The short answer

Limassol is the Cyprus pick for couples who want polished beach hotels, the island's best restaurants and a little city energy. Go in May, June, late September or October, when the sea is warm and the heat is bearable; July and August are hot and full of families. Rooms range from apartments near the old town to the Four Seasons Limassol and Amara, so budgets vary widely. Kourion, the Commandaria wine villages and the Troodos are all within an hour. Try to catch a show at the clifftop Kourion theater.

Best for
  • Couples who rank food above wilderness
  • Resort days with nights out in town
  • Day-trippers keen on ruins and wine
Maybe skip it if
  • You want empty coves and wild nature
  • Gray-sand city beaches would disappoint you

Limassol is the most grown-up place on the Cyprus coast. It is a working city of a couple hundred thousand people, with a busy port, office towers along the seafront and a food and bar scene that runs well past midnight. That might not sound romantic at first. In practice it means good restaurants, polished beach resorts and evenings that feel lively without being rowdy.

The old town wraps around a stone castle where, the story goes, Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191. Next to it sits a modern marina lined with cafes. A long seaside promenade runs east past palm trees and sculptures. Behind the city, the land climbs into the foothills of the Troodos, where villages have made sweet Commandaria wine for centuries.

For honeymooners, Limassol makes the most sense as a base for couples who want comfort and good food first. The ancient city of Kourion, the wine villages and the mountains are all within an hour.

Why Honeymoon in Limassol

Limassol gives you resort living without being stuck in a resort. Many of the island's most refined hotels sit along the coast east of the center, so you can spend the day by a large pool and still be a short taxi ride from dinner in the old town.

The city is also central. Paphos is about 45 minutes west, Larnaca a similar distance east and the mountain villages an hour north. That makes it easy to combine beach days with day trips without moving hotels.

And there is real history close by. Kourion, an ancient city on a cliff west of town, has a Greco-Roman theater that faces straight out over the sea. Kolossi Castle, a square stone keep linked to the medieval Knights Hospitaller, sits among fields where sugar cane and vines once grew. Neither feels like a box-ticking stop.

When to Go

Limassol is one of the warmer spots in Cyprus, so timing matters. May and early June bring highs in the low to mid 80s°F with a sea that has warmed into the low 70s. Late September and October are even better for swimming, as the water sits in the upper 70s and the worst of the heat has passed.

July and August are hot, with highs often in the low 90s°F and humid nights. Resorts are full of European families. If those are your only dates, choose a hotel with plenty of shade and plan a night or two in the cooler mountains.

The Limassol Wine Festival is held in the municipal gardens in late summer, with tastings and folk dancing. In winter the city is mild and green. Akrotiri Salt Lake often fills with flamingos between roughly November and March.

Where to Stay

The stretch of coast east of the center, from the tourist area toward Amathus, holds most of the big beach hotels. The Four Seasons Limassol and Amara are two of the most polished options, both right on the water with the city a short ride away. Farther east, the Parklane, a Luxury Collection resort, has a large beach and spa.

If you would rather walk to dinner, look at smaller hotels and apartments near the old town and marina. You trade a big beach for evenings on foot among cafes and wine bars.

For something quieter, Pissouri, about 30 minutes west, sits on a crescent bay between white cliffs. The Columbia Beach Resort there is a calm, well-run base close to Kourion. Couples who want to split their stay often pair two or three nights in Limassol with a stay up in the Troodos.

Romantic Things to Do

See a performance at the Kourion theater if your dates line up. Summer evening concerts and plays are held there with the sea behind the stage. If not, visit late in the afternoon and walk out to the House of Eustolios mosaics before closing.

Spend an evening in the old town. Start at the castle, wander the lanes around the old carob warehouses and end with a drink at the marina as the yachts light up.

Drive to the wine villages north of the city. Several, including Kalo Chorio and Zoopigi, make Commandaria, the sweet amber wine Cyprus has produced for centuries. Many wineries welcome visitors for tastings.

On a free morning, walk or rent bikes along the Molos promenade. In winter, head to the edge of Akrotiri Salt Lake at sunset to see flamingos feeding in pink lines across the water.

Getting There and Around

Limassol has no airport of its own. Larnaca is about 60 km away, roughly 45 minutes on the highway. Paphos is a little closer at about 50 km. Airport shuttle buses connect both with Limassol. Taxis are easy to book in advance. Since there are no nonstop flights from the US to Cyprus, choose whichever airport your connecting hub serves best.

Inside the city, taxis are plentiful and the seafront promenade is pleasant to walk. Local buses run along the coast road.

For Kourion, the wine villages and the mountains, a rental car is the simplest option. Traffic in Limassol itself can be heavy at rush hour, so plan day trips to leave mid-morning. Driving is on the left, as everywhere in Cyprus.

Food and Drink

Limassol is the best place on the island to eat beyond the classic taverna. You will find modern Cypriot cooking, serious seafood, sushi and wine bars with long lists of local bottles in the old town and around the marina.

Do not skip tradition, though. Look for a fish meze, where small plates of calamari, octopus, whitebait and the catch of the day arrive one after another. Meat meze in the villages above town is just as good, with souvla turning slowly over charcoal.

The local signature is Commandaria, served with dessert or on its own. Also try whites made from Xynisteri, which go well with grilled fish. For a casual lunch, grab a souvlaki wrapped in pita with tomato, onion and parsley. It is the snack every Cypriot seems to have strong opinions about.

Honeymoon Tips

Book a dinner reservation for your first night before you land. Popular old town and marina spots fill up on weekends, when locals come out too.

If you want a quieter beach day, skip the crowded city beaches and drive to Kourion beach or Lady's Mile on the Akrotiri peninsula, where there is more space and simple fish tavernas.

The Carnival in late winter brings costumed parades and parties to the city for about ten days. It is fun but packed, so book early if your dates overlap.

Plan at least one day in the Troodos. Even an afternoon in Omodos, about 40 minutes uphill, gives you cooler air, stone lanes and a village glass of wine, which balances the polish of the coast.

FAQ

Limassol honeymoon FAQ

Is Limassol good for a honeymoon?

It suits couples who like a bit of city energy with their beach time. The hotels are some of the best in Cyprus, the restaurant scene is the island's strongest and day trips are easy. If you want wild nature and empty coves, Paphos and the Akamas are a better primary base.

Which airport is closest to Limassol?

Larnaca and Paphos are both roughly 45 to 50 minutes away by car. Larnaca has more flights and is usually the easier connection from US gateways via Europe. Shuttle buses run from both airports to Limassol. Taxis can be booked ahead for a door to door transfer.

What is Commandaria?

Commandaria is a sweet dessert wine made from sun-dried grapes in a protected zone of villages on the southern slopes of the Troodos, just north of Limassol. It is amber, rich and raisiny. The name traces back to the medieval Knights who held land around Kolossi. Many wineries in the area offer tastings.

Are the beaches in Limassol nice?

City beaches are fine for a dip but tend to be gray sand and busy. The resorts east of the center have well-kept private stretches. For something more scenic, drive to Kourion beach below the ancient site or Pissouri's bay to the west. Lady's Mile is long and relaxed, though less pretty.

How many nights should we spend in Limassol?

Three or four nights works for most couples. That gives you a resort day, an evening in the old town, a trip to Kourion and Kolossi and a wine village afternoon. Pair it with a few nights in Paphos or the Troodos for a fuller picture of the island.
