At a glanceA long two-part honeymoon that pairs Thailand's culture and food with a week in the Maldives: four nights in Chiang Mai, three on the river in Bangkok, then a four-hour flight to Malé and a seaplane to Ari Atoll for seven nights of whale sharks, reef snorkeling and doing nothing. It suits couples who want culture first and a long, quiet finish. Go from November to March.
Thailand and the Maldives make one of the most balanced long honeymoons in Asia. The first week is full of temples, markets and some of the best food in the world, at prices that let you stay in the finest hotels. The second week is a full stop: a water villa, a house reef and a seaplane ride from anywhere.
This route starts in the north. Chiang Mai is calmer than Bangkok, with an old walled city, mountain temples and a cool-season climate that makes it easy to recover from the long flight. Bangkok follows for three nights on the Chao Phraya River, with long-tail boats through the canals, dawn temple visits and rooftop drinks.
Then you fly to Malé and take a seaplane to Ari Atoll, known for whale sharks in the south and manta rays at cleaning stations. Seven nights in one place is long enough to sleep late, swim from your deck and still go out on the reef most days.

Day by day
Days 1–5: Chiang Mai
Fly into Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi (BKK), usually via Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei or Hong Kong. Then connect to Chiang Mai International (CNX), about an hour and ten minutes. The old city is 15 minutes away. 137 Pillars House is a restored teak house turned boutique hotel near the Ping River, with suites and a quiet pool.
Keep day 2 slow: explore the old city by bicycle and stop at its temples, then get a couples Thai massage. On day 3, drive up Doi Suthep at sunrise for the golden chedi and views over the valley.
Spend day 4 at an ethical elephant sanctuary where you watch and feed rather than ride, or take a northern Thai cooking class with a market visit. The romantic moment comes if your dates align with Yi Peng, usually in November, when thousands of paper lanterns float up into the night sky. Otherwise, walk the Sunday Walking Street market at dusk.
Days 5–8: Bangkok
Fly from Chiang Mai to Bangkok in about an hour and ten minutes. Stay on the river: Capella Bangkok has villas and rooms all facing the Chao Phraya, while the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is the historic riverside classic. The airport is 45 to 75 minutes away by car.
On day 6, visit Wat Pho at opening time for the reclining Buddha before the heat and crowds. Then cross the river by ferry to Wat Arun. In the afternoon, take a long-tail boat through the Thonburi canals, past stilt houses and small temples.
On day 7, rest by the pool, then spend the evening on Chinatown's street food stalls on Yaowarat Road. Book a rooftop drink above Silom or a rice barge dinner cruise on the river. The romantic moment is sunset at Wat Arun, watched from a riverside terrace across the water as the temple lights up.
Days 8–15: Ari Atoll, the Maldives
Fly from Bangkok to Velana International (MLE) in about four hours nonstop, or connect through Colombo, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Choose a flight that lands by early afternoon so you can catch a seaplane; they only fly in daylight. The seaplane to Ari Atoll takes 25 to 40 minutes.
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island spreads over two islands linked by a long footbridge, with water villas, two spas and Ithaa, the undersea restaurant. Other resorts across the atoll range from boutique islands to larger all-inclusive properties.
This is the slow stretch. Spend the first two days in your villa and on the house reef. Then add one outing a day: a whale shark trip in South Ari, a manta ray snorkel, a guided night snorkel or a sunset sandbank picnic. Book dinner at the undersea restaurant once. The romantic moment is a walk across the footbridge at golden hour. On day 15, take the seaplane back to Malé for flights home.
Getting Between Stops
There are no nonstop flights from the US to Thailand. Most couples connect through Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong or the Gulf. Book a through ticket to Chiang Mai so you only clear immigration once, in Bangkok.
Chiang Mai to Bangkok takes about an hour and ten minutes, with many daily flights. Bangkok's main airport, Suvarnabhumi (BKK), handles most international flights; Don Mueang (DMK) handles many budget carriers, so check which airport you are using.
Bangkok to Malé takes about four hours. If there is no nonstop on your dates, connect through Colombo, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Seaplanes operate only in daylight, so plan flights that land by mid-afternoon or book a night near Malé. Some Ari resorts also use a domestic flight to South Ari and a speedboat, which works later in the day. To fly home from Malé, connect through the Gulf, Istanbul or Europe.
Where to Stay
Chiang Mai: 137 Pillars House is a colonial-era teak house with suites and a pool near the river. Smaller boutique hotels in the old city put you within walking distance of temples and markets.
Bangkok: Capella Bangkok has riverside villas with plunge pools and very calm service. The Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is the grand old name on the river, with a famous afternoon tea and a spa across the water.
Ari Atoll: Conrad Maldives Rangali Island has water villas with infinity pools, a huge house reef and around a dozen restaurants and bars, including the undersea Ithaa. Book a water villa on the quieter Rangali side. Across the atoll, smaller boutique islands offer a more intimate stay with fewer facilities.

When to Go
November to March is the best window for both halves. Northern Thailand's cool season runs from about November to February, with sunny days and cool mornings. Bangkok is hot all year but least humid from November to February. March and April are the hottest months. Smoke from crop burning can affect Chiang Mai's air quality in March and April.
The Maldives are driest from about December to April, with calm seas and clear water. May to October brings the southwest monsoon, with more rain and wind, though there are many sunny days and rates fall.
November is the most romantic time for Chiang Mai if you can catch Yi Peng. Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks in the Maldives, so book well ahead or avoid them.
Budget and Booking
Thailand is excellent value. Top riverside hotels in Bangkok run roughly $650–900 a night for two; boutique hotels in Chiang Mai cost about $400. Meals, massages and taxis are inexpensive. The Maldives are where the money goes: good water villas in Ari Atoll run about $1,200–3,000 a night for two, often more over the holidays. All figures are approximate.
Seaplane transfers are charged per person and are expensive. Resort meals add up quickly too. Compare half board, full board and all-inclusive rates; for a seven-night stay, an inclusive plan often costs less overall.
Book the Maldives first. Many resorts offer honeymoon extras such as a sandbank dinner or spa treatment with proof of your wedding date. Some also have honeymoon rate offers for longer stays.
Make It Shorter or Longer
For 11 or 12 days, drop Chiang Mai and spend three nights in Bangkok, then seven in the Maldives. Or keep Chiang Mai and cut the Maldives to five nights.
With 17 to 19 days, add two nights in the Golden Triangle near Chiang Rai after Chiang Mai. Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle has tented suites in the jungle near the Mekong River. Or add three nights on a Thai island such as Koh Yao Noi or Koh Samui before the Maldives.
Couples who want two Maldives resorts can split the seven nights between Ari Atoll and a second atoll, though each move adds a seaplane transfer. Most couples prefer to stay put.
Honeymoon Tips
- Cover shoulders and knees at Thai temples, both of you. Carry a light scarf or sarong.
- Never touch anyone's head in Thailand or point your feet at a Buddha image.
- Use metered taxis or ride-hailing apps in Bangkok. Agree a price before boarding a tuk-tuk.
- Choose elephant sanctuaries where you observe rather than ride.
- Dengue occurs in Thailand and the Maldives. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
- On local Maldivian islands, dress modestly and note that alcohol is served only at resorts.
- Read the State Department advisories for Thailand and the Maldives before you go.
FAQPlanning this trip
How do we fly from Thailand to the Maldives?
Fly from Bangkok to Malé in about four hours nonstop, or connect through Colombo, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Choose a flight that lands by early afternoon so you can take a seaplane to your resort the same day. Otherwise, use a domestic flight and speedboat or stay a night near Malé.
Is seven nights in the Maldives too long?
Not for most honeymooners. After a busy week in Thailand, seven nights let you rest properly and still fit in whale shark trips, manta snorkels and a sandbank dinner. If you get restless, a resort with several restaurants and plenty of excursions, such as the Conrad, keeps things varied.
Why start in Chiang Mai instead of Bangkok?
Chiang Mai is calmer and cooler, which makes it easier to recover from the long flight. Ending the Thailand half in Bangkok also puts you at the airport with direct flights to Malé, avoiding an extra domestic connection on your travel day.
When is the best time for Thailand and the Maldives?
November to March is best. Northern Thailand is cool and dry, Bangkok is less humid and the Maldives are in their dry season from about December. November adds the Yi Peng lantern festival in Chiang Mai. Avoid March and April for smoky air in the north.
How much does a Thailand and Maldives honeymoon cost?
For about two weeks, many couples spend roughly $13,000 to $32,000 for two including domestic flights and seaplane transfers, before international airfare. These are approximate figures. Thailand costs little; the Maldives water villa, transfers and meals make up most of the budget.
