Maslina Resort is the hotel on Hvar for couples who want the island's calm side. It sits on Maslinica Bay just outside Stari Grad, on the north coast, among pine and olive trees that run right down to the water. It is the antidote to the yachts and beach clubs of Hvar Town, about 20 minutes away by road.

The resort is a member of Relais & Châteaux. The design is contemporary and restrained, with natural materials, clean lines and plenty of glass looking out to the bay. Beyond the rooms and suites there are private villas for couples who want a pool of their own. Pharomatiq Wellness is the spa. A beach bar, a seaside dining terrace and a restaurant built around the resort's organic garden complete the picture.

Maslina suits couples who want a slow honeymoon: swimming, reading, long dinners and a few trips out to the vineyards and coves. It does welcome families, so expect some children in summer. Couples who want to walk out to bars and nightlife each evening should stay in Hvar Town instead.

Why Couples Love Maslina

It feels a long way from the party side of Hvar, even though Hvar Town is a short drive away. The bay is sheltered and quiet. Pines shade the paths. The resort is designed so that the landscape, not the buildings, does the talking.

Stari Grad helps too. It is one of the oldest towns in Croatia, with a long harbor, stone lanes and a small selection of excellent restaurants. Evenings there are relaxed rather than loud, which suits honeymooners who want a stroll and a glass of wine rather than a club.

The resort also brings real craft to food and wellness. The Relais & Châteaux affiliation signals a strong focus on cooking and service. The organic garden supplies the kitchen. It is the kind of place where you can do very little for several days and leave feeling restored.

Rooms, Suites and Villas to Book

The resort offers three types of stay: rooms, suites and villas. For most honeymooners, a suite with a sea view is the sweet spot. The extra space and terrace make long mornings easy. A view of the bay through the pines is the scene you came for.

The villas are the big splurge. Villa Litica, Villa Borovina and Villa Uvala give you privacy and your own outdoor space. Maslinica Maison N52 is another stand-alone option. They work well for a special occasion or for couples who want to cook a little and stay in.

When booking, ask about sea views and how close each unit is to the beach bar and family areas. In July and August, a room toward the quieter edge of the property makes a difference. Book early for summer, since the resort is small and fills quickly.

Food, Drink and Pharomatiq Wellness

The Restaurant is the main dining room. The cooking draws on the resort's organic garden and on Dalmatian ingredients such as island lamb, fresh fish and olive oil. The Bar is the place for an aperitif before dinner. A Bay Beach Bar sits by the water for lunch and drinks during the day.

Exclusive seaside dining can be arranged for a private dinner by the water, the obvious booking for an anniversary or proposal night. Ask the team to pair it with wines from Hvar's own vineyards, which produce Plavac reds and fresh whites.

Pharomatiq Wellness is the spa, with signature treatments, traditional massages and wellness packages. Stand-up paddleboarding and snorkeling in the bay are easy ways to fill an afternoon. An organic garden experience lets you see where your dinner comes from.

Things to Do

Walk or cycle into Stari Grad for coffee on the harbor and a look at the Tvrdalj, the fortified summer house of the Renaissance poet Petar Hektorović. Just behind the town, the UNESCO-listed Stari Grad Plain preserves farmland laid out by ancient Greek settlers, with dry-stone walls and olive groves still in use.

For wine, drive to Jelsa and Sveta Nedjelja for tastings at family cellars. In early summer, the lavender fields near Velo Grablje are worth a detour. Hvar Town is about 20 minutes away for a day of shopping, dinner and a sunset climb to the Fortica.

Book a private boat for a day in the Pakleni Islands, where you can swim in clear coves and stop for lunch at a konoba on Palmižana. Your hotel can help arrange it, along with transfers back.

Getting There

Fly into Split Airport (SPU). From Split harbor, car ferries sail to Stari Grad in about two hours. The ferry port is a few minutes' drive from the resort, which makes this the easiest route if you are renting a car.

Catamarans from Split are faster and run to Hvar Town. From there it is about a 20-minute drive to Maslina. Some of the resort's packages include car transfers from the Stari Grad and Hvar Town ports, so check what your rate includes.

A rental car is useful for exploring the island's villages, vineyards and south-coast beaches, though taxis and transfers can cover the basics. In July and August, book ferry spaces and catamaran seats ahead. Allow plenty of time on your departure day, since summer lines at Split harbor can be long.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want a calm, design-led stay with excellent food, yes. Maslina is one of the most refined hotels in Croatia and a very different Hvar from the one in the headlines. Expect roughly $650 a night and up for an entry room in high season, with suites and villas much higher. These figures are approximate and vary by date.

The trade-offs are distance and atmosphere. You will need a car or taxi for Hvar Town. Some families stay here in summer. The beach is a rocky bay rather than a sandy strand. If nightlife and walkable bars matter to you, Palace Elisabeth or Hotel Adriana in Hvar Town will suit you better. If you want the calmest corner of the island in a hotel that takes food and wellness seriously, Maslina is hard to beat.
