Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens

A pine-covered peninsula with three beaches, half an hour from the Acropolis

The Four Seasons Astir Palace answers a question many Greece honeymooners ask: can you have a real beach resort and still see the Acropolis? Yes. The hotel covers a 75-acre peninsula in Vouliagmeni on the Athens Riviera, wrapped in pine trees and edged by three private beaches and central Athens is about 30 minutes away by car.

The Astir Palace was a 1960s jet-set address before Four Seasons restored it. The result mixes that retro glamour with modern Greek design. Rooms sit in two buildings, Arion and Nafsika and there is a cluster of restored bungalows near the water. Several sea-view suites and bungalows have their own pools.

With eight restaurants, lounges and bars, a spa built around Greek rituals and clear Aegean water below the rocks, it works as a first or last stop on a Greece honeymoon. Spend the morning at the Acropolis, then swim before lunch. It suits couples who want resort comfort without an island ferry. Couples who want the energy of the old town should stay in the center instead or split their nights.

Highlights at a glance

  • Three private beaches on a 75-acre peninsula
  • Sea-view suites and bungalows with private pools
  • Eight restaurants, lounges and bars
  • About 30 minutes from the Acropolis
  • Restored 1960s Riviera glamour

Why Couples Love the Astir Palace

Most Athens hotels make you choose between ancient sites and the sea. Here you get both on the same day. The peninsula is big enough to feel like a world of its own, with shaded paths through the pines, coves for swimming and views across the Saronic Gulf toward the islands.

The three beaches each have their own mood, so you can pick a busier one with service or a quieter corner with a book. The water is clear and usually calm in summer. Evenings are soft and pine-scented and the sunsets over the gulf are a nightly ritual.

Couples also mention the service. Four Seasons staff are good at small gestures, from a bottle of something cold on arrival to arranging a private car into the city at the right hour. It feels like a resort holiday with a capital city on call.

Rooms, Suites and Bungalows to Book

Accommodation is split into distinct groups, so it is worth choosing deliberately.

  • Arion rooms and suites have a retro-chic look and a laid-back feel. The Arion Sea-View Room is a good value entry point.
  • Nafsika rooms and suites all face the sea and some include a private pool. The Nafsika Sea-View Terrace Suite with Pool is the classic honeymoon pick.
  • The Bungalows keep their 1960s character and sit closer to the water. A Sea-View Bungalow feels more private than a room in a building.
  • Private Pool Suites bring together the suites and bungalows with their own pools.

If the budget stretches to one splurge, make it a private pool. Midsummer days on the Riviera are hot and a pool outside your door means you never have to fight for a lounger.

Food, Drink and the Spa

With eight restaurants, lounges and bars, you could stay a week without repeating a meal. Expect sea-view tavernas serving grilled fish and Greek mezze, more polished dining in the evening and a cigar lounge for a slow nightcap. Ask the concierge which venue is best for sunset on the nights you are there, since the view shifts between the different sides of the peninsula.

The spa offers treatments built on local traditions. The 80-minute Storgi Ritual is the signature for couples and a good way to recover from a day on hot marble at the Acropolis.

One night, leave the resort and eat in the Vouliagmeni or Varkiza area, where seaside tavernas are full of Athenian families on weekends. It gives you a sense of how locals use the Riviera.

Things to Do

Swimming comes first. Beyond the three beaches, Lake Vouliagmeni is close by, a brackish lake fed by warm springs under a limestone cliff where you can float even in spring.

For culture, the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum and Plaka are about 30 minutes away. Go early, return for a swim and head back for dinner in the city once the heat drops. The hotel can arrange drivers.

The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is about 45 minutes farther down the coast and is best timed for sunset. Day cruises to Aegina, Poros and Hydra leave from nearby marinas and from Piraeus. Active couples can rent paddleboards or kayaks, run the coastal paths or play tennis. Others can stay horizontal by the water all day.

Getting There

Athens International Airport (ATH) is about 35–45 minutes by car along the coast or the inland highway. Book a private transfer through the hotel or take a licensed taxi from the rank.

Central Athens is about 30 minutes away when traffic is light, more at rush hour. Taxis and ride apps work well and the coastal tram runs along the Riviera if you want to try public transport, though it is slow.

Piraeus, the main ferry port, is roughly 40 minutes away. Many couples spend their first or last nights here and connect to the Cyclades by ferry or a short flight. If you are flying out early, a Riviera base is no harder for the airport than the city center.

Is It Worth It?

It is one of the best ways to add a beach resort to an Athens stay and it is the most complete resort on the Riviera. Couples who want Greek sea and city sights without catching a ferry will be very happy here.

It is not cheap and summer rates climb steeply. You also need a car or taxi for every trip into the city, which adds time and cost. If your honeymoon is mostly about the islands, two nights here and the rest on Santorini, Milos or Paros make sense, rather than a long stay. Couples on a tighter budget can get Acropolis views for less in central boutique hotels, though without the beaches.

For shoulder-season honeymooners in May, June, September or early October, it is especially good value, with warm water and fewer crowds.

Good to Know

The resort welcomes families, so expect some children around the pools in July and August. The beaches have quieter corners for couples who want calm.

Sun protection matters; the Riviera is bright and hot in summer and rocky entries mean water shoes help on some coves. Dress for dinner is smart casual for both of you.

Book dinners at the most popular restaurants ahead in high season and ask about any minimum stays on summer weekends. Bring your passport for check-in.

FAQ

Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens questions, answered

How far is the Four Seasons Astir Palace from the Acropolis?

Central Athens and the Acropolis are about 30 minutes away by car when traffic is light and longer at rush hour. The hotel can arrange a driver. Many guests go early in the morning, return for a swim at midday and head back into the city for dinner once the heat eases.

Which rooms have private pools?

Some Nafsika sea-view suites, including the Sea-View Terrace Suite with Pool, have private pools, as do selected bungalows. The hotel groups these as Private Pool Suites. Arion rooms do not have private pools but are good value. For a summer honeymoon, a private pool is the upgrade most worth paying for.

Is the Astir Palace kid-free?

No. It welcomes families, especially in summer. The peninsula is large and the three beaches have different moods, so couples can usually find quiet corners. Ask the resort which beach or pool area tends to be calmest during your stay.

When is the best time to stay?

May, June, September and early October are ideal, with warm sea temperatures, long evenings and lower rates than in July and August. Midsummer is very hot in Athens, which makes the beaches and private pools more valuable. Winter is mild but too cool for most swimmers.

Can we combine a stay here with the Greek islands?

Easily. Piraeus port is roughly 40 minutes away and Athens International Airport is about 35–45 minutes away for short flights to Santorini, Mykonos, Milos and Crete. Many couples spend two nights here at the start or end of an island honeymoon.
