The short answer

Zagori is a mountain honeymoon in northwest Greece, with 46 stone villages, arched bridges and the Vikos Gorge, all part of a UNESCO site. It suits active couples who like hiking, river swims and fireside dinners more than beaches. Go from May to June or September to October and stay three or four nights, ideally combined with the coast. Boutique guesthouses and food cost less than on the famous islands.

Best for
  • Hikers and active couples
  • A cozy autumn or winter honeymoon
  • Pairing mountains with an Ionian beach stay
Maybe skip it if
  • You want a beach-focused trip
  • You prefer not to drive mountain roads

Zagori is the Greek honeymoon for couples who would rather hike than lie on a beach. It is a cluster of 46 stone villages in the Pindus Mountains of Epirus, in northwest Greece, linked by old mule paths and arched stone bridges. Its centerpiece is the Vikos Gorge, a canyon so deep relative to its width that Guinness has listed it as the deepest in the world. The whole area became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023.

The mood is completely different from the islands. Slate roofs, church bell towers and stone mansions sit on green slopes below limestone peaks. Days are spent walking between villages, swimming in a freezing river or looking down from cliff viewpoints. Evenings mean wood fires, mountain pies and local wine in small guesthouses.

Plan three or four nights, ideally combined with a few days on the coast or in Athens. Ioannina, a lakeside city about an hour away, has an airport with flights from Athens. Zagori works in every season, from spring wildflowers to autumn color to snowy villages in winter.

Why Honeymoon in Zagori

Zagori offers a side of Greece most visitors never see. The villages are beautifully preserved, partly because of strict building rules. Many old mansions have been turned into boutique guesthouses with fireplaces and stone terraces.

The hiking is excellent. You can walk from village to village on cobbled paths, cross the Vikos Gorge from Monodendri to Vikos village or climb to the Dragon Lake on Mount Tymfi. There are also easy walks to bridges, viewpoints and swimming holes.

It is quiet. Even in August, Zagori never feels crowded the way the islands do. Many villages have only a few dozen full-time residents.

The area is also romantic in a slower, cozier way. Think of long breakfasts, a hike with a picnic, a swim in a cold river and dinner by a fire. It works well as a contrast to a beach stay, giving a Greek honeymoon two very different moods.

When to Go

May, June, September and October are the best months. Spring brings wildflowers, rushing rivers and green slopes. Autumn brings golden and red leaves, crisp air and harvest food. Both are ideal for hiking.

July and August are warm but rarely as hot as Athens, since the villages sit at around 800 to 1,000 meters or more. Summer is the season for river swims at the Papingo rock pools and the Voidomatis, though the water stays very cold year-round. It is also the busiest time, with Greek families on holiday.

Winter can be beautiful, with snow on the villages and peaks and fires in every guesthouse. Roads may need snow chains and some trails become difficult. It is a lovely choice for a cozy honeymoon if you are comfortable driving in snow or arrange transfers. Late winter and early spring can be muddy as snow melts. Some guesthouses close in November.

Where to Stay

Places to stay are mostly small guesthouses and boutique hotels in restored stone mansions. Many have only a few rooms, so book ahead for summer, autumn weekends and holidays.

  • Megalo and Mikro Papingo: twin villages below the towers of Astraka, with the best access to the rock pools and Dragon Lake trail. They are among the most popular and polished villages.
  • Monodendri: on the rim of the gorge, near the Oxia viewpoint and the start of the main Vikos Gorge hike.
  • Aristi: close to the Voidomatis River, with access to rafting and kayaking. Aristi Mountain Resort is a well-known boutique hotel with a spa and views of the mountains.
  • Kipoi and Dilofo: central Zagori, near the old bridges and quieter.
  • Tsepelovo: higher and more remote, with trails toward Mount Tymfi.

Stay in one or two villages and use a car to explore the region.

Romantic Things to Do

Drive to the Oxia viewpoint above Monodendri for one of the best views into the Vikos Gorge. Go at sunrise or late afternoon. The Beloi viewpoint, reached by a short walk from Vradeto, gives a view from the other side.

Hike the gorge. The full crossing from Monodendri to Vikos village takes most of a day and requires good fitness. Shorter walks reach the springs of the Voidomatis near Vikos village.

In summer, swim in the Papingo rock pools, a series of small, clear pools in a narrow gorge. The water is cold but refreshing.

Visit the old stone bridges, including the three-arched Kalogeriko Bridge near Kipoi.

Go rafting or kayaking on the Voidomatis River near Aristi, which is gentle enough for beginners.

For a bigger adventure, hike from Papingo to the Astraka refuge and on to the Dragon Lake, staying overnight at the refuge.

Getting There and Around

Fly into Athens (ATH) and connect to Ioannina National Airport (IOA), a short domestic flight. From Ioannina, the Zagori villages are about 45 minutes to an hour by car. You can also drive from Athens in roughly 4.5 to 5 hours on modern highways, or from Thessaloniki in about 3 hours.

Rent a car for your stay. Public transport to the villages is very limited. Mountain roads are paved but narrow and winding, with sharp bends and occasional livestock. In winter, carry snow chains or ask your rental company about winter tires.

Many guesthouses can arrange transfers, hiking guides and luggage transport if you want to walk between villages.

The city of Ioannina is worth half a day. It sits on Lake Pamvotida, with an old castle, a mosque turned museum and a small island reached by boat. It is also known for silversmithing.

Food and Drink

Epirus is known for pies. Zagori is a great place to try them. Look for hortopita with wild greens, cheese pies and meat pies, often made with thin, hand-rolled pastry. Many guesthouses serve homemade pies at breakfast.

Tavernas serve slow-cooked lamb and goat, wild mushrooms in autumn, river trout and hearty bean dishes. Local cheeses, including feta and graviera from the region, are excellent. Desserts often feature walnuts and honey.

Tsipouro, a clear grape spirit, is the local drink, often served with small plates. For wine, try the semi-sparkling and still whites from Zitsa, a wine area near Ioannina made from the Debina grape.

Meals are generous and prices are lower than on the islands. Many villages have only one or two tavernas, so ask your guesthouse for a recommendation and reserve on busy weekends.

Honeymoon Tips

Pack for the mountains, not the beach. Bring hiking shoes with good grip, layers, a rain jacket and a warm sweater even in summer evenings. Trails are often rocky and can be slippery.

The gorge hike is long and has limited water sources in summer, with few places to leave the trail. Start early, carry plenty of water and tell your guesthouse your plan. Some viewpoints and paths have steep drops without railings, so take care if either of you dislikes heights.

Mobile coverage can be patchy in the gorge and higher trails. Download offline maps before you go.

Cash is useful in small villages, although most guesthouses accept cards.

Zagori pairs well with the Ionian coast. Parga, Corfu and the beaches of Epirus are within a few hours, so you can finish with a few nights by the sea.

Fly from Athens to Ioannina (IOA), then drive about 45 minutes to an hour to the villages. You can also drive from Athens in around 4.5 to 5 hours, or from Thessaloniki in about 3 hours. A rental car is the easiest way to explore, since public transport is limited.

How hard is the Vikos Gorge hike?

The full hike from Monodendri to Vikos village is long and best for fit hikers with good shoes. It involves a steep descent, rocky paths and a climb out at the end. Shorter walks, such as the trail to the Voidomatis springs, are much easier. Start early in summer and carry plenty of water.
