancún (CUN), about 1.5 to 2 hours north. Pre-book a private transfer either way. Once you're there, bikes and taxis make it easy to explore the beach road and Tulum town.
