Why Honeymoon in Ruka and Kuusamo
Ruka gives you the Arctic winter experience with ski resort convenience. You can ski in the morning, take a husky safari in the afternoon and sit in a sauna before dinner, all without long transfers.
It also serves couples with different interests. Downhill skiers have the full resort. Cross-country skiers have hundreds of kilometers of groomed trails. Partners who do not ski can snowshoe, ride snowmobiles, visit a reindeer farm or simply read by the fire in a log cabin.
Compared with destinations deeper in Finnish Lapland, Ruka is easier to reach from Helsinki on a short flight. In summer and autumn, Oulanka is one of the best hiking areas in Finland.
When to Go
February and March are the sweet spot for winter. Snow is deep, days are getting longer and the weather is less brutally cold than in January. This is prime time for skiing, huskies and snow-crowned trees, with aurora chances on clear nights.
December and January are very dark and cold, often well below 0°F on the coldest days. They have their own magic, especially around Christmas, but daylight lasts only a few hours.
In spring, April offers bright, sunny skiing. Summer, roughly June to August, is for hiking, canoeing and rafting under very long days, though mosquitoes can be intense in June and July.
September is a highlight: autumn colors in the forests, fewer insects and the return of dark skies for auroras.
Where to Stay
Most couples stay in Ruka village or close by. Staying in the village means you can ski to your door and walk to restaurants. Rentals range from apartments to modern chalets with saunas and fireplaces.
For a quieter feel, look at log cabins on the lake shores and in the forests around Ruka and Kuusamo. Many have their own sauna. Some lodges offer glass-roofed cabins or rooms for watching the sky from bed.
Kuusamo town, about 25 kilometers south, has hotels and more services but is less scenic. Expect roughly $150–$350 a night for a good cabin or hotel room in high winter season, approximate; prices drop in summer and autumn.
Romantic Things to Do
- Ski Ruka's slopes, including floodlit evening runs in the dark months.
- Take a husky safari through the forest, driving your own team or riding together in the sled.
- Snowshoe through Riisitunturi National Park to see trees covered in thick crowns of frozen snow.
- Hike the Little Bear's Ring, a loop of about 12 kilometers in Oulanka with rapids and hanging bridges, or tackle the full Karhunkierros trail of about 80 kilometers.
- Go white-water rafting or canoeing on the Kitkajoki and Oulankajoki rivers in summer.
- Take a guided aurora trip, or watch from a cabin with a dark view of the northern sky.
- Visit a reindeer farm and learn about life in the north.
Getting There and Around
From the US, fly to Helsinki (HEL), which has nonstop service from a few US cities. Then take a domestic flight of about an hour and a half to Kuusamo Airport (KAO). Flights are more frequent in the winter season. From the airport, Ruka is about 30 minutes by car or airport bus.
An alternative is the overnight train from Helsinki to Oulu, followed by a drive, though this takes longer.
Ruka village is walkable. Many activities include pickup from your lodging. A rental car gives freedom to reach national park trailheads and remote cabins. In winter, roads are snowy and icy, so drive slowly and watch for reindeer on the road.
Food and Drink
Food in Ruka is hearty northern fare. Expect sautéed reindeer with mashed potatoes and lingonberries, salmon soup, whitefish and smoked meats. Cloudberries, a golden berry from the bogs, appear in desserts and liqueurs.
Ruka's village has a range of restaurants, from casual ski bars to more refined dining with local game and fish. Many lodges also serve dinner.
Cabins usually have kitchens. If you cook, stock up at the supermarkets in Ruka or Kuusamo. Strong alcohol is sold at Alko state stores. Expect dinner for two with drinks to run around $90–$180 in a good restaurant, approximate.
Honeymoon Tips
Dress properly for winter. Thermal base layers, wool socks, insulated boots and mittens make the difference between misery and pleasure. Many safari companies provide outer winter suits and boots.
For auroras, clear skies matter most. Stay at least four nights to give yourselves several chances. Check cloud and aurora forecasts.
Book winter lodging and activities early, especially around Christmas, New Year and the February and March holiday weeks, when Finnish families arrive.
In summer, bring strong mosquito repellent and a head net for forest hikes.
On Oulanka trails, carry water, snacks and layers. Stick to marked paths and bridges.
