The short answer

Pick the Seychelles if your honeymoon is about beaches and seclusion: granite boulders, clear water, island hopping and villa resorts or a private island, with a budget to match. Pick Sri Lanka if you want variety and value: rock fortresses, a tea country train, safaris and a coastal finish, for a fraction of the nightly cost. Couples who want both culture and a top beach often choose Sri Lanka plus a short island add-on.

These two Indian Ocean honeymoons sit at opposite ends of the planning spectrum. The Seychelles is about 115 islands off East Africa. Its inner islands are made of ancient granite, which gives its beaches their famous boulders, backed by jungle peaks. Couples hop between Mahé, Praslin and La Digue and often finish on a private island where one resort shares the land with nesting turtles.

Sri Lanka is a single large island south of India, packed with history, wildlife and landscapes. A typical honeymoon is a loop by car and train: the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the tea hills around Ella and a beach stay on the south coast. Two monsoons hit opposite coasts, so some part of it is usually dry.

The Seychelles is one of the strongest beach honeymoons anywhere and is priced like it. Sri Lanka is a richer journey with very good beaches but asks more of you on the road. Here is how they compare.

Beaches Versus Everything Else

The Seychelles is built around the shoreline. Anse Source d'Argent on La Digue and Anse Lazio on Praslin appear on almost every list of the world's best beaches, framed by pink and gray granite with jungle-covered peaks behind. Water is warm all year and often clear enough to snorkel with turtles from shore.

Sri Lanka's beaches are good rather than legendary. Galle's Dutch-era fort town, the surf at Weligama, whale watching from Mirissa and quieter coves toward Tangalle make the south coast a lovely place to finish. The east coast around Trincomalee shines in summer. But the island's real strengths lie inland: Sigiriya's rock citadel, Dambulla's cave temples, the ruined royal city of Polonnaruwa, tea estates and national parks.

If you would happily spend most of ten days near the sea, the Seychelles is the purer choice. If you want a beach to be the final chapter of a bigger story, Sri Lanka fits better.

Villas, Islands and Plantation Bungalows

The Seychelles specializes in intimate, high-end resorts. On Mahé, Four Seasons Resort Seychelles has villas on a hillside above the bay. Raffles Seychelles on Praslin is an all-villa resort with private plunge pools. Hilton Seychelles Labriz on Silhouette Island offers a quieter island stay at a lower rate. Then come the private islands: Denis Private Island, Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island, North Island and Six Senses Zil Pasyon, where seclusion is the point.

Sri Lanka's stays change with the scenery. Water Garden Sigiriya has villas near the rock. The Kandy House is a historic manor outside Kandy. 98 Acres Resort & Spa sits among the tea estates at Ella. Amangalla occupies a colonial building inside Galle Fort, while Cape Weligama sits on a clifftop above the south coast.

The Seychelles offers more seclusion. Sri Lanka offers more character and variety for the money.

Weather Through the Year

The Seychelles is warm all year, usually in the 80s Fahrenheit. It also sits outside the main cyclone belt. Its seasons follow the trade winds. From roughly May to September the southeast trades bring drier, breezier weather and choppier seas on southeast-facing coasts. From December to March the northwest monsoon brings hotter, more humid days and heavier showers. April to May and October to November, the transition months, bring the calmest seas.

Sri Lanka's two monsoons split the island. The south, the west and the hill country are best from December to April. The east coast is best from May to September. October and November can be unsettled almost everywhere.

So the overlap is good. In April, both are at or near their best. In December to March, Sri Lanka's classic loop is in peak season while the Seychelles is hotter and wetter but still warm. From June to September, the Seychelles is breezy and Sri Lanka's east coast takes over.

Budget Reality

This is the biggest gap. The Seychelles is a premium destination. Luxury resorts on Praslin and Mahé often range from several hundred to well over a thousand dollars a night. Private islands start well into four figures. In our listings, rates run from about $500 at Hilton Seychelles Labriz to around $1,800 at Four Seasons Desroches. Helicopter transfers and resort dining add more.

Sri Lanka is much gentler. Midrange boutique hotels run very roughly $80 to $200 a night. Luxury plantation bungalows and design hotels often run $350 to $900 or more, frequently with meals. Our listings run from about $300 at The Kandy House to around $850 at Amangalla. A car and driver is commonly $60 to $100 a day. A rice and curry lunch costs a few dollars.

All figures are approximate. As a rough guide, a week of Seychelles luxury can cost what two weeks of Sri Lanka luxury does.

Days Together

Seychelles days are simple and outdoorsy. Cycle La Digue's car-light roads to Anse Source d'Argent. Walk through the Vallée de Mai on Praslin, a UNESCO-listed forest where the coco de mer palm grows. Visit giant tortoises on Curieuse Island, snorkel off the boulders and finish with Creole fish curry at a beach shack. On a private island, the days narrow to swims, spa time and sunset drinks.

Sri Lanka's days are fuller. Climb Sigiriya at sunrise or climb Pidurangala for the view of it. Visit the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. Ride the train from Kandy into tea country and hike Little Adam's Peak at dawn near Ella. Take a jeep safari in Yala for leopards or Udawalawe for elephants. Then walk Galle Fort's ramparts at sunset.

Couples with different energy levels can find a balance in either, but Sri Lanka keeps the more curious partner busier.

Getting There and Getting Around

Neither has nonstop flights from the US. For the Seychelles, most couples connect through Dubai, Doha or Addis Ababa to Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) on Mahé, with total travel of 20 hours or more from the East Coast. For Sri Lanka, connections through Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul or Singapore into Colombo (CMB) take roughly 20 to 26 hours. Gulf hub schedules have been disrupted by regional conflict, so confirm routings and allow generous connections.

Inside the Seychelles, ferries link Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. Short flights or helicopters reach the private islands. Island transfers often depend on daylight.

Inside Sri Lanka, there are no domestic flights to worry about. A driver handles the slow roads at around 20 to 25 mph inland. The train covers the most scenic stretch. Plan for more time on the road than the map suggests.

Safety, Etiquette and Combining

The State Department rates Sri Lanka Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, citing civil unrest and terrorism. Avoid protests, mainly in Colombo. Hire a reputable driver. The Seychelles is generally calm. Its main everyday risk is the sea: from about May to September, southeast-facing beaches such as Grand Anse on La Digue and Anse Intendance on Mahé can have rough surf and strong currents.

Both ask for modest dress away from the beach. In Sri Lanka, cover shoulders and knees at temples, never pose with your back to a Buddha statue and cover any Buddha tattoos. In the Seychelles, topless sunbathing is generally not acceptable on public beaches.

Combining the two takes planning. Both connect through Gulf hubs, so you can route through Doha or Dubai between them. Many couples find Sri Lanka plus a few nights in the Maldives, about 90 minutes from Colombo, the easier pairing.

FAQ

Seychelles vs Sri Lanka: your questions

Which has better beaches, the Seychelles or Sri Lanka?

The Seychelles. Its granite-framed beaches, such as Anse Source d'Argent and Anse Lazio, are among the most celebrated anywhere. Sri Lanka has lovely stretches on the south and east coasts, plus whale watching and surf, but its main strengths are culture, wildlife and the hill country.

Is the Seychelles much more expensive than Sri Lanka?

Yes. Seychelles luxury resorts often run several hundred to well over a thousand dollars a night, with private islands higher. Sri Lanka's luxury stays often run $350 to $900, many with meals included. Midrange boutique hotels cost far less. Daily extras like drivers and meals are also cheaper in Sri Lanka.

How long should a honeymoon in each be?

Plan at least eight to ten nights in the Seychelles, split between two or three islands. Sri Lanka's classic loop takes about ten days. Fourteen lets you add a safari and more beach time. The long flights from the US make shorter trips hard to justify in either.

When do both have good weather?

April is a strong month for both: the Seychelles has calm transition seas and Sri Lanka's south coast and hill country are still in season. December to March suits Sri Lanka's classic route. For the Seychelles, October and November are the other calm window.

Which is better for couples who do not love long drives?

The Seychelles. Distances are short, ferries and boats link the main islands and many couples stay put on one or two. Sri Lanka involves real road time, often averaging 20 to 25 mph inland, though a good driver, the scenic train and fewer stops make it easier.
