The short answer

The Troodos Mountains are the quiet half of a Cyprus honeymoon: two or three nights of pine forest, stone villages and local wine, about 90 minutes from Paphos or Larnaca. Spring is prettiest, with blossom and mild days from April to early June; in summer the villages stay far cooler than the coast. It suits couples who like small restored guesthouses, easy hikes and Byzantine history. You'll need a car for the winding roads. Don't miss the frescoes inside Asinou, one of the UNESCO painted churches.

Best for
  • Couples adding variety to a beach week
  • History lovers drawn to Byzantine art
  • Couples who like village wine and walks
Maybe skip it if
  • You'd rather not drive mountain roads
  • You want nightlife or a full-service resort

The Troodos Mountains are the part of Cyprus most visitors skip, which is exactly why they work for a honeymoon. The range fills the middle of the island, topped by Mount Olympus at about 6,400 feet. Pine and cedar forests cover the slopes. Stone villages with red tile roofs step down terraced hillsides planted with vines, cherries and apples.

This is where Cypriots come to escape the summer heat. It can be 15 to 20°F cooler than the coast on an August afternoon. It is also where the island keeps some of its oldest treasures. Ten churches and monasteries here, many of them plain barn-like buildings from the outside, are covered inside with Byzantine frescoes and together form a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A couple of nights in the mountains changes the feel of a Cyprus trip. Swap the sunbed for a forest trail, a crowded promenade for a village square and a resort buffet for a slow meal of grilled meats and local wine beside a fireplace.

Why Honeymoon in the Troodos

Romance in the Troodos comes from quiet. Evenings in a mountain village are calm. The air smells of pine and woodsmoke. Many of the best places to stay are small restored stone houses with a handful of rooms, the kind of place where the owner tells you which taverna to try.

The mountains also carry the island's deepest history. The painted churches were decorated between roughly the 11th and 16th centuries. Stepping into one is like walking into an illustrated Bible. Kykkos Monastery, high in the western forest, is the richest and most famous monastery on the island.

Geologists have their own reason to love the place. The range is an ophiolite, a slab of ancient ocean floor pushed up by colliding plates. Studying it helped shape the theory of seafloor spreading. You do not need to care about rocks to enjoy it, but it explains the strange colors in the road cuts.

When to Go

Spring, from April through early June, is the prettiest season. Cherry and almond trees bloom, wildflowers cover the slopes and days are mild, often in the 60s and 70s°F in the higher villages.

Summer is the Troodos's big draw for Cypriots. While the coast sits in the 90s°F, the mountain villages are comfortable. Nights can call for a sweater. Weekends in July and August are busy with day-trippers, so plan your church visits for weekdays.

September and October bring the grape harvest and village wine festivals in some years, along with clear, golden light for hiking.

Winter is cold, wet and quiet. Highs in the higher villages hover in the 40s°F. The top of Mount Olympus usually gets snow in the first months of the year, enough for a small ski area in good seasons. Some guesthouses and tavernas close or keep short hours, so check before you go.

Where to Stay

Base yourselves in a village rather than a highway hotel. Each one has its own character.

Platres is the classic hill resort, with older hotels, easy access to Caledonia Falls and a short drive to Mount Olympus. The Forest Park Hotel there has hosted visitors since the days of British rule.

Kakopetria, on the northern side, has a beautifully kept old quarter of timbered houses above a stream. The Linos Inn, a cluster of restored village houses, is a romantic choice in the middle of it.

Kalopanayiotis, in the Marathasa Valley, is home to Casale Panayiotis, a boutique hotel spread through restored homes with a spa, near the Agios Ioannis Lampadistis monastery.

Omodos, on the southern wine slopes, is the easiest to reach from Limassol and has plenty of small guesthouses around its large cobbled square.

Romantic Things to Do

Walk the Caledonia trail near Platres, a shaded path that crosses a stream several times before reaching one of the tallest waterfalls on the island. It takes about an hour each way at an easy pace.

Spend a day on the painted churches. Asinou, with some of the oldest frescoes in the group, pairs well with Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis near Kakopetria. Panagia tou Araka at Lagoudera is another favorite. Hours vary and some keep the key with a caretaker in the village.

Drive up to Kykkos Monastery. The road through the forest is part of the appeal. The gold-heavy interior is a contrast to the simpler churches.

End an afternoon in Omodos with a glass of local wine on the square. On another day, walk the Artemis trail around Mount Olympus in the late afternoon for long views toward the coast.

Getting There and Around

There is no airport in the mountains. Most couples fly into Paphos or Larnaca and drive up, which takes roughly 90 minutes to the main villages. From Limassol, Platres and Omodos are under an hour away. Kakopetria is closer to Nicosia, about an hour's drive.

You really need a car. Buses do run to some villages, but service is sparse and hard to fit into a holiday. Mountain roads are paved and well maintained but winding, with tight bends and the occasional goat. Allow more time than the map suggests and drive on the left.

The Troodos villages are spread across several valleys, so it helps to pick a base on the side you most want to explore: Platres or Omodos in the south, Kakopetria in the north or Kalopanayiotis in the west.

Food and Drink

Mountain food is hearty and seasonal. Expect grilled trout from local farms, slow-cooked lamb, village sausages and halloumi made nearby. In autumn look for dishes made with fresh mushrooms foraged in the forest.

The Troodos is also the island's sweet tooth. Soutzoukos, strings of almonds dipped repeatedly in thickened grape must, hang in shop doorways in many villages. Palouzes, a grape must pudding, appears around harvest time.

Wine is everywhere on the southern slopes. Villages such as Omodos, Vasa and Kilani have small wineries that pour native varieties like Xynisteri, Maratheftiko and Mavro. Many will happily host a tasting for two, but call ahead in quiet months. After dinner, a glass of zivania, the local grape spirit, is the traditional way to warm up on a chilly night.

Honeymoon Tips

Dress for church visits. Shoulders and knees should be covered. Photos inside the painted churches are often forbidden. Bring a light scarf.

Pack layers even in summer. Evenings can be cool. The top of Mount Olympus can feel windy and chilly when the coast is sweltering.

Two nights is the minimum to feel the mountains properly. One night mostly means driving.

The main summit area is topped by British military radar domes, so do not expect a wild peak at the very top. The best views come from the trails just below it.

Carry some cash. Village tavernas, wineries and church donation boxes do not always take cards. Fill up with gas before heading up, since stations are scarce once you leave the main roads.

FAQ

Troodos Mountains honeymoon FAQ

Is the Troodos worth visiting on a Cyprus honeymoon?

Yes, especially if your trip is a week or longer. The mountains give you a complete change of scene from the coast, with forests, stone villages, frescoed churches and wine. Two or three nights adds real variety. In summer the cooler air is a welcome break from the beach heat.

How long does it take to drive to the Troodos?

From Limassol, Platres and Omodos are less than an hour by car. From Paphos or Larnaca airports, allow around an hour and a half to the main villages. Kakopetria on the northern side is about an hour from Nicosia. Roads are winding near the top, so plan on slow driving.

Can you ski in Cyprus?

Yes, in a good winter. Mount Olympus usually has snow during the first months of the year. A small ski area operates on the upper slopes when conditions allow. It is fun as a novelty, since you can ski in the morning and walk on the coast in the afternoon, but it is not a serious ski destination.

What are the painted churches of Troodos?

They are a group of ten Byzantine churches and monasteries in the Troodos region listed together by UNESCO since 1985. Their interiors are covered with frescoes painted between about the 11th and 16th centuries. Asinou, Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis and Panagia tou Araka are among the most visited. Opening hours vary widely.

Which Troodos village is best for couples?

Kakopetria has the most atmospheric old quarter and works well for exploring the painted churches. Platres is convenient for hiking and Mount Olympus. Omodos is easiest from Limassol and best for wine. Kalopanayiotis is the quietest, with a fine boutique hotel. Pick based on what you most want to do.
