The short answer

Robertsport is for adventurous couples, ideally surfers, who want a beautiful West African coast with almost no development. This fishing town on a forested cape in Liberia has long left-hand point breaks, the quiet Lake Piso lagoon and empty sand. There are no resorts: simple cabins and surf lodges run roughly $40 to $120 a night for two (approximate), with patchy power. Come January to March for dry roads and sunshine. Plan four or five nights. Don't miss a sunrise canoe trip on Lake Piso.

  • Malaria and remote health care worry you

Robertsport is a small fishing town on a forested cape in Liberia's far northwest, about 50 miles from Monrovia and close to the Sierra Leone border. The Atlantic curls around one side of the cape in a chain of long left-hand point breaks. On the other side lies Lake Piso, a broad brackish lagoon edged with mangroves and fishing villages.

The town was founded in the mid-1800s as a settlement for African American emigrants and named after Joseph Jenkins Roberts, Liberia's first president. Some of the old plantation-style houses still stand, many of them battered by the civil wars. Today the place runs on fishing and a slowly growing surf scene that has drawn film crews and traveling surfers for over a decade.

For a honeymoon it offers something rare: a beautiful coast with almost no development. Lodging is simple, power can be patchy and the road from the capital is slow. In return you get warm water, empty breaks and evenings with nothing to do but watch the light go.

Why Honeymoon in Robertsport

Most beach honeymoons are about comfort. Robertsport is about the place itself. The cape is green and steep, the sand is pale and the beaches curve in a way that makes every walk end at another headland. Fishing canoes painted in bright colors line the shore and children follow you along the water's edge for the first day or two until you become familiar faces.

Couples who surf will be very happy here. Several named breaks peel along the cape. On many days you will share them with only a handful of locals and visitors. Couples who do not surf can paddle the lagoon, read in a hammock and learn to cook the catch with lodge staff.

It suits a second half of a trip after a few nights in Monrovia, or a pairing with Sierra Leone's beaches to the north.

When to Go

The dry season is the time to come. January to March is the most reliable stretch, with warm sunny days near 86°F, little rain and roads in their best condition. December and April are also usually good, though the harmattan haze can soften the sky around the turn of the year and April can bring early storms.

From May to October the rains take over. Robertsport averages well over 150 inches of rain a year, most of it in these months. July through September are the wettest of all. Surfers sometimes come in the wet season for the larger swells, but the road can be difficult and many days are gray.

Water temperatures stay warm all year, so a thin rash guard is all most surfers need. Plan on four or five nights: enough for a few lessons, a lagoon morning and at least one day with no plans.

Where to Stay

There are no resorts in Robertsport. That is worth knowing before you book. Lodging ranges from tents and beach cabins to simple guest rooms, usually with fans, mosquito nets and solar or generator power for part of the day.

Long-running names include Nana's Lodge, with cabins on the beach near the surf. Another is Kwepunha Retreat, a surf lodge that also runs community programs in town. Several smaller guesthouses sit in the town itself. A few simple places in the forested hills behind the cape suit couples who want trees instead of waves. For the most privacy, ask for a cabin at the end of the row rather than one beside the lodge bar. Rough prices run from about $40 to $120 a night for two, sometimes with meals included; treat these as approximate.

When you write to a lodge, ask about power hours, hot water, whether meals are included and whether they can arrange your transfer from Monrovia. Book ahead for December and January, when visiting surfers and Liberians on holiday fill the few good rooms.

Romantic Things to Do

Take a surf lesson together. Local surfers, many of whom learned on boards left by visiting travelers, give lessons on the gentler inside sections. Even if you never stand up, you will laugh a lot.

Hire a dugout canoe and a guide for an early paddle on Lake Piso, when the water is flat and herons work the mangrove edges. Some guides will take you to fishing villages on the far shore.

Walk the beach toward Fisherman's Point in the late afternoon and watch the canoes come in through the surf with the day's catch. Buy fish straight from the boats and have your lodge grill it for dinner.

On a clear night, find a dark stretch of sand near your lodge and look up. With little electric light in town the stars are bright. Stay close to the lodge after dark and leave valuables in your room.

Getting There and Around

Fly into Roberts International Airport, which sits southeast of Monrovia next to the Firestone plantation. Robertsport lies northwest of the capital, so the full trip from the airport usually takes three to four hours by car or longer in traffic or rain. Most couples spend a night in Monrovia first and drive north the next morning.

The easiest option is a private car and driver arranged through your lodge or hotel. Agree on the price and the pickup time in advance. Shared taxis do run to Robertsport but they are crowded and slow.

Once in town you can walk almost everywhere. The breaks, the beach and the lagoon shore are all within reach on foot or with a short motorbike ride. Wear a helmet if you take one and avoid motorbikes after dark.

Food and Drink

Fish is the center of every meal. Expect grilled barracuda or snapper, fried bonga fish and fish pepper soup, usually with rice, fried plantains or cassava. Lodges cook simple dishes and often ask in the morning what you would like for dinner so they can buy it from the boats.

Try palm butter, a rich stew made from palm nut pulp. Cassava leaf is another staple, cooked down with fish or meat and plenty of hot pepper. Fresh coconuts are sold along the road and in town.

Bring snacks from Monrovia if you have favorites, since shops in Robertsport stock only basics. Cold drinks depend on the generator. Club beer is the local lager. Most lodges keep some in the fridge. Drink bottled or filtered water only.

Honeymoon Tips

Pack as if you are going somewhere remote, because you are. Bring a headlamp, a power bank, reef-safe sunscreen, repellent, any medicines you need and enough cash in clean US bills for the whole stay. There is no reliable ATM in town.

Take malaria prevention seriously and sleep under a net. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Liberia first. Rip currents run near the breaks, so swim where locals swim and ask the lodge each morning which stretch is calm. Bring your own surf leash and wax if you have them, since rental gear can be worn.

Mobile data works in parts of town but can be slow. Tell family you may be offline for a few days, then enjoy it.

Be generous with greetings. In a town this small, saying hello to everyone you pass makes a real difference to how welcome you feel. Ask before taking photos of people and their boats. Wear a cover-up when you walk into town from the beach.

FAQ

Robertsport honeymoon FAQ

How far is Robertsport from Monrovia?

About 50 miles in a straight line and roughly 80 miles by road, which usually takes about three hours from central Monrovia. From Roberts International Airport add another hour or more. Most couples overnight in Monrovia after landing and drive north the next morning in daylight.

Is Robertsport safe for tourists?

Robertsport is a small, friendly town and most visitors report relaxed stays. Liberia as a whole carries a Level 2 State Department advisory for crime, unrest and limited health care, so the usual precautions apply. Keep valuables in your room, avoid isolated beaches at night and use a known driver for the road trip.

Do we need to know how to surf?

Not at all. Lessons are available for beginners and plenty of visitors never surf. The lagoon, beach walks, fishing culture and quiet evenings fill a stay on their own. If one of you surfs and the other does not, the beaches make a pleasant place to watch and read.

Are there luxury hotels in Robertsport?

No. Lodging is simple, with beach cabins, surf lodges and small guesthouses. Expect fans rather than air conditioning, limited power hours and shared or basic bathrooms in some places. Couples who want comfort can split the trip with nights in a business hotel in Monrovia at the start and end.

When is surf season in Robertsport?

There is surf through most of the year. The larger swells usually arrive during the wetter months from around April to October, while the dry season brings smaller, cleaner days that suit beginners and better weather overall. For a honeymoon, January to March balances good waves with dry roads and sunshine.
