The short answer

Paros is a happy medium for a Greek island honeymoon: livelier than Folegandros or Milos, far calmer than Mykonos and an easy hub for hopping to Antiparos, Naxos or Santorini. June and September bring warm water and space to breathe. It suits couples who want a stylish harbor dinner and an empty bay the next morning. Naoussa's best hotels usually cost less than comparable rooms on Mykonos or Santorini, though July and August rates climb fast. Do not miss dinner on Naoussa's harbor among the fishing boats.

Best for
  • Couples island hopping the Cyclades
  • Food lovers who like harbor tavernas
  • Beach days with some nightlife
Maybe skip it if
  • You can only travel in August
  • Strong summer wind would spoil it

Paros sits in the middle of the Cyclades and works as a natural hub. Ferries from all directions stop here, so the island feels connected without being overrun. It has the whitewashed lanes and blue shutters of a classic Greek postcard. It also has a working agricultural interior, a strong local food culture and beaches on every side of the island.

For honeymooners Paros is a happy medium. It is livelier than Folegandros or Milos, with a real evening scene in Naoussa, yet far less frantic than Mykonos. Couples can have a stylish dinner on the harbor, then wake up and drive to a quiet bay with nobody on it.

The island is also an easy base. Its small sister island, Antiparos, is minutes away by car ferry. Naxos, Mykonos and Santorini are a short boat ride off. Five nights is a good length on its own, or three to four as part of a wider route.

Why Honeymoon in Paros

Paros gives you variety without long drives. In one day you can walk the lanes of Parikia, swim among smooth granite boulders at Kolymbithres and watch the fishing boats return to Naoussa's tiny Venetian harbor at sunset.

The island has history worth a look too. Ancient sculptors prized Parian marble. Old quarry tunnels survive near Marathi. In Parikia, the Panagia Ekatontapiliani is among the oldest churches in Greece, with parts dating to the Byzantine era.

The hotel scene has grown more polished in recent years. You can now stay at design-driven boutique resorts around Naoussa while still eating at simple tavernas a few steps away. That mix of comfort and character is the main reason couples choose Paros over a single resort island.

When to Go

June and September are the best months for most couples. The water is warm, the days are long and the island has energy without being crowded. Late May can be excellent if you care more about walking than swimming.

July is busy but manageable. August is peak season, when Greek families and European visitors fill the island and Naoussa gets crowded at night. Book rooms and car rentals well ahead if you must travel then.

The meltemi wind blows hard in midsummer. That is why Paros is a famous windsurfing and kitesurfing spot, especially around Golden Beach and Pounda. For swimming, pick sheltered beaches on the side away from the wind each day.

Many hotels and restaurants operate from about April or May to October. Winter is quiet, with limited dining and ferries.

Where to Stay

Naoussa is the honeymoon favorite. The village wraps around a small harbor with ruins of a Venetian fortress at its mouth. Restaurants and cocktail bars line the lanes. The best upscale hotels on the island are on the hills around it and near Kolymbithres, including Parilio and Cosme, a Luxury Collection resort. Expect pools, sea views and a short drive or taxi into the village.

Parikia, the capital and main port, is practical. It has a lively seafront, a pretty old town and the island's best ferry links. Sunsets over the bay are very good from here.

For a quieter stay, look at the east coast near Piso Livadi and Logaras, or in the hill village of Lefkes. You give up nightlife but gain peace and local character. Naoussa's best hotels usually cost less than comparable rooms on Mykonos or Santorini, though July and August rates climb quickly.

Romantic Things to Do

Walk the Byzantine path from Lefkes down to the village of Prodromos. The old marble-paved route runs about an hour through olive groves and terraces, mostly downhill. Have a taxi or your car meet you at the bottom.

Rent a small boat or join a cruise to the cove beaches of the north coast and the islets off Antiparos. A private skipper can plan the day around the wind.

Spend an evening on Antiparos. The car ferry from Pounda takes only a few minutes. The main village has a pleasant lane of bars and tavernas. The island's large cave is worth a visit if you go earlier in the day.

Take a sunset drink at a bar near the windmill in Parikia. Back in Naoussa, linger over dinner on the harbor as the lights come on.

Getting There and Around

From the US, fly to Athens and then choose between a short domestic flight to Paros or a ferry. Ferries leave from Piraeus and from Rafina, which is closer to Athens airport. Fast boats take roughly three to four hours. Slower ferries take longer. Paros also connects easily with Naxos, Mykonos, Santorini and many smaller islands.

On the island, a reasonable bus network links Parikia, Naoussa, Lefkes and many beaches. A rental car or scooter gives you the most flexibility, especially for choosing a sheltered beach on windy days. Roads are generally good, though village lanes are tight and parking in Naoussa fills quickly on summer evenings. Taxis are limited, so book them for late nights and ferry departures.

Food and Drink

Paros eats well. In Naoussa the ouzeri along the harbor serve grilled octopus, small fried fish and local specialties like gouna, mackerel split and dried in the sun before grilling. Order a carafe of ouzo or tsipouro and share plates.

Inland, look for tavernas in Lefkes, Marpissa and Prodromos that cook with local vegetables, cheese and lamb. Paros also makes its own wine, mostly from the white Monemvasia grape and the red Mandilaria. The Moraitis winery near Naoussa offers tastings.

For something more polished, the hotel restaurants around Naoussa have modern Greek menus and good wine lists. Book these well ahead in high season. Finish with an evening walk and a scoop of ice cream along the harbor.

Honeymoon Tips

Check the wind forecast every morning. On a strong north wind, head south or east for calmer water.

Plan Naoussa dinners early or late. Between about 9 and 11 p.m. in summer, the lanes are packed.

If you are island hopping, put Paros in the middle. Its ferry links make it easy to reach Santorini, Naxos or Mykonos for a few nights.

Rent your car in advance in July and August. Island fleets sell out.

Bring light layers for evenings in June and September, when the wind can make outdoor dinners feel cool.

For a slower pace, add one or two nights on Antiparos. The island is small and relaxed with a handful of upscale villas and hotels.

FAQ

Paros honeymoon FAQ

Is Paros or Naxos better for a honeymoon?

Paros has a more stylish dining and hotel scene, especially in Naoussa. Naxos is larger, greener and more rugged, with longer sandy beaches and a strong farming culture. Both are easy to combine, as ferries between them run often. Many couples stay on Paros and take a day trip to Naxos.

Should we stay in Naoussa or Parikia?

Naoussa is the more romantic choice, with a pretty harbor, good restaurants and the island's best boutique hotels nearby. Parikia is more practical, with the main ferry port and a pleasant old town. If you have early ferries, a final night in Parikia can make sense.

How windy is Paros in summer?

Paros can be very windy in July and August when the meltemi blows. That is good news for windsurfers and kitesurfers. Swimmers simply choose beaches on the sheltered side of the island each day. A light jacket for evenings helps even in midsummer.

How do we get to Antiparos?

A small car ferry runs frequently from Pounda on the west coast of Paros. The crossing takes only a few minutes. Passenger boats also run from Parikia in summer. You can take a car across or leave it in Paros and explore Antiparos on foot and by scooter.

How many nights do we need on Paros?

Four or five nights lets you settle in, explore Naoussa and Parikia, walk from Lefkes, spend a day on the water and visit Antiparos. In a multi-island trip, three nights works, though you may wish you had stayed longer once you find a favorite beach.
